Yes Batterystatus does a decent job of showing the broadcast info on the today screen, but as i noted in the last, this feature sucks battery like anything.

Christiana - Many have suggested AVG for AV. As I mentioned earlier, one thing which I didn't want to take risk was w.r.t to virues and hence opted for a paid one :)

Jason - Will definitely give IZARC a shot !

Antony - I have no other complaint on WMP except the startup speed. IE is defintely slow to load and use compared to Chrome which I am currently using, though I accept that IE8 looks cleaner compared to previous versions.

Regarding mail client, I have always found it easier to use Gmail rather than a client especially if you access mail from multiple computers.
When Gmail did come up with IMAP support, I quicky switched to a desktop client but found it way too slow :) (especially the synching of lables etc)

Thunderbird is one of my favorite, I liked Windows Live Mail too ..

AVG free, how is the CPU and memory usage of this AV ?

Right Ian, it does the same thing, but there is an additional pain of finding and typing the mail ID.
You need to hover over the email, wait for the tooltip to pop up with the email id, you might have to copy it if its too long and then paste it with an additional "from:" prefix :)

I just made is sound difficult, but I agree the route you suggested also should work.

Also I guess "filter messages like these" does more than just filtering mails based on the "from" header. I read that it does process the mailing list mails in a different way and might be helpful over there.

Yeah I don't know how you can get a iPhone from US now. I have heard that you need to activate at the store. Not sure what charges you need to pay if you cancel the contract. If you can cancel the contract and still own the phone, then you can definitely break it and use anywhere.

Kushal - I am sure you can upgrade to 1.1.4. You need to put the phone on restore mode and upgrade the firmware.

Check iLiberty, the interface is pretty straight forward and should help you to easily upgrade to 1.1.4

2.0 upgrade should also be possible once its available and once the iPhone Dev team comes with a tool for the same.

WinPwn is a new tool which is supposedly better than ZiPhone or iPlus/iLiberty (I haven't had the opportunity to use it)

Tarun - I read that that old versions of iPhone are not available and the new iPhone is coming in on July 11th. The new one has 3G and many other goodies. The new one also has 2.0 version of the firmware which is supposedly already broken by iPhone Dev team. If you buy this, the instructions on my post might not be applicable. I will keep you posted on the 2.0 unlock procedure.

No vaibhav, the unlocking is pretty safe. If something does go wrong, you can always put the phone in restore mode and put in the actual firmware to get it back to normal.

The phone becomes unusable if the baseband gets corrupted and with iPlus, they don't touch the baseband and hence is safer.

Yes follow all the steps as in that article. Note that as mentioned in step 1, I did not restore to 1.1.4 (Since my phone firmware was already 1.1.4, I skipped that step)

Also before running iplus -u, ensure that you copy/use the international payload

Use iPlus, its worked for me with no trouble and since its loads a fake bootloader it is easily upgradable to the actual version

You can even use Ziphone and stay on the same bootoloader version, however you need to downgrade the baseband :)

If you are not comfortable using the command line interface of iPlus, try iLiberty+

Yes after unlocking everything is working fine, no complaint on ANY feature.

One you startup your unlocked iphone, you should see on installer app. Use this to install the Bigboss preferences application, using which you can turn off the SSH service and save battery.

The baseband version seems, regarding the Bootloader, you can install an app called BBInfo.

You should probably be on 3.9Fake Boot loader (if iPlus was used) and you don't need 4.6 till iPhone comes with the next firmware upgrade.

Also do remember to install Services app or BigbossPref app to turn off the SSH; its one big battery sucker :)

Put in the SIM and see if it latches onto the network in India. If it does, well and good.
You might also want to check on the working of WiFi and YouTube. Thes are the other 2 apps which generally are broken in a UNLOCKED phone.

If you are not able to latch on to the GSM network in India, check on what firmware version on the phone.

