Whatever one's theological disagreements with what's happened in Lakeland, accusing him of something that's not at all clear isn't the way to go. An unhealthy emotional relationship is not the same thing as an affair, and I think one of the reasons cross-gender friendships become 'emotionally unhealthy' is because Christian spirituality hasn't provided us with guidance to have emotionally healthy friendships with the opposite sex. I highly recommend anyone interested in exploring this matter further to read Dan Brennan's excellent blog.

Re: Maher’s Mass Mishap (by Becky Garrison)

Sure was, don. While I don't personally agree with every 'jot and tittle' of Frank's rationale in Pagan, I have to say that the vast majority of his reconstructiion project in Reimagining appeals to me greatly. If you're interested, I blog about this a little bit here.

Re: More on Pagan Christianity

The interesting thing about Pete's excellent cat-tied-to-the-tree story is that it can be equally employed by both you and Frank, 'Pagan Xianity' implies that postbiblical innovations were 'cats' born of expediency that might (or might not) have had immediate merit but could have disastrous long-term value; you're saying this about the New Testament traditions themselves. You could both be right - or both be wrong. Maybe this is uber-Protestant of me, but if I was forced to choose cats, I'd choose the ones closest in chronology to the peculiar genius of Jesus and his earliest apprentices, who produced at least one long-meaningful ritual in agape feasts, as you mentioned. That said, we don't have to choose either-or, I agree. Maybe we need to learn to take each cat down from the tree in time, love the kitties, pet them, and listen to them purr their mysteries.

Okay, it's obviously far too late now. I need to get some sleep!

Re: How to Spot a “Christian” Mystic

Heresy-hunters ataaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!

Just kidding, I still love you. :)

Re: The False Charity of Clothing Drives

Well said, Ariah. The other aspect of this, from a systems thinking perspective, is that if you're buying new and fashionable clothing to replace what you've given away, and you're not aware of where you're making your new purchase, you might be contributing to their poverty on a macro level. There is much legitimate debate over what a fair and living wage is for certain sectors of the globe, but we can all agree that our 'first world' desire for bargains at any price drives 'third world' wages down. I'm not saying that we should stop having clothing drives...but we should start asking larger questions too.
