They've taken the responsibility to ensure that members of eMOM understand what is acceptable and what isn't.

This program has been in place for years and troops are still writing in to request a civilian pen pal. I keep doing and continue to push forward and breakthrough. We both know I've hit my walls but I've been persistent in the knowledge that I can do more. I can do *anything* that I want. I can make my life what I want it to be.

What ChefMark says here matters, if you do what you say you're going to do, then you've shown you're willing to work hard to achieve what you want.

That was reinforced this morning. These things *are* in my reach, they always have been, it just means continuing to do what I know well (hard work) and being open to learning new things along the way.

One last thing, do not allow your past to help you put down your accomplishments. Leave everything negative behind. You have a choice to make yourself who you want to be. Only you can take that away through fear or influence of others thoughts. Don't let that noise get too loud. Believe in what you've done and what you are capable of and then do it.

Re: Understanding the credit crisis

Best explanation I've read yet of the current crisis.

Re: Tools I use on my Mac

Don't forget Yojimbo. It's not the beauty I'm objecting to. It's the sexualization of the girls that *have* worked hard to get where they are and they deserve to be recognized for THOSE accomplishments.

I'm glad you don't see a problem with it, but I do. I see a huge problem with celebrating women for the way they look rather than what they've done.

No objectification here. I think they are all beautiful women, but, I also think that they've done much more than being beautiful.

David, I really value what you're trying to say here, but I can't see fun in this really. I summed up my thoughts at Julia's blog (http://clipper.typepad.com/juliapatriciaroy/200...) but I'll say it again. I don't think it's a beauty contest, but I do think there's a lot better value in a) not judging at all and b) celebrating what someone has accomplished.

That is the frustrating point here, guys.

Re: Frozen Pea Fund

Connie,

The fact that the money is getting raised for research and that Susan got a bit of good news today is enough thanks from the universe.

Thank you for including me.

Re: Personalized Productivity

/chuckles/

5997! There are some really great suggestions.

The biggest thing thus far for me is that once I follow it's hard for me to unfollow someone because I usually find profoundly interesting things from MOST of the people I follow. Now, I have done a mass unfollow in one setting and turned off some people that I didn't have a real conversation with. I had to because it was important to me to hear the people that I do have conversations going with.

Ged, that's it exactly. It's an overload, which isn't USEFUL to anyone. Not to those I follow or those I read. The issue though to me, is that while Twitter didn't expect to get this big, having a way to organize information and staying organized from the start is the BEST way to start any venture. I wish that they could give us something to tag users with.

This really isn't about popularity to me. I genuinely like reading those I am following.

Jeff -
I would agree with you but I'm seeing some folks use Twitter for more important communications and assuming that I am reading. I'm not always, especially when traveling. You have to DM me to get my attention if I'm away from my computer.

Lori, Daniel,
I think those systems are great, but a lot of work that I don't have a lot of time to follow. I love Twhirl. I don't love missing tweets. I need something reliable and at this point it looks like unfollowing is the only way to partly ensure that.

Creating two accounts with two different clients running to keep up with the accounts takes up more of my time rather than less and it uses Twitter's servers lots more.

Especially I'm liking Ann's approach, but I definitely need to come to terms with the solution Daniel mentioned. My mileage varies from other's.

This is what it boils down to for each of us, isn't it?.

Michael, I agree, there are some problems with Twitter and I just hope that they can resolve them so that some point in the future I can follow everyone I want in a way that doesn't subtract from participating.

Re: New England girl at heart…apparently…

LOL. I'm being a bit more patient than I thought I'd be considering. I'm sure I'll hear more today or I hope rather.

Scott, technology is a miraculous thing. I called my mom to tell her as well. I don't think either of us believed that there would ever be anything like this! It could do so much for my life that I'm so in between feeling excited about the possibilities and scared for not being able to turn the sound off! I didn't know that you suffered from hearing loss as well.

Cathryn, most often on the phone I hear better without my aids to be honest. I'm very cautious about where I speak on the phone, I keep the volume levels pretty high and wing it.

Mostly my issues occur in crowded rooms during conversation both with and without my aids. In a room with a couple of people and no background noise I do fine but better with the aids, obviously.

One thing that's bugged me forever is that I can't hear my music on my iPod normally. I turn the sound up and I'm damanging my hearing further. Being able to listen to that normally would make me EXTREMELY happy.

Another is that after loud environments (bars) or after concerts, voices sound very warbly. Very distorted sound through a mic. Hence the reason I'm so quiet usually after hearing Matthew play!