You can put the device in recover mode and restore the 1.1.4 Firmware (pwsi file) and then jailbreak/activate/unlock using iPlus2.0 or iLiberty

I was also checking on the laws and all I read is that its definitely not illegal to hack the iPhone; After you have paid for the phone, you own it and you can do whatever you want and I don't think the manufacturer will care;

However the device will no longer be covered under the warranty terms and conditions.

Rajat, the boxed device itself was on 1.1.4 which was broken using iPlus

No Signal Issues
SMS is working fine (Though I find the "chat" kind of feature annoying)
Google Maps also has no trouble in "pinning" the search locations..

By the way firmware upgrade on a jailbroken phone is something that I have not researched and if you are doing the upgrade, please do write a short summary on how you did it.

Pavan, you dont need to worry about bricking your iPhone, you always have a recovery mode available and you can always download the 1.1.4 firmware and load it back via iTunes.

All you need to take care is not to change the baseband (the gsm modem related part)

ZiPhone for one downgrades the baseband (if you don't downgrade the baseloader) while breaking iPhone 1.1.4

iPlus installs a fake 3.9 bootloader and keeps the baseband intact and when a new firmware update comes from Apple you can even go back to 4.6 bootloader.

Pavan, are you sure 25k is for the 16GB iPhone ! I have seen many people selling the 8GB ones for around 22K

Anyway getting it from an apple store in US is the most safest and cheapest also i believe (costs you around 500USD==20K INR)
(Its possible that the ones sold in Bangalore are got directly from the factory in Shenzhen)

And regarding unlocking, you don't even need to go all the way to Brigade, use iPlus its safe and pretty easy :)

anil, not sure if your point is entirely valid. even if one color cartridge goes out, you can always print using the black cartridge (You need to set the printing preferences properly)

But I do agree on the color cartridge display, it was showing 75% and after few prints, it had dried out !!

yup same case at my workplace, i couldn't configure the gmail account on office 2003.
For gmail you do change the imap and smtp ports and I wonder if these are blocked by the corporate firewalls.

Probably need to run ethereal once and see if it reveals something.

For me Live Mail was pretty fast. Did you have too many mail headers which had to be downloaded ?

You might have made the right decision. One thing I have noted is for the vista to run smoothly, your laptop needs to have external graphics card (NVidia or ATI) and if you have to have this you have to shell out extra 300-400$ while buying the laptop :)

Yeah even after using Beta Editions, I hadn't found anything great to upgrade to Vista.
But now since I have upgraded to vista, I am in search of the goodies. Few of them would be the integrated search feature. I am so disorganized and this feature helps me to find stuff faster (I am sure i could have done the same with Google desktop search or live search, believe me, the integrated search is much more powerful and useful).
The ultimate had other goodies like dvd maker (i recently burnt 5 dvd's into a nice dvd movie). I might have had to shell couple of $ buying a similar software from Nero.
9K is little expensive and might not be worth the money, only time will tell :)

Dan I am suspecting that the ActiveSync service hasn't properly opened the bluetooth port.

On your desktops bluetooth manager add an "Incoming port"
In the activesync select the selected port and a refresh on device should show up the ActiveSync service.

If it still doesn't show up try this, its wierd but I do it when activesync doesnt work.

I open the ActiveSync connection settings, and uncheck the COM port connection. Press Ok. Now again click on the connection setting and check the COM check box (selecting the right bluetooth) COM port. Press OK and try refreshing in the device.

Philip, not sure why you are unzipping the CAB file. Just copy the CAB file using activesync and click on the file on your device. It should launch the installer.

Duff, you could turn the T9 phone pad sound off via the options

Go to Programs -> Settings -> Input
Select PhonePad and select "Options". There is checkbox which needs to be unchecked :)

Regarding MessageEase, I did have a look while writing this post, but didn't go further. Will definitely try it out.

Albert, the HTC Touch device that I use is powered by Windows Mobile 6 and the T9 phonepad works with no issues.

Regarding setup, I am not sure why you are extracting the contents of the CAB file. Just copy the CAB to the device using ActiveSync and click on the same to launch the setup

Regarding the SPB full keyboard, I am surely going to buy it if its 5$.

