in Bike Commute: I made it… one way! on kevindevin.com
I'd ride my bike to work too, but my wife would throw a fit if I dragged that mountain bike in the house to ride down the stairs. :)

Oh the joys of telecommuting...

Kevin,

KevinDevin.com was always easy to remember, but never fitting for InTheTrenches anyway.

No resistance from here. It's YOUR domain. Your ITT listeners (ok-former listeners) will likely put up little if any resistance. Besides, deep down, you'll always be one of us anyway.

just an added note... isn't Quicksilver just for OSX Tiger (10.4) and not updated for Leopard?

I was just curious if you've successfully ran through this on Leopard or haven't upgraded from Tiger yet.

in Change your Default Terminal Color Scheme in Leopard on Macgasm
Interesting, but I have two words for you:

I TERM

iTerm is a much nicer, more configurable (and free) terminal emulation application available at Sourceforge. It doesn't come pre-loaded with different schemes, but is very flexible and allows you to customize 'til your heart's content.

I grew up on Long Island and worked in Manhattan for quite some time using Verizon. It the same as anywhere else. There are good spots and there are dead spots. Just because it's a big metropolis you'd think that the cell providers could provide some decent coverage to a highly dense location. Truth is they can't. Real Estate is costly and there's lots of competition for signal.

Being out in the west coast I live in a valley... its even worse here. Limited cell towers can't cover the landscape when there are hills in the way.

Truth be told each cell provider has their strengths and weeknesses in different areas. "Least dropped calls" is relatvie. It just means they "suck less" than some of the other providers. But "More bars?". I agree, that's a joke.

But kudos to Apple. I won't give up my iPhone regardless.

maybe I'm looking at this from a different angle BUT...

Twitter is an appetizer. Facebook is a full dinner.
Twitter is great for those quick "shout outs", but lets face it, how much contact can you really have when you have Twitter numbers like @scobleizer, @jasoncalacanis & @leolaporte? It becomes a blur after a while with no way to process the information.

I don't think we're comparing like technologies here. Similar? Yes. But its not a "one or the other" situation.

Would you replace your TV with your iPhone? No you wouldn't. Yes you can watch video content on your iPhone, but its a different experience? Make sense?

Twitter is great to have an app sitting at the corner of your desktop to keep a finger on the pulse of what's happening now. Then you pick it up and take it with you on your mobile device. Facebook is more of your landing pad. A "more professional" homebase possibly?

Talk about the rock stars of web 2.0

What a great "inside baseball" discussion. Absolutely great stuff.

One oversite, Kevin "the dark hacker" Rose had launched Digg.com before he left The Screen Savers (or was it "Attack of the Show" at that point?). He had promoted it as a "feature site" by a "friend of his". He leveraged his position as host of the show (which he took over after Leo & Patrick left) to help build the digg community. Great move by him and of course a great site.

in Love It Or Hate It? - TWiT 134 on LOL: Life of Leo
Personally I don't feel an apology is necessary.

Leo provides a number off quality shows that range in topics and participants. I'm thankful to have shows as it more than filled the void I felt when "The Screen Savers" went off the air. Not only has Podcasting filled that role, but its great to have Leo & Co. on TWiT, Macbreak Weekly, Windows Weekly, et al.

I never realized that "The Woz" episode was so hated. I was quite entertained by him actually.

in Net News Wire now FREE on Typical Mac User Podcast Forum
Great news. I had used the free version before and abandoned it. Will have to give the full version a try and see if there are more features to keep me going back to it (instead of relying on a home page set to Netvibes to capture the RSS feeds)

Hey I keep my spare key on my keychain with the rest of my keys. This way I know I always have it with me. :)

The bright side (if there is one) is that this will now become a lesson to be used over and over. He certainly won't forget it and will likely spread the word of his "unfortunate situation" (at least as much as his pride will allow him to) and you can continue to preach good IT habits (even if you're role has changed) with a "real life" example.

in Happy Trails - ITT into the Sunset of new Paths on kevindevin.com
Amen to that Andy. ITT was one of my first and favorite podcasts. Hearing that opening intro music always brought a smile to my face as I knew what I was in store for... the ramblings and teachings of comrades in tech. Fellow geeks (and I mean that affectionately of course) who shared different yet similar experiences as the rest of us... in the trenches. The show name couldn't have been more fitting.

Kevin & George - Thank you guys. I'm sure (and hope) this won't be the last we hear from you. Have a great holiday season and fantastic new year!!

I doubt this will have any effect what-so-ever.... everyone knew the ship was going to sink in Titanic, yet people still flocked to the theaters to see it.

The story is only part of the experience.

in Leo’s Twitter Updates for 2007-11-12 on LOL: Life of Leo
How about instead of posting the Twitter feeds to a blog post, add Twitter Tools to the wordpress blog and each time you Tweet, the module/plug-in will be updated.

This will keep it from aggregating with the rss feeds and still give people the ability to follow you without being overwhelmed.

Just an idea.

in Gary Vaynerchuk - My 120 on Joe Torre leaving the New York Yankees ... on Gary Vaynerchuk
You forgot the point about Torre taking the team to win the World Series in 3 out of the first 4 years after inheriting the team from Buck Showalter and "Stick" Michael.

That being said, Torre still has to get some credit for driving the bus. There are few ... VERY FEW ... managers out there... if any... who could year in and year out take the rectal abuse that the Boss dishes out while keeping an even keel, keeping the Yankee ship running smooth and keeping the player focussed on the media circus that is the New York Yankees. That's not an easy task. Making the playoffs for 12 straight years isn't something to just laugh at just because of the Yankee payroll.

7 Years without a World Series win isn't a knock either (remember its only been 4 years since a WS appearance) especially in a playoff system on steroids (no offense Mr. Bonds). There are 3 rounds of playoffs now. That's a LONG Post Season that follows a very long regular season (which follows spring training). Before Joe? The Yankees finally sniffed the playoffs in '95 (Mattingly's final season) and hadn't been anywhere near it since 1981 when Richard Todd was the QB for the Jets. Sad huh?

I'm glad I came to the site rather than just viewing on my iPhone (it didn't move at all on the iPhone). However I too started seeing it spinning clockwise... then, as I started to scroll down the page it changed and turned counter clockwise....

@Michael - agreed about Twitter. Twitter took on a whole new life for me once I got my iPhone. Plus between Twitter's Mobile versions, its variants (Hahlo, Pockettweets, Thincloud, etc) and Twitterific on the desktop (for OSX) there are alot of options to sending 'Tweets. I rarely, if ever go to twitter.com.

Hey Mark, if you don't mind... can I get one of those invites too? Thanks much

someone already stole my thunder but in case anyone missed it, you CAN upload to flickr with an unlocked iPhone without having to import to iPhoto.

Once you've taken your picture on the iPhone just email it to a special flockr email account which ypu can easily setup from within your flickr settings.

in TWiT Update on LOL: Life of Leo
My .02:

There's certainly different aspects of this to consider. 1) Entertainment shows run in seasons. The News doesn't. The TWIT-casts sort of fall into a hybrid category of reporting the news, yet being entertaining.
2) TWIT itself is a bit of a rotating cast with Leo being the steady host. As mentioned before, couldn't someone else play the role of host/editor? Patrick for TWIT or Scott for MBW or anyone of the other regulars would seemingly fill in nicely. We fans of all.

I believe it was Ronald McDonald who said it best, "You deserve a break today" (ok, maybe not).

Nicely done Leo!
Out of curiousity, what other Wordpress plugins do you use? I thought you had mentioned on Macbreak Weekly that you were going to list them (or was that just the voices in my head again?).

Thanks.