Re: blogstring

Nathan, I really enjoy reading you and Sarah so it was a pleasure! :)

Re: Where Hope Floats

Chris,

Thank you for your comment. I'm happy that writing this had a chance to bring together something wonderful. It's great to hear the news that all is well and you look to be healing fast.

My test was for the fully implantable implant. I'm not sure if they had different qualifications, but it looks as if yours was as well from the photos?

My speech discrimination for my left ear was between 60-40% but they were firm that they could not accept me unless my scores were better. I wonder if that's because there was a high demand in our area? I will have to call the clinic and ask and see where they are on testing candidates.

By no means am I finished trying to get them to accept me but it seems as it's going to be a bit more difficult than I imagined it would be to make it happen.

I can only say that I know the future holds many changes and do not thing of this as my last chance to have the surgery.

As I'm reading your journal I'm realizing I'm not sure how I would feel only have one ear implanted either. No ego in the blog post, just a warning to the community that there is something that isn't comfortable going on for the musicians.

It's okay for people to stand up and make statements and ask questions about what they are being asked to do. Musicians that have to make the decision to attend and play SLCC are having a discussion and that is acceptable in any community.

Re: Long Live The RIAA?

Let's make this a conversation that isn't about the RIAA. We can hash that until blue in the face, it doesn't matter.

What the community needs is a way to gather podcasters, musicians and others involved in media in a campaign to make changes to the way that independent music is used. I believe that there are leaders in the community that want to make that happen, bringing them together and to the table for a serious talk should be the start.

Here are a few ideas:

- The PMN and other podcasting music directories should purchase a BMI and/or ASCAP licenses. Yeah the compensation would come from the companies and not the podcasters. The companies are responsible for the content on their websites/directories. Those with big pockets should swallow the cost. It's $300. It's not going to make or break the companies. When an artist is played on a podcast/downloaded they would receive *some* compensation. Would this be significant?

- As much as the RIAA has a point that all folks should have to pay for the music, the RIAA isn't concerned with paying you. I'm not going to hash that point at you because we've gone there and back. There are two ways of ensuring that music isn't downloaded and then able to be resold/stolen. Create a tracking system and monitor it. And educate those in college and high school why what they are doing is damaging and create awareness of why buying music is important.

- How can you make virtual purchases compensate you as much as disc sales do? Is Virtual Hot Wings a realistic model on how to make and sell a CD? A archive of music downloaded to your hard drive where you create the CD or just put the tunes on your mp3 player.

- All of the Second Life venues should start taking a hard look at purchasing a BMI/ASCAP license. From my perspective they can be held legally responsible for the charges of playing those covers/music if the wrong person starts paying attention. Eventually it will happen. This is the right thing to do legally and it covers them from being liable. If Linden Labs can be taken to court over adult content, then this will not be far behind.

- I don't get how asking to be paid for your work is asking for special treatment. The musicians involved agreed to front their travel expenses but to have to pay to attend the conference in addition to their travel, etc? That is just astounding. This point of view needs to change and fast. Otherwise resentment will build within the new media community. This is a place where, again, discussion needs to happen.

The "contract" that the musicians were asked to sign for SLCC wasn't a contract and I hope that the rumors that is being reworked are accurate for the community's sake.

Re: Long Live The RIAA?

Let me clarify here.

I do not think that podcasters should take a hit in any way shape or form. I do think that there has to be a better model. Most podcasters do this as a hobby or on their own time and maybe some of them use google ads to recover some cost of hosting, maybe they don't and do it for the love of doing so. If you know me, you know that I want to encourage the creative process, to free artists to be able to create without worrying about marketing or getting paid for their music being played.

Community discussions are going to move this forward.

Ed, good point. PMN buying one license would be pointless. Maybe a premium for more than one? Meh, it could just not reasonably work.

Turning the mindframe that music should be free will be a huge undertaking, perhaps one that should be folded in to creating awareness of artists and the new media community. Brogan posted about touching 5 people with various media that they might not have known about before. It's the same concept, reach out to 5 people that don't understand the effect of their bad habits.

Turning it around means creating respect for the work that podcasters and musicians do. Huge hill to climb, indeed.

Re: The Fans Throw a Video Party at CampEbel.com

Mooooooooooooooooo?

Re: Down Periscope

Psst. Now that we have the awareness what do we want to do with it?

Helping Matthew was my primary and still is my primary focus, because I believe in what he does. Keeping the momentum going has been work, but with Virtual Hot Wings, you're getting more than just some CD pasted together and there is more to come for that $20 investment of a great musician.

