Nobody likes to be lectured or coerced. Best is to lead through personal example, and providing solutions to people's very real problems, as in public transportation for cash strapped drivers.

Nice summary, Anya! My observation, from spending over a year deeply immersed in new media, and watching various companies interactions, is that the human dimension of social media is often missed. Social means human interaction. Corporate types should do well to remember. Also, only folks who are themselves heavy users of social media, can capture all the nuances of communication in this new space. My advice to any client interested in adopting new media initiative: sign up for all the major Web 2.0 sites, and spend a month or two playing around, creating own profile and personal message. The learning will be invaluable later.

Please keep up your important work here on Canary Report. My problem is there is so much we need to know, and simply do not have the time to research. In the end, it comes down to having better laws and standards. That will only happen if citizens, and regulators are well informed.

This is why I am so excited about my friend HP Michelet's groundbreaking desal technology. His company Energy Recovery Inc, based in California, won the Environmental Exporter of the Year Award last year. They developed a technology that makes it 98% energy efficient to make drinkable water out of sea water.

I don't know if bicycle friendliness contributes to economic development, but if for sure makes for a happier city, which in my mind, is really all that matters. I have written several posts on the topic, inspired from my visit back home to Paris this summer. The Velib' initiative there has been tremendously successful. And a very fun way to get people to start thinking, and acting green.

There is a group of people who are hoping to benefit from climatic changes, no doubt. It is human nature to look out for our own self-interest. What your article alludes to however, is that nature has its own ways of telling us who is boss. It is only a matter of time, before even seemingly benefiting places start experiencing negative consequences, in some unforeseen twist.

'Pervenche', the bike I went to some great lengths to purchase a few months ago, has been sitting on my porch, because the weather has not been nice enough, meaning it has been drizzling and below 60 degrees - I am a California chicken -.
