I got one last week but it consistenly loses the Wifi connection after a few minutes, regardless of which router I connect to, and then I cannot reconnect no matter what I try. The only way to reconnect is to turn it off and leave it off for at least 10 minutes.... yes, weird!

BTW, I'm investigating the use of the AiGuru for a new social project I'm working on to bring video calling to the elderly, disabled and other socially isolate groups. What's really terrific is the sharing and chat features - myself and my business partner in the USA can now use the combination of gmail, gcalendar and gspread ;-) for 95% of 'Office' business needs :-)

Re: Feeds for forums

You're right Paul - eventually all aggregators will support hierarchical OPML browsing. I just use the term "Feed Grazer" to differentiate between the aggregators that already support hierarchical browsing and those that don't yet.

However, that's not quite the end of the story as regards feed grazers. Its not just about the ability to navigate multi-level hierarchies - its about providing advanced management features for transient feeds. These include drag and drop re-arrangement of nodes and hierarchical tree branches, support for reading lists (ie. dynamic feed lists), etc (hey, I'm on the board of Grazr Corp. - I can't give it all away! ;-)

Another point of difference is that Grazers approach feed management from the "subscriptions are dead" point of view. In an RSS everywhere world, ie. where there are thousands of feeds you'll want quick if fleeting access to) it makes no sense to talk about subscriptions. We can't possibly make long term contracts with each and every feed. What we'll want is a way of managing feeds such that we can access them briefly in an organized way for as long as they are relevant to us and then be rid of them just as quickly.

Re: Zidane is a hero?

Well said Paul, wise words indeed.

Re: Google’s next trick

I love the new Google Reader Paul but I was really scratching my head with regard to that feature. It was all of 6 years ago when I setup in business and first thought of myself as a web developer. One of me first contracts was a website for the local parish council. As luck would have it An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern was calling around to launch some other scheme/association in the parish and we got him to launch the website at the same time.

What amazed me was the way in which the whole thing was choreographed. Bertie's personal assistant literally rehearsed every footstep Ahern would take and estimated how long it would last..... "So An Taoiseach will enter at this door.... walk across the room thus.... sit down at this chair..... and push this button.... then he'll stand for a photograph and exit via that door".

Of course "pushing the button" didn't actually do anything significant but I guess it cut the virtual tape ;-)

Re: Bertie came

Did I actually write "one of *me* first contracts"....? In fact I found it very interesting to hear some of the people in the coworking community looking for ways to 'tune into' geographically based coworkers when they travel. I think when Twitter introduces groups it will provide an ideal means of facilitating that. I expect we'll initially see an 'Irish' group on Twitter and then more local ones as the number of users goes up - Waterford, the People's Republic of Cork, etc ;-)

Re: The Twiterati

Woah, didn't of that - webographically too. But I bought the first season on DVD 2 years ago and, like you, couldn't stop watching it once I started. I very quickly went through the first 5 seasons. So 24 is still my all-time top TV program, heart-pounding stuff all the way.

I was nearly ready to give up on Lost myself after the first 4 episodes of last season. It was just getting dull. However, this season has brought great rewards for those who stuck with it - each episode has been excellent, almost reaching 24 level consistency of quality IMHO. What's really made it great this season is that they've dropped the flashbacks in favor of flashforwards which has give a totally new dimension to the mystery element.

Re: It’s tough to make predictions, especially about the future

Mike, I'm a bit late in hearing this news and just wanted to wish you the best of luck in future. Now I generally have no loyalty towards any gadget manufacturer but have probably come closers to being a fanboy of Nokia than any other brand. Having owned a 3650 and 6630 (before I lost it) I was very happy with the S60 interface and inclined to imagine I'd have no time for UIQ nor any need for a touchscreen.

But I admit one month later that I'm a convert to both touchscreen and stylus. That's not to say I'd consider an iPhone, I still wouldn't, but it is to say I'd definitely feel now that I was missing something by going back to S60. The only reason I *would* have considered an iPhone is for the browsing capability but I've got to say I'm so thrilled with the experience of Opera Mini 4 on the P1i that I can't now imagine any advantage in mobile Safari. Opera Mini 4 kicks ass! And I can zoom in and out and navigate around with ease using the stylus or even my finger. It really feels like the (full) web on a mobile.

The QWERTY keyboard on the P1i did take me some time to get used to though. I used to be under the impression that it would be an immediate boon to my text entry speed but what I learned was interesting. Even though I'm a touch typist I came to realize that skill is based on instinct rather than thought. Pretty much like riding a bike. Which mean that I couldn't actually get my thumbs to find the right keys without looking at them. However, a few weeks later and I seem to have retrained my brain to locate the right keys with my thumbs too. Meaning that I can now compose text messages with greater speed and accuracy than ever I could with my Nokia. By the way the predictive text is also much better than T9. Not only does the P1i predict words but also sentence fragments.

