in Anti-immigrant groups back vehicle impound ballot initiative on The Colorado Independent
As a staunch libertarian, I heartily oppose this initiative.
It is obnoxious and will change nothing except annoy innocent people.

What an idiot.
Decades?
As if we could not learn from and copy some ideas from Canada, Australia and the UK.

in Shocked — but not totally — over young Schaffer’s racist Facebook page on The Colorado Independent
The 3 images shown to illustrate this article are NOT RACIST.
Insensitive, maybe, but not racist.
In particular, the slavery refers to Egyptians enslaving Egyptians.

in The Colorado Independent » Newspapers stocks plummeting as the vultures keep circling on The Colorado Independent
@commprof: "how will the decline and fall of the local newspaper affect local communities?"

In my local community, the local monthly rags appear to be doing quite well. The Wash Park Profile and the Glendale Cherry Creek Chronicle are fatter than ever. Display ads are sprouting like mushrooms in both papers.

Benito,

You can not have a "plutonium pit" as PIT is an acronym for Plutonium Implosion Trigger. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boosted_fission_we... for more details.

in Can outsourcing save Denver on The Colorado Independent
I was shocked when I read David's column. Shocked that the Rocky actually published it as it was spot on. Normally, you have to read Westword to find out about the dirt at the two major dailies.

Now, I think the column's publication was a warning shot across the bow of the unions at both papers.

As someone who gets three newspapers delivered every morning, I find this all so sad.

Weak.
No mention of "numbers" about Dinky Singleton's empire (rump state) in the article.

in Schaffer continues to trail Udall in most recent poll on The Colorado Independent
It is not really a 9-point lead, it is really a 21-point lead. And, MarianasBob is in deep trouble.
Why do I say 21 points?
1/3 of the voters are Repubs and Schaffer will get 100% of their votes.
1/3 of the voters are Dems and Udall will get 100% of their votes.
So, after the Rs and Ds vote, it is a tie.
1/3 of the voters are "unaffiliated" and are THE determining factor in this contest.
Bob is down 21 points with this, the only group of voters who matter.

in Cab Business Splurges Again On Taxi Proposal on The Colorado Independent
For some bizarre reason every city in the world (well, most) feels to the need to control the number of taxis.

They don't control the number of hairdressers, clothing stores, restaurants.

I have never understood the rationale  for this. It just drives prices up and service down.

This battle in Denver is between the established taxi companies and the (recent immigrants to Denver from Ethiopia, Eritrea) entrepreneurs. We should all root for the ones who wish to start their own businesses.

in CU Prof Seeks to Debunk Immigration Myths on The Colorado Independent
"a professor of ethnic studies" is the wrong person... to make the argument.

Of course, someone with that title is biased in one way or another.

The correct person to make the argument is "professor of economics".

Is legal immigration good or bad from an economic perspective?

Is illegal immigration good or bad from an economic perspective?

Nukes "the electrical power segment of the entire nation of France produces less carbon dioxide annually - about 45.8 million tons - than Colorado does."

and the answer is nukes. 80% of France's electrical power comes from nuclear (fission) power plants.

in Disappearing Ink And Gumshoe on The Colorado Independent
So sad. I subscribe to both Denver [large] dailies and view the axing of experienced people as just completely foolish.

I know it saves Scripps stockholders and Dinky SIngleton money, but why would you subscribe to a newspaper that has no local content? Don't answer, it was a rhetorical question.

I think that John T and Greg M wake up every day and ask themselves: how can we piss off our customers today?

It is always about subtraction and never about addition.

And, every day, another reader says: that is it; I am off to get my news online.

in The Real Diversity Crisis in Colorado Higher Education on The Colorado Independent
This bothers me "the real affirmative action crisis in the University of Colorado system: the shocking lack of students of color." really bothers me.

Why is this a crisis?

It is so easy to get accepted to CU. Anyone who gets a 25 or better on the ACT is automatically accepted. No nasty essay needs to be written. No long application form has to be filled out.

I mean, how difficult is it to get a 25? A 36 is difficult, a 25 is not.
