Yeah, I think its cool to see something unique, especially if it was unexpected and didn't take up too much time.

Like him or hate him, agree or disagree with his views, his movies are entertaining (except for F9/11...)

A conservative bashing a movie before they've even seen a trailer for it? No, that would be too obvious.

in Review: Turn Off Your Brain and ‘Angels & Demons’ is Great on Film School Rejects
Cole,
My review was pretty similar to yours - if you can check your brain at the door, it's not a bad film. Of course this isn't the sort of film where you should have to check your brain - I usually save that for Jason Statham films. :)

That's EXACTLY what I think about all the "you don't get it" or "aren't ready for it" reviews/comments. Smear some dog crap on a canvas and this type will ooh and ahh about how cutting edge and avante garde it is - but these same folks will call a beautiful oil painting boring and cliche.

Well if that doesn't speak to the mentality of the type of person who liked this movie, nothing does.

LMAO... "minority opinion?" Did you see how much money this movie made this weekend? $11MM. Next weekend will probably be $4MM or less.
Yeah, Rob's in the minority all right.

Thanks for the non-spoilery review, Neil. Now I'm waiting to see what a hard core (yet reasonable) fan of Star Trek says about it.
I'm as big a Trekkie as you'll find, but I'm enraged by "non-canon" issues.

I'm with you exactly! I have been a fan since '66. The only thing that bothers me about this reboot, is will the sequels be in the prime or original Timeline?

Yeah, thanks for that - you hit on every one of the items I mentioned, right from the playbook. Well done.
Sexual repression, right. Have you BEEN outside your house? Turned on a TV, spent any time online?
Give me a freaking break.

Republican? Right? Did I nail it? Ever been out of the country? Nudity and sexuality isnt considered in the same vain as profanity, as it is in America. While there might be more sexuality in America compared to say 1950. But we're still the turtleneck of the free western nations.
Watch Bruno, I'm sure it'll come out. Loudly.

Mack41
haha sexual repression what a joke! ERoBB are you an American? Have you been to America? Are all of the 300 million Americans ignorant? Are only Americans ignorant? I find you ignorant for assuming that all Americans must be ignorant. And not wanting to watch two guys get it on is not sexual repression and unrest. Some people may find that uncomfortable to watch. That's fine. They don't have to watch it. Stop sounding like such a prick.

Hahahaha exactly how I feel
ERoBB
You think thats what this movie is about? Thats probably why you'd be called prejudiced. As with Borat, Cohen will be pointing out the repressed ignorance of most Americans. When he did it with Borat, it was through the guise of an immigrant, during a time of immigration issues.
Now he'll do it as a gay man, in a time of sexual repression and unrest. Theres a point behind it all, not just "two guys getting it on."

Again, I'm not relating the two to each other (but thanks for trying to make it look like I am, speaking of classic liberal tactics). I'm just trying to get across the visceral reaction.
And I'm sick of holier than thou people trying to tell me (and others) that our revulsion for watching gay sex is due to our "insecurities." What a bunch of bullshit.
So if people don't like to watch hard core S&M sex or coprophilia that means they're insecure? Yeah, brilliant.

Hey, how about YOU "get the fuck over it." Are you uncomfortable with the idea of watching a fat, hairy 50 year old have sex with a 5 year old? Then maybe you're being a fascist against pedophiles and you should be forced to watch that so you can get comfortable with it.
I don't want to see two guys making out or having sex and feeling that way doesn't make me uptight, weird or otherwise. It's a natural reaction. And based on the downvotes on your comment, I'm not alone.

if you don't want to watch something - just don't. Nobody is forcing you. People have a right to choose: what they want to eat, what they want to drink, what they want to watch. And there is a certain difference between homosexuality and pedobeary - you should study the subject before making stupid statements.

in Is the New Jim Carrey Comedy “Too Gay” For American Audiences? on /Film
That's exactly right, but some people here seem to be saying that if people DON'T want to watch it something is inherently wrong with them and they should "get over it," and go watch it.
As to the pedo comparison, I'm not making a "stupid statement." My only point was to try to get across the visceral reaction to that as a comparison.

Hey Cole, you forgot to mention one major item: This movie is NOT suitable for children. I know a lot of people out there think this is just another superhero flick even though it's rated R.
There's EXTREMELY graphic violence in the movie and a VERY explicit sex scene - and I'm sure there will be lots of little kiddies in the audience because their parents didn't know what this movie is like.

...actually, one of the arguments for not censoring a lot of rap and hip-hop is that that term *is* empowering/positive/has a changed meaning...
...as is the case with some words such as "fag." I don't know when it became popular to use and condone oppressive language and just call it "positive"

I remember that, and thinking it was not the smartest thing I'd ever heard.
On a side note, considering your point of view on the topic in general, the last word I'd expect you to use is the one you did in your comment!

Actually, a lot of feminists are currently in the process of trying to change the meaning of the word to be more positive and empowering.
And yes, within almost every genre of film, I think female characters are significantly less strong than male characters. When movies such as Juno come out, with a strong, original female character, everyone freaks out because it's so uncommon! And even some action movies with female leads (I'm thinking of Charlie's Angels, etc here), women are objectified and portrayed as being obsessed with the men in their lives.
It's a pervasive subject in our society. Which is really unfortunate.

Example: The Vagina Monologue wherein the actress more or less screams the word over and over (and the audience joins in).
