in Lost Remote: The Business of Journalism on lostremote
Many people are asking what role government should have in saving journalism. Journalism and journalist who should be reporting on government should be running for any such suggestion. The right answer: Government has zero role in journalism, whether saving it or just feeding the monopolist biz model that used to support it.

In other words, "run away, run away, run away!" My apologies to Monty Python and those who love them.

Robert, I know you like to take part in events and lines, but for the rest of us showing up to the polls on November 2 when the election will be held on November 4 is not a good use of our time.

Make sure you call people to action on the right day. November 4th everyone.

Since you asked for URLs where TC50 coverage will be found, I'll offer this link.

http://tc50.mobilejones.com

Some video and a multimedia collection of those organizing and attending TC50 are posted as they come in from Twitter, Qik and Flickr. If anyone wants to add their Twitter, Flickr or Qik feed just send me your URL and name to mojo _AT_ mobilejones dot_com but with the correct formatting of course. I'll be glad to add you.

TechCrunch 40 was a great event last year and I'm looking forward to TC50 with anticipation of an informative, fun and entertaining conference. Say hi if you're coming.

Robert,

Just read your post and it's no longer your birthday. It's now the 19th and my birthday. :-) January has been a very good month for producing people.

I hope you enjoyed your day. Happy BD!

Has George W.'s claim that he doesn't read newspapers now infected the whole of the right wing blogosphere?

CNN announced the Republican YouTube debate already scheduled for September when the Dem one was annoucned. This has always been the plan people. Just breath and read.

in Reading the Long Tail with the Head Tail on Scobleizer
The idea of doing Turnhere.com style videos is interesting, and it would be nice to see more "off the beaten path" locations which would be so long tailish. Perhaps small town governments or chambers would foot the bill as a tourism out reach. Anyway, the Turnhere commericals could be expanded out to all the amazing historical and culturally significant locations that exist in the same locales. While it's trivial to find information about Paris, it's for more challenging to find information about Ocean Beach, CA. or current information about New Orleans.

in Peter says podcasting is inefficient on Scobleizer
The observation of TV, radio, and newspapers is mostly on target. Yes, those are today's models and analogies for new media, BUT.... What makes vlogging, pocasting and blogs stand out from the parent medium is timeshifting, placeshifting, and nicheiness.

Teevee and radio especially as broadcasting makes time (when broadcasted) and place (your home or other stationary location with a TeeVee) critical to receiving the information or entertainment. So, you must plan your life around the information or entertainment that you want. With timeshifting and placeshifting you plan the information and entertainment into your life. Or when receiving it across the mobile network, little or no planning is required either.

Examples include, listening to podcasts at the laundrymat, a sporting event, on a commute, during class (you are recording the lecture, right?) while waiting for a bus, train or other transportation.

RE: placeshifting...I listen to podcasts on my mobile phone at the dog park. It could also be while I'm waiting for a dentist, doctor or hair stylist. Having podcasts on the device which is always with me is liberating from the whole planning cycle of placeshifting my fav content. This applies to video too as today I watch bliptv on my phone. I would also watch check out lots of other videos if I could.

in BlogHer starts an ad network on Mathew's comments
Hi Mathew,

The 25 bloggers selected are neither all of them nor the top 25. Blogher has formed an ad network specifically of Mommy bloggers from the larger community. Mommies are to be followed by other categories as you mentioned in your article. Food and beverage bloggers are indeed next, then Health and Wellness.

Apparently, the selection of category was driven by two factors. One, the advertising connections available to Blogher management based upon previous experience at women.com. Two, these are traditional women's categories which don't require educating advertisers.

in Mobile Jones buys into the “traffic is all important” meme on Scobleizer
One other point, Robert. Your title is misleading as my article focuses on the size of the community with only a single mention of MySpace having 2 1/2 times the traffic of Google.

Just to be clear.

in Mobile Jones buys into the “traffic is all important” meme on Scobleizer
There are a few more factoids that both explain the MySpace phenom and are relevant to it's continued potential.

1. There are some "...people who love what they do."
This MySpacer, and
this one
obliviously fit Robert's description.

2. One of my former colleagues has long experience in the music industry and explains, "...these days the *first* question a band hears when they approach a label is: 'What's your MySpace URL?'" It's expected that all music acts will have a MySpace presence.

MySpace continues to build on the raw community service they started with by adding more sophisticated tools like feeds, podcast support and mobile service. Media is a different animal from technology and the ringtone market is a perfect example of that fact. Also many appealing to the teen demo, it continues to be multi-billion dollar market. Personalization and who is in the community are the draws. I could say more, but it would give away the presentation for tomorrow's Bar Camp LA.
