in The Social Construction of Gen Y on Investoralist
Thanks for mentioning my post. I would also like to point out that my limited experience in managing Gen Y reports has been completely different from those discussed in the Fortune article. I truly found that article to be both laughable and bizzare - upside down advice.

Look - there are clearly some extremists on the Israeli side as well - many of the settlers come to mind. As far as I am concerned, those don't belong in civilized company either. However, that doesn't excuse the joker of Tehran or mean that we should treat him as anything more than a dangerous dictator.

Dana, seriously, this guy denies the existence of the holocaust. He does not belong in civilized company. Period.

in internet job boards - wasted effort? on brip blap
I completely agree. LinkedIn is very effective for advertising / hiring / finding a job. Once I advertised on Monster and got 600 (!) responses. There was no way in hell I was going to go through all those. I ended up hiring a recruiter instead.

I can't believe folks still try to send their resume online.

If anything, you can use online boards to find out which jobs are available, and then try to network your way into an interview, rather than sending your resume into the Internet black hole...

in giving up on your career on brip blap
Steve, that's a great post. I have made a few career detours myself, some of them major, and it's only in the last 5 years that I believe I have finally found a career that I can stick with for the long term. In fact, I have written a series of posts about this just this week.

I am intrigued that you consider this a failure. By your description it sounds to me like a major success: figuring our early that the career you had chosen was not right for you.

Imagine if that had happened 4 years later. Imagine if it happened 12 years later...

Congrats on a major success.

in What makes a good blogger? on Investoralist
I have discovered that I have little interest in doing what it takes to be a successful blogger, i.e. draw a large audience. Doing this involves a great deal of linking back to other blogs and getting more involved in the blogger community.

I have also noticed that many of the topics I write about don't have a mass market appeal. So be it. I blog as a hobby and I am more interested in writing about the topics that are interesting to me than I am in drawing crowds of readers. Let whatever audience is interested find its way to my blog eventually. Or not... :-)

Congrats on the 1 month mark. Every great journey starts with the first step, yes?

I just found your blog through your link to mine, and spent some time reading some of your posts and your "about" section. A few comments:

1. Welcome to the PF blogger community!
2. Very, very nice debut - well written, thoughtful posts. Thanks for sharing.
3. I really envy your design... very, very cool!
4. I did have a technical problem subscribing, but that's been solved... :-)

I would love to have you write a guest post for Money and Such, if you want.

Dana Hey Shadox,

Thank you for the kind comments, I'm very flattered. The design is an almost off-the-shelf Wordpress theme. Like I said before on your blog, moving to Wordpress is really liberating (I have played with Blogger in the past as well), and I really recommend it, if you have the time to make the move. Of course, the problem is finding the time :)

I like your blog very much, and can only aspire to the consistency and longevity of it, 2 years! Would love to guest blog for you, I will contact you through email to set it up.

Amusing. There is a decent shot that she is right and that the company will not be able to produce the actual note. However, I would assume that if they sue her, they would have the right to ask her to produce her original form of the note...

in how I made a courageous decision to become an entrepreneur on brip blap
I don't know that it matters if people made a conscious decision to quit their jobs and start a business or were pushed into that decision by circumstances. I guess what counts is the ultimate result.

Steve @ bripblap @Shadox: I don't think it matters, either - but I think it DOES matter if you pretend that you made that choice yourself if the reality is that you were forced into it.

in how to take abrupt action on brip blap
There is a big difference between getting stuck in analysis paralysis and carefully weighing the pros and cons of what looks like an opportunity but may turn out to be a nightmare. Between losing an opportunity and taking a leap of blind faith, I will invariably let the "opportunity" go. Some risk is always necessary, but throwing all caution to the wind for fear of losing an opportunity is irrational.

in how to succeed at your job on brip blap
Not sure about this. I know quite a few lawyers, for example, who really hate their jobs but are still doing quite well and have made partners in their firm... it helps to like what do, but I am not sure it's an absolute necessity.

in free time does not translate to massive productivity on brip blap
Very, very true. They say that work expands to occupy all available time and resources and that's right on the money. It is amazing how much you can get accomplished when you have very little time and how little gets done when you have as much time on your hands as you want.

Although as an executive I can set my own schedule and work from home whenever I want, I pretty much never work from home. I like going to the office, talking to folks face to face and being in an environment which is work oriented. This greatly improves my ability to get things done.

It's not that the buyers are necessarily benefiting more than the seller (or creator) it is that both parties benefit in a fair market transaction. Either way, I agree that wealth is created. Hooray for capitalism!

in the riddle of steel on brip blap
Yes... the question is exactly HOW to move forward. Discipline is certainly key and with current stock market valuations I think that over time the stock market will generate good returns. The market is pretty much pricing apocalypse, and personally I don't see the four horsemen on the horizon.

My personal strategy has been to invest a fixed amount in the market on the 15th of each month, come hell or high waters. I have followed this approach since the trouble started in July 2007. So far, that strategy hasn't worked so well... but I am hopeful that in the long run, this is a solid approach that will take us where we need to go.

That's good advice, but of course, it could also be that you are not the kind of person that can be excited by your work long term, and that you require periodic change. Those creatures are known to exist.

in 5 signs your job sucks on brip blap
Yes - #1 - getting up in the morning sucks, but it's got nothing to do with my job. I love sleeping late.

#2 - are you kidding, who even has time to breath?

#3 - that would be fun.

#4 - I am still waiting for some "after hours"... :-) OK, I am exaggerating, but I work really long hours.

#5 - I mock everyone. I am an equal opportunity mocker.

I am pretty happy with my current gig. Does it show?
