Casie, I wish I had a wonderful holiday moment for you, but I find that usually holidays are stressful and when your family is falling apart. If I could pick a special moment, I remember when I was about 11, I woke up at 5:30 am and couldnt sleep because I was so excited, and my grandfather joined me in the living room, starring at all the presents with me until everyone else woke up, however secretly he let me open a bunch of presents early.

man, so true. my boyfriend´s mom brought home bedroom slippers yesterday that she had bought for me, because i´ve walked around in socks like 2 times. and no exaggeration, i barely make it from the bathroom to my room and my boyfriend is right there, scolding me for having wet hair. i sit there thinking "ummm, i was about to go back to the bathroom to blow dry it, don´t freak out.¨

i saw a poster for Santiago en Cien Palabras today, and thought that might be a cool group blogging topic... describe Santiago, or whatever city you live in, in 100 words.

I second sobers! This Senator is a complete breath of fresh air in the stagnant pool of Washington rhetoric. How refreshing is it that he actually called foul on a wayward institution.

I can't wait to be back there :) And that's so funny that you mentioned Sarah, because I was just looking on Chile's craigslist a couple of days ago to see if there were any promising apartments on there, and I clicked on one that looked pretty cool, so I sent an email about it.. turns out it was Sarah's! :) Thanks for mentioning to her that you know me, that definitely helps! ahhhhh... Where to start? What a completely ridiculous notion, that just because these are their "customs", we should just stand back and accept them. NO. I will not. That's such a slippery slope argument, where does it stop? It's not "up to me" to ignore them, I have ZERO responsibility to do anything in this. What i DO have (or at least, SHOULD have) is the right to walk down the street without getting whistled at and having vulgar comments spewed at me. Look, I don't want to come off as a jerk, but I just find the idea that I should "just accept" these so-called customs ludicrous.

you can count me among those gringas with plans to move to Chile to be with their Chileno :) i definitely know it's not easy, but like you, i want to be there with every bone in my body, so... i'm going to make it work. anyway, i found your blog and have enjoyed reading it - keep up the good work Kyle!

Russ you are so right! Even knowing Ricky as well as I did, I never knew that he would have possibly been put in prison or institutionalized had someone found his stash.. And althought he did like to steal he also gave back an awful lot.. I recall one time while in New Orleans we were heading for brunch and had to pass by Lee Circle. While passing by Ricky obviously noticed about 50 homeless folks that had camped out for the night. When we passed Ricky says - turn around and head back to Wendy's, I am starving. Not quite sure what he was thinking, I turned around and went back. Ricky refused to go through the drive thru, he wanted to go in. After waiting FOREVER I assume that he using the bathroom instead of getting food but then he walks out with bags and bags of burgers in tow.. We make our way back to Lee Circle and Ricky makes his rounds handing out burgers to all. Even the ones sleeping were awakened by the smell of burgers that he left directly below their noses. So yes, Ricky was obviously a prankster but he never ceased to amaze me by his kind heartedness...

Speaking of moving... Does anybody have any idea why Ricky always seemed to end up living directly next to the railroad tracks? It was like his pre-requisite for him moving.