That said, there is so much more that can be achieved with the concept of VHW, there are approx. 10,000 bands/artists on PMN. I am motivated to do something bigger, to give exposure to all of those artists or at least a good majority of them. I am only one person which is where community comes in.

The question of rewards to the community has come up for me in relation to gaining support and participation of the fan video concept on http://www.matthewebel.net. People love rewards, people need motivation to do something good, even if it is something fun and worth doing. So it's a valid question, one I am attempting to answer today as we gear up for making deadlines for the fan video.

Re: 100 Comments- Mojo for Video

Cliche as it is, it's always about connection for me. If I connect with the subject *that* grabs me by the throat. If it makes me laugh. If it makes me cry. If it makes me sit down and say wow three or four times afterwards? If it motivates me to do MORE, to do better. Then I want to find out more about the subject or the person behind the video.

One fine example of that is Mitch Joel's personal branding session at PodCamp Toronto. I watched that and was blown away that I immediately grabbed his RSS feed and subscribed to 6POS. Even listening to the old shows as I come across time to do so.

Inspired by one video. Because his passion was apparent, his message was clear and his content is something that I needed to learn and focus on.

However, there is no one answer, each person is grabbed by something different. So, who do you want to attract?

Re: 5 Things to Do Thursday- Summer of Projects

Emails were easy. A lot of people I know lately are feeling stuck in this moment, stuck from moving forward.

My answer has become this: If you feel stuck, move. Do something that moves you forward to where you want to be. If you stay where you are then it's on you, you didn't take the next action to get you where you want to go. Don't complain to me that you are unhappy when you aren't doing anything to actively change that (this doesn't mean that I don't listen when someone needs me to). Wallow and then let. it. go.

I'm trying to apply that to myself everyday as well. All of my success (or failure) is up to me.

And to that end, I'm going to be working through some stuff while everyone is quiet for the day. If I'm getting especially long emails in return, I explain how hampering this is to actually responding.

If someone wants to write a 2 page email asking me for something, that's fine, as long as they realize that my response isn't going to be as long. When you join, figure out the norms of the community. Those add up to the things that you need to keep in mind in order to earn respect in the community, to build social capital if you will. If you troll, obviously you're not going to be listened to and perhaps even shut out of the community. Same applies if you walk around angry.

2. While the other person may not always agree with you, they are a human being with thoughts and feelings. Don't assume that you know best in every situation, listen, be thoughtful and treat everyone with the respect you want to garner some day.

3. Volunteer. Give to your community. No this isn't mandatory for participation and no I don't mean tweeting your "click on my junk" stuff (hat tip to
@AmberCadabra). The Twitter community doesn't consider that giving, but advertising. Take that into consideration with other social networks you become a part.

The last thing I want to say that I'm coming across more often than not lately is the faux celebrities you mention getting bashed for doing something and judged harshly. There's been an assumption that they are out for everything they can get.

This is simply NOT true. Okay there may be SOME self-absorbed people on the 'net, but most of those "celebrities are still human". Most are searching for happiness and success just like me.

If "celebrities" are held on a pedestal, of course they'll disappoint, because the raised expectations and the opinionated "things they should be doing" will crush all the things they ARE accomplishing. Something heavily on my mind given that today Obama will be sworn in.

Now I want to ran on your being realistic about time piece but I'll save that for another day. ;)

Re: How Not to Use Twitter

It's obvious that his client, Fed-Ex was appalled at his tweet. Something to make it more tasty as we ate a LOT of popcorn because it was cheap and filling. (I don't like ramen. :P)

Parmesan cheese plus a little bit of oil after the corn is popped. Or cinnamon plus sugar or splenda.

I wouldn't recommend those popcorn shaker things at the store, they have massive amounts of sodium in them.

Re: Scholarship Search Secrets on WCVB Boston 5

Ha! Since then we've talked on the phone, they've asked me to be a Fresh Face, emailed and sent me flowers.

Is it wonder I'm an extremely happy Freshbooks customer? Indeed, I am in love.

Re: Social Media and Video As Conversation Agent – Speaking at DMAW Confab

Jim,

Your insights from behind the camera and out on the road have shown the realities instead of the show and that you care to. Companies pulling new media into their fold and really embracing it (to use CC's word) shows that they care about their consumers opinions and needs.

But being willing to learn to do it RIGHT is a huge deal to me. If businesses are genuine in communicating, then they will learn to communicate, not throw me a bunch of links.

You totally understand and grasp new media and use it well, no worries there.

-Chel