Do try out TenGO also. Have heard of it a lot. But as of now I am more than comfortable with the T9 keypad.

As you mentioned the camera is pretty good, I have couple of photos taken on HTC touch uploaded here (its definitely not bad)

The speakerphone does have issues,and I am sure its more of a hardware issue and cannot be fixed by some firmware update.

Nevertheless a great phone at a great price !

There is a dark phone pad (International Cab); I tried the English version; but the keypad didn't pop up properly. I was able to see only 1 column of the keypad.

Anand, I'm not sure, none of my folks use Hutch so couldn't test :)
As far as I know, when you buy from the shop, there is no lock as such on the SIM.It should work with Hutch !

There is a chain of mobile shop called Global access in bangalore, call them up and clarify on that and probably you could have a Touch when you go back from Bangalore :)

Anand this is only the MMS configuration.

I tried to configure Airtel Online, I was told that after activating that it wouldn't work on HTC Touch and that I had to only go for Airtel Mobile Office, its little expensive as of now and the speed is not worth the price Airtel is asking for :)

MMS activation is free and you pay 5Rs when you send a Multimedia message.

Sangunni - For one, Outlook Express isn't part of the Microsoft Office family. The trial version of Outlook bundled by HTC is probably prompting to tell that it will over write the older version of Microsoft Outlook.

Also you cannot sync the contacts via Outlook Express, you need Outlook.

K999 - You might need to upgrade the firmware for changing the language. Do check out the XDA forums for more information on this.

Prakash - You could have easily looked up the manual in the HTC web site ! Here is the link for you reference

You seem to have a real unusual problem. If the phone is still on warranty I suggest you to go and get it checked immediately. The other thing you can do is also to put in another SIM say airtel and then try making a call.

After using a iPhone from the past 1 week, I am not sure I'm in a state to recommend buying an HTC touch now :)

There is no issue with the ringer volume, however if you do put a active conversation on speaker, it isn't very clear.

Camera is basic 2MP camera without flash and hence you can't expect much from it.

Battery isn't really bad and I have not found myself charging it frequently. If you use Wi-Fi extensively it might drain the battery fast.

Wi-Fi works great, no trouble there !

Reading stuff on a small device is something which I find it difficult, if you have no such trouble, then there are lot of applications that can be installed to read stuff on the phone.

You can buy online in Indiaplaza or buy in any of the popular mobile stores. IndiaPlaza should give you a good estimate of the current market price.

Sameer, I am not sure why you are trying the dial up approach, if you have a wireless router, just use the Wifi feature on HTC to connect to the router.

The router should assign your phone a IP address (if dhcp is enabled) and you should be all set to access the internet.

As far as I know Airtel has been giving wrong information saying that GPRS doesn't work on this phone.

Most of the mobile service providers have the option of sending the GPRS and MMS setting over the air (OTA). What the support guy is telling is that he doesn't have the OTA setting for HTC Touch.

You have to manually configure the GPRS; Unfortunately I haven't activated GPRS on my phone, but basically you need to create a new connection with APN : airtelgprs.com and use that connection as the default connection. It should work, I would also suggest you to get in touch with the technical department of Airtel.

I am not proclaiming to be a HTC Touch guru here, and for the language issue, I remember mentioning "try" in one of my earlier replies :)

At least on Windows OS, the regional settings is the one which helps in setting up the language (and yes you need install the language packs separately), I guess on Windows Mobile, it isn't that straightforward !

At least I have read in few forums that the device itself has these packs installed and hence easy to switch between the languages.

Please do post here, if you do find a way to change language, I will also continue my search :)

@deep, I also had the no number display problem, not sure how i got it fixed. But I deleted all the SIM contacts and I have only Outlook contacts (synced via my desktop outlook). Try creating outlook contacts in phone and see if the problem is fixed.

