In talking with my dad the other day. He mentioned that in tight times, big government contracts usually happen to stimulate the economy. This energy independence may be the thing we need. We need a historic project of some sort to bring hope back.
If you think about about it. Hoover Dam was build around the time of a depression and as Matthew said, the space program was built around the time of another depression.

Wow... I'm sold. Of course I will give each candidate equal opportunity to convince me, but I have been leaning towards Obama for a while.

I have heard others say similar things. Don't add music to a topical show unless it adds value to the show.

I would love a station ID. Show "Mike's Hotdish". Just make some um... cheesy reference to food in the ID if you can. Basic example is "...and you listening to a heaping plate full of Mike's Hotdish." I am sure you have a better idea.

This would push me over the edge to buy an iPod Touch. Being able to subscribe AND download new podcasts on the fly.

Do you have the option of DSL? The only downtime I have had is due to the modem. It either required a reset or it had to be replaced once. I can count on one hand in the past 5 years how many times I had to touch it.

I just started trying out Amazon S3 with Jungle Disk. At $0.15/ gig of space used, I can afford to pay 3 to 4 bucks a month to store my whole music and photo collection and all my other important documents.

Podcasting has changed my outlook on musicians and their music. I used to have the "screw the big man" mentality. But now looking at these great artists working hard to live, I have a new outlook. I buy the music when I can and if I can't afford it, I add it to my wish list and buy when I can.
I think PodShow needs to finish up the PMN. When I read their license at one time I believe if you are non-commercial you can use the music for free. Thus one would assume a fee would have to be paid if you are commercial. The question is what is commercial and how do you pay those fees? I am sure there is a handful of podcasters out there that qualify as commercial, but I am also sure many of them are buying music and CDs from the artists as well. I don't mean to just pick on PodShow for this, I believe most of the "Podsafe Music Networks" have similar licensing. They should finish defining these rules and systems and get them in place.
As a podcaster, I can't afford and would have to quit podcasting if they charged everyone a fee to use the music. However, if I was turning a profit, I would have no problem paying for playing. But I don't think podcasters are the problem. We are a handful to the thousands of listeners and consumers of the music.
I realize what Matt's concern is and the many others that have gotten to where they are today because of podcasting. I think what one person suggested about the PSA would help, but we are talking about a small percentage of the whole listening audience would listen or care.
What is the solution? Personally, I don't think there is a silver bullet. Americans are cheap and lazy. They will go cheap if it is easy. File sharing is pretty easy these days. If you make file sharing difficult (like in the pre-Napster days) consumers will buy the music. Since that isn't going to happen, we need to figure out a better solution.

in Here is what is wrong with Podshow (and maybe how to fix it) on Christopher S. Penn's Awaken Your Superhero
On the PMN... I have been using the IODA Promonet for a couple weeks now (seriously using it). First lets talk about IODA. I see two problems (or rather annoyances) with their system.
1. You can't just add it to a list to be downloaded later.
2. Some of the genres aren't very specific.
I can see the PMN being the leader, but they aren't right now. What I would like to see is the ability for an artist to tag their music. So if it is "Hard Rock, Hip Hop/Rap, Christian" they can tag it as such. There is only a hundred genres on the PMN, can we cut that down to major classifications then use tags beyond that? Then on the producer side, give us the ability to group songs and automatically create the required links for us (like IODA does). Also, I would like to monitor my favorite artists to see if they released new music and monitor my favorite genres.
These are just a few of the things I can see for the PMN.

I took the survey and was quite harsh. Not because it is Podshow, but because I personally don't like some of the things they do with the pre-rolls and their website is just too clunky to me. As soon as I hear the "Another Podshow..." I immediately reach for the fast forward button.
Podshow does need to change, I don't mind the post-roll or even a couple second pre-roll (listen to my show for a good example (http://mikeshotdish.com). But when I know I have to skip 15 - 60 seconds that gets really ridiculous.