Bernie has extended the loan but when he eventually recalls the P1i I've a feeling I'm going to be left with a very tough decision. Go back to Nokia or get another touchscreen SE.

Re: Are you going to buy an iPhone? - Paul Walsh, the Irish Opportunist

XDA? A small list will do to get started. A QIK channel is good but it's also nice to be able to follow individual contributions to the 'lifestream'. Having being involved to a degree in the organization of Paddy's Valley I'm very interested in following the experiences of all those travelling on the Web Mission.

Re: Cool Web 2.0 image editor

Glad you found out about PXN8 Robert, it really is a terrific little service. Pleeease! It's one of the most important data-streams in my life and save me loads of time every week by filtering out the noise and bringing me the important stuff.

Don't mind Riley, he's way behind the times on this. I can't understand how he didn't see the writing on the wall. Last January I started writing about “Google ReWriter” -

“…. blog posting, commenting and social bookmarking are various forms of the same thing - annotation…. we must shake off the page-centric mindset. The ‘Wide Web was about reading pages, the Live Web is about annotating microchunks (e.g. permalinks). While we tend to categorize our annotation according to the point of submission, each form is essentially the same. Whether to your own blog, someone else’s blog or a third party note-taking site it’s the same mechanism. Different context but same mechanism. What sense does it make that I have to open my Performancing plug-in to blog, visit a blogger’s web page to comment and invoke a del.icio.us pop-up to take a note? None! I should be able to perform each annotation from within my aggregator - a single unified interface to the Live Web. And I’m betting that’s exactly what Google ReWriter will become.”

I followed up in February -

“…. how will we publish these microformatted comments? With our Google ReWriters (or other 2nd generation aggregator/annotators). We can already use Google Reader to annotate (tag) posts, just press ‘T’. A new version will allow us to comment, just press ‘C’. These comments will be microformatted and tossed back into our uniFeeds, there to be scanned and recombined back into the discussion flow by any microformat aware aggregator.”

Not meaning to blow my own trumpet but it’s been very obvious to many that this was on the cards.

Re: Digging an elite news source

I think you hit the nail on the head here Robert. However I consistently find myself clicking through on 8 out of every 10 items in your linkblog.

On days when I'm extremely busy I only read the feeds from my friends, techmeme and your linkblog. On July 9th 1939, Pan Am's luxury Flying Boat, the "Yankee Clipper" landed at Foynes. This was the first commercial passenger flight on a direct route from the USA to Europe. During the late 1930s and early 1940s, this quiet little town on the Shannon became the focal point for air traffic on the North Atlantic...... Captain Charlie Blair, later to become the husband of the actress Maureen O'Hara, had made the first non-stop passenger flight from Foynes to New York in 25 hours, 40 minutes...."

Re: 3 news sites to launch shortly

Looking forward to seeing wifimapper. Personally speaking I'm not the most outward-going person in the world and find myself at Barcamps gravitating towards people I recognize/know. And I know I'm not the only one - it seems to be a fairly common geek trait!. So perhaps one session dedicated to speed networking for those who'd like to make new contacts (like me) in a less awkward manner. Just do it like speed-dating - eg. divide the attendees into two even groups, allow 2 or 3 minutes for each pair to chat, ring the bell, everyone moves to the next person in line, etc,.

[Yes, I have been speed-dating and it works great :)]

Re: The grand plan by Patrick Collison

Great debate/discussion here everyone, keep it going. Just in relation to Vinny's point above - "Would love to see 10 companies reading this come together and raise enough between them to support a couple of ideas" - I'd like to point to a related idea I posted on Joe's blog just now -

"What I’d like to see too is more €6,000-ish grant schemes like the level 1 awards made by Social Entrepreneurs Ireland each year. I was one recipient of such a grant last year and it gave me the opportunity to invest a lot of time getting my project off the ground. @keithdkennedy is after announcing on Twitter that he has just received news today that he is to receive a level 1 awards through this year’s scheme. And I know that’s going to make a big difference to him in terms of the commitment he can give to his project idea. In some terms there’s not a lot you can do with €6k but in other ways there is, as many other alumni of Social Entrepreneurs Ireland have proven over the last few years. And access to the Social Entrepreneurs Ireland network is invaluable.

I often wonder why us Tuesday-pushers don’t create a similar ‘crowdsourced’ grant scheme where we use Pledgebank or similar crowdfunding service to fund (non-social) business ideas IQ-prize style by the group of people donating to the fund… and I do mean donating. We could then provide advice/feedback on an on-going basis in the same way Social Entrepreneurs Ireland do, through an on-line forum/network/twitter.

I for one would be happy to pledge €60 to such a fund and I’m sure we could find 100 other on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and so on. In fact I’d be happy to make such a donation every couple of months. Anyone want to help make it happen?

Re: Co-working Belfast Plan

Delighted to see this getting off the grounds lads, well done!