@Neo, congrats on your phone. So are you saying that the T9 keyboard comes by default, that is great ? Regarding videos, if you want to take videos using the phone, you can capture in 3 formats. Mpeg4, h.263 and motion jpeg.

If you want to play videos, you should be able to play whatever plays with windows media player. I need to investigate to see if there a similar player as VLC

Lokesh, Glad you found the post useful. And you definitely don't need strong fingers for TouchFlow to work :) But I can tell one thing, you might rarely use that feature :)

@anant, HTC Touch does not have GPS ! You might have to look at other altenate phone from HP (iPAQ)

@pravin, download activesync and it will help you to sync contacts/tasks/notes etc (if you are on vista, Windows mobile device center will help you accomplish the same)

Fahad... GPRS might suck up some of the battery, but the main battery killer is the WiFi.
I for one have never found out how much the battery lasts .. once i am at work, i connect it to my work PC (so that the tasks and meetings are always upto date).

Meanwhile if you got GRPS/Mobile office working, you should definitely share the details. It would be helpful for many users. Let me know if you want to write a guest post on this blog :)

@pramod, i could only get the MMS setting for Hutch. For airtel, the gprs and mms settings are similar. If its the same case for hutch, let me know, i will send across the MMS configuration.

@ahmed, try doing a HARD RESET, the manual has instructions for doing the hard reset. It should hopefully take care of your problem.

@atul, I am not sure of the current price now, check in ebay or rediff etc, they give a good estimate of the CMP; again market price will be less than what is mentioned in these sites.

@tirath,
Fahad can hopefully share the settings he has done on his mobile and you should once verify.
You can access internet via GPRS (while roaming) or using WiFi/USB while at home.

Cesar, I didn't understand as to what you wanted. You can always change the language via Settings -> System -> Regional Settings (you will be prompted to restart the device)

I too had the trouble of making the work when I went out of India. I was prompted to input the unlock code and I got the code using the tool mentioned in this link.

Also I am sure the unlocking is more of a software thing and the warranty should still be valid.

The number of handsets in the market is quite limited i guess and stores will not show you a demo piece, unless they have received one from the manufacturer. You can even ask for a demo piece of N95, you would get the same response.

I would suggest you to checkout the HTC touch vides on Youtube for a "virtual demo"

Regarding the touchscreen lifetime, it shouldn't be a big issue. The screen is designed to handle constant inputs I believe and they do come with a screen protector as well!

Yes I have heard a lot of bad about Airlift and it seems people haven't got the cab on time.
So be prepared with a backup plan. The VOLVO service does seem to go empty towards airport, something which you should keep as a backup.

Suresh, Yes Folder Size is a nice utility and have used it in the past.

The unique feature in WinDirStat is the "TreeMap"; it shows the big files instantly without me needing to dig through the directories :).

Say with foldersize, it might show one directory taking 10GB, but I do need to traverse the directory tree to find the "culprit" file/folder.

VVS, this tool will help in identifying the culprit files which are taking a lot of space on your disk (Treemap makes it very easy to identify the files without navigating through the folders)

Omkar - You might want to check if the problem is with the Memory card itself. you can try using it with a PC(Memory card reader). If its still trouble, you should use the warranty on the phone.

I have tried pairing with Jabra headset and have not run into a situation where I tried to pair one more headset with the same handset.

The headset as such should support pairing with multiple handsets. However the device probably should pair with only one bluetooth headset.

The incoming calls/voice has to be diverted to the bluetooth headset and it pretty much creates a situation where the handset has to pick one of the headsets and I am sure there is no concept of active bluetooth device.

So try removing the existing device and try adding the Plantronics and let me know how it went !

Yup I am a big SE fan. When it comes to symbian based phones there is one bulky p990 and the m600 you mentioned.

HTC for one is a touch phone. Windows mobile 6 isn't too bad compared to Symbian. Display is large yet the phone is smaller than M600 :) Also has a camera which isn't too good but its missing in M600 and the list of goodies in HTC goes on..

