You can use SSL and HTTP Authentication in today's news readers. Well, NetNewsWire, at least :-)

Acknowledgment is easy to bolt on if explicit user action is acceptable. If it isn't, then the feed generator would probably need to be dynamic. But, if the feed is personalized, it's probably dynamic anyway...