Meanwhile my friends were surprised to see a non SE phone in my hand :) I see that you too are a big SE fan :)

when i wrote this post, I read a lot of artciles and monitor reviews (including lcd terminologies); i didn't read much good about viewsonic, in india its one of the cheaper alternatives, but technically they don't come up to the class of Dell or Samsung. Some of the factors you should consider (other than size/max resolution) is the response time (for gaming), height adjustability(including potrait/landscape mode) and the different inputs available. I wouldn't want to buy a 22/24" and be only able to connect my laptop.. i would like to have the composite inputs (can plug in the DVD and other thigs) or S-Video etc. On this front Dell rules.

I read about samsung being the one matching Dell in terms of display and their high end monitors aren't really for personal use :)

Checkout Dell US website, they do sell mointors from other vendors as well.. have a look at the popular monitors there ...

Do point me to the viewsoinic reviews that you mentioned in the comment.

Since I wrote this post, Dell has bought in lot of models, which are worth checking out. I have done lot of research and Dell monitors stand out. I would suggest not to go for Viewsonic/HP. Samsung is good but very expensive i believe :)

Yeah the 19K monitor is a entry level monitor and is probably not the latest model (Even the latest 20" model costs 25K) So do compare the features, before finalizing on one.

I would definitely like to have composite input/s video other than the DVI; I am just waiting for the price to come down :(

Shiv, even samsung monitors are not cheap, their professional series monitors are quite expensive.

Once you go for a LCD monitor exceeding 20", there is a drastic change in the price. Today I called up Acer, even he is quoting 40k for 22" monitor !!!!

If i compromise on 19", then I guess I have lot of options :)

Generally when the askismet web service is down, there are chances of spam entering your posts. However I/We are seeing lot of spam even when the service is running normally. I hope Matt is aware of this :)

Incremental backup is definitely a pain. Organizing and backing up photos is definitely not straightforward.

I for one like Flickr even because of the powerful tagging feature.

The last point that you mentioned is what exactly has happened with rising popularity of digital cameras :)

Vasu, Google Reader is not bad, but it doesn't suit the number of feeds that I read and the application is not scalable I feel.

The way most of us read feeds is to first check the title and then skim the content a little and if its good, read the entire post. (Atleast this is how I read the feeds)

In Google reader, everytime I click on a feed, it takes some time to load. Partly I have to even blame the broadband connection. In US its pretty fast I believe.

Ramki, I have tried most of the readers that you have suggested. Few of those lacked in UI navigation and few had problems in downloading the feeds (very slow download of feeds). In some I couldn't set the links to open in an external browser. Some of the readers (i guess even omea, is written in Java, and I have seen MFC/.NET based readers do better than the Java ones )

I always faced some or the other problem with these alternate feedreaders. FeedDemon was perfect, you would also probably agree, if you try it. The only negative is the price attached to the application :)

Meanwhile you have a good review on Omea as well.. :)

I just checked on how it behaves at my workplace. I logged in to one of our dev boxes using my credentials, created a file and checked the file permissions. Both the user and group have "rw" access.

If you login via a terminal and create a file, with what permissions is the file created ? I guess the behavior should be same via eclipse RSE also unless you are using different credentials while logging in from RSE.

Vasu, I just checked Any DVD conveter. It can rip DVD into multiple formats. So the input format is only DVD(VOB)
But movavi accepts input files of different types and this is where the program stands out. It can do conversion among multiple formats.

John, the point was that Google and Yahoo market their products in their search engines. MSN kind of gave an unbiased result.

Its not just restricted to Desktop search. Check for Email/Mail and you would see Yahoo and Google putting in their Yahoo Mail and GMail in the first place. But MSN doesn't even list Hotmail in the top 10 !!!

Arnold I agree with your point that some "feedfetchers" might contribute to the change in count. But I didn't observe it few weeks/months back. I am noticing this problem only from the past week.

The 4 subscribers might also be due to some "feed bots" :)

Also feedburner probably cannot let out the algorithm that they use to caculate feed readers. If its revealed, there are probably chances of gaming

aqwik69 - Touch does have a SIM slot, please do refer to the manual to find the slot and as many might no, the slot isn't one of the easiest to find and operate.

Ankit - Discard the last 2 digits of the generated 10 and I doubt if the call errors are related to unlocking.

Mark - You do need to insert a SIM, only that it should be one provided by a different service provider, not the one onto which the phone is locked into

Michael, thanks for noting my post. As I mentioned in the post, I was very much impressed by the "smoothness" of the app and also by the clean User Interface.

Here are some of my inputs:
1. I did try enhancing/fixing some of the photos and when I navigated to the next photo, it was saved automatically - There was no prompt by the application (Not sure if there is an option to disable this)
2. Like Live Writer, the tool should open up and allow third party developers to plug-in features. Especially for uploading/downloading/tagging of photos. I would love if Live Gallery integrated with Flickr (More so if it could synchronize the tags and captions). That would be a killer app since there are few/no powerful desktop clients for Flickr.

I have used picasa in the past;for some reason I don't like the tool. After seeing your comments, I downloaded picasa again. Here are my observations
1. Picasa loaded the images in My Docs/Pictures folder and it took more time compared to Live Gallery.
2. I don't like the way it scrolls when I change between albums.
3. Picasa by default shows the image in a pretty cramped space, the left toolbar and the bottom box take bulk of the space.
4. No tagging/rating of photos (correct me if I have missed this feature - I did note that you could "star" a photo)
5. I totally don't like the timeline feature. Not all user friendly. Photo gallery handles it better.

Please do try out Live gallery and let me know what you like and dislike in Photo gallery compared to Picasa.

I too sent a forum thread which suggested uninstalling the bluetooth drivers.

In Dave's case, the non ability to pair from the device might also be the reason for activesync issue !

Everything that you have done to setup bluetooth looks fine. Once you create a new incoming port and set it on Activesync, delete the partnership with the device. (Optionally restart the system/activesync) and see that COM port is still set to what you had assigned.

Enable bluetooth on the device, make it discoverable and initiate a device search from your laptop. This time you should see "ActiveSync". Also do try opening activesync on the device and select "Connect via bluetooth" option.

Regarding pairing from device, I am not sure what passcode you are entering. For any pairing the passcode has to be entered on both devices, so if you input on the device, you should be prompted to enter the same on the laptop.

Did the COM ports change on ActiveSync after restart ? It shouldn't, if the activesync is not being shown as service, its either because the service is not running or corrupted. You can try reinstalling ActiveSync

Snads, I have found out that most of the readers of this post skip step 1 of this tutorial.

You first need to setup a working bluetooth partnership between your PC and the mobile.
(Try also sending files either way to test the bluetooth connection).

After that if you start ActiveSync you should see it as a service when you refresh on the mobile device..try again and let me know how it goes...

Czaneil, while setting up the bluetooth connection, you should see "Activesync" service being displayed (picture shown below).

zac, sorry for the late reply. You don't need to re establish connection every time. At max you might toggle the bluetooth adapter(on/off), however once you switch it on, all you need to do is to ask activesync connect via bluetooth to your PC.

And yes since wifi sucks battery big time, it makes more sense to use bluetooth

As much as I struggled with the colors, I am now struggling to find the right image. I am regularly checking sxc.hu and also deviantart for good images. but I need something light and which doesn't look bad with a "repeat". since the header is a 100% width box, finding the image is becoming more difficult :)

Regarding the freeze, I don't seem to have done anything. But I did ran html validation yesterday and there was one div end tag was missing. I am not sure if that fix fixed the freeze as well.

I guess the 3columnk2 is no longer compatible with wordpress 2.0. Squible is a nice theme and I have tried mods of this theme as well.

As of now I am happy with the minimalistic them that I am currently on, except the header but I will resolve it soon

I guess after moving the page menu from sidebar, I have now some space to add mybloglog and twitter to the sidebar.

Never heard of britepic.. definitely will have a look at it. Thanks.

ATI website doesnt seem to provide these driver, the are pointing to get it from the notebook vendors.

I am not sure whether this is intentional, but this seems to be a common problem with everyone who is upgrading to 2Mbps and this happened to me also.

When I requested for upgrade to 2mpbs, I was given a call the next day and told that its upgraded
I run a test at http://speedtest.touchtelindia.net and the max speed is somewhere near to 512kbps

I had to call up Airtel atleast 5 times and finally I got it upgraded to 2mbps

Many of my friends who upgraded faced the same situation. Airtel upgrades only to 512. I hope its not intentional from Airtel.

So do a speed check and if its still around 512kbps, you are not upgraded to 2mbps. Call airtel and get it corrected soon :)

Vedu, 3GB might be little less, I often download SUSE releases and its around 3GB !!

By the way the customer representative was saying that they will introduce unlimited download plan as well !!!

Vasu, nothing extra for the upgrade and I am just trying it out for one month and then I will rollback, I also need unlimited download limit :) Also check with airtel, if they can upgrade your 256kbps to 512kbps unlimited. Airtel is offering free 512kbps upgrade for 12 months !!

Anand, you do have an intersting view, but my point would be that what would take 1hr on a 256kbps connection would probably take 1/8th of the same 1hour.

As mentioned in my blog I never checked in detail the features of Krugle and "Find in Comments" did throw up good results. (I will do it :) )

However I am interested in knowing how krugle gives priority when you select "Found in -> Any Area".

I was seeing that for a search "Convert String to int", the engine was giving more priority to the "functions" in the first page of results.

Probably Krugle can give the top results of each search domain i.e Functions,Source Code,Function call etc. Or there can be option (checkbox) to do this, I believe it might provide better results in the first page.

On google blog search I have seen less spam, however the content is pretty old when compared to technorati search results.

To summarize, technorati has better search result, only that it is generally hiding between the spam posts and technorati will become much better if they resolve this.

The UI enhancements have been great, however the change in database code is not backed up by performance data.

It would be interesting to know where exactly the performance tweaks have been done.

Regarding Autosave, I do accept that I generalized it a little bit, the absence of this feature was one of the reasons I shifted to a desktop based client :)

Vasu you might also have noted that after you type something in the search box and press enter, nothing happens !. You can have to "Click" on the Search button.

I second your opinion on Flyakite slowing down the PC. Even Flyakite also mentions in its documentation that the PC might slow down or take more resources after its installed. However you have to install it to see it.

I had issues while connecting to my desktop using remote connection;it was very slow.

iTunes stopped working after installing Flyakite and I am still trying to fix it !!

Yup camel case in Open resource is pretty useful. Quick access is gone to be the most used key. Now if you need to open any view or perpective, you don't need to use the mouse :)

I have 2 more questions for you
According to the instructions in the article, I changed the displaymanager xgl opts to this

DISPLAYMANAGER_XGL_OPTS="-accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:fbo"

It was pbuffer and I changed it to fbo. However when I open the Desktop effects tool, there was warning saying that this setting is not right for the card. When I updated it was reset back to pbuffer.

And XGL is fast with this mode ? Which mode have you set ?

Also SuseUpdater is asking me to update Compiz ?

Thanks a lot. XGL is now working !
I had seen that post and since NVidia was explicitly mentioned I didn't go ahead with the instructions of that post.

The problem was that compiz was not installed properly ! when i opened the gconf-editor, compiz was not under apps. I installed compiz again from the CD (Not from the software.opensuse.org) and this time it installed properly and the plugins were loaded properly.

Have you tried beryl ?

Yes the latest version does have lot of more goodies.
As far as I know, launchy is able to index any data on your local drive, hence even firefox bookmarks are indexed.

I see that many want to know as to which card is the best. The answer isn't that simple. Both Airtel and Reliance seem to be good, however the speed in either of these is not that good and is enough only for basic browsing needs.

Ashrut, as I have noticed the speed is very much dependent on the airtel coverage, where coverage is good, you should get good speeds.

Manish, thanks for shedding some light on Airtel vs Reliance. Your views should help many who are confused when they have to decide between Airtel and Reliance.

Chetan, I also noticed that the airtel data card customer service doesn't have the same quality as their mobile/broadband service. I had trouble configuring/using MMS with the data card and I was tossed like a ball between mobile and data card customer service.

Regarding your connectivity problem, you should check the airtel edge coverage. It shows as a tooltip when you hover around the mobility manager icon in the taskbar. It might be very low in the area where you stay.

Solvent, I am not sure if the data card bought from other places will work well with the service provider. The airtel data card does come with a mobility manager software which installs the drivers and also the software to manage the connections to internet sms handling etc.

But that said, there should be ways of making the externally bought data card work with the service provider. Probably somebody should try light on this :)

I have only used the Airtel data card and its decent enough. The price of the card keeps changing every other day. Better to contact customer service for these queries.

I guess it should work, but it beats me why you would want to do that. You could as well go for broadband connection.

You can go for data card if you want internet on the move and if you are not able to get a broadband connection.

Suresh, if you don't download much I would suggest Airtel. I have no idea of how the reliance service is !

For better connectivity you should have good signal coverage and in that respect airtel is very good.

However as another suresh has mentioned, reliance works on cdma and he is of the view that reliance has better speed.

You might also want to compare the prices of Reliance and Airtel Data card. they are coming down rapidly !

i have used airtel card from some time and one thing I observed is that if the signal(radio) strength is good, then you get much better speed

So compared to hutch and airtel, I would vote for airtel considering the fact that airtel's coverage is much much better than hutch.

Now Reliance works on CDMA and as some commenters have pointed out they have got much better speed than compared to airtel !

So Reliance seems to be a better choice !

As far as I know the mobility manager which comes with the card has drivers only for windows I guess. Without appropriate drivers you cannot expect the thing to work in Linux.

Even in the back of the airtel data card box they have mentioned 244kbps.. However in the website they have mentioned 100kbps !

As far as I know both reliance and datacard are offering the same package at almost similar rates !

One more thing I noticed is that if the airtel signal is very good, then browsing is much better :)

Yup I used that for quite some time, but for a change, I liked the IE Developer toolbar. (Also one of the few reason for opening IE :) ).

I went through your favorite list, Save as Image looks interesting

Yup I did run the test, few hours back. Did the stress test for 3 min (I was not sure how much time it was going to take, the website snapshot showed 40 min !!)

Also did a benchmark, it came out like this :

Vasu, Yeah Online reader is much convenient ! Also I checked up on the 2 missing things.
There is no option to set the interval, and the refresh option is there once you click on a feed, they should have a refresh icon next to each folder and feed.

Hopefully Google is reading this post and hopefully they will consider this.

I am not sure what happened when I was testing cooliris with firefox, It was not opening many of the links. (probably because I was using Firefox 2.0)

While writing the post, I thought I should mention about this notify feature as well. As it happens most of the time, I forgot about it :)

Notification of comments is a feature included by me on this site, and this feature can be incorporated by any blog running wordpress using the "Subscribe to comments" plugin (You can find the pluginhere

However unlike Notification, coComment tags to any web page having comments form. It automatically detects the form and attaches a toolbar below the comment text box. (You need to install the specific browser extension though)

And other than just notifying you of comments,you can TAG the comments and this makes searching comments/posts of your interest much faster.

Vasu, I didnt get the last line completely. As far as I know You can apply more than one label to a message. But all the archived mails go to one location i.e. All Mail, now there is no view combining both the labels I believe.. so you wouldnt be able to view archived mails of only lable1 and label2.

I even checked the search options, It again allows only to search only one label.
Even while creating a filter, it allows you to apply only one label. Probably we can suggest google to add the feature, again have to see how useful it will be..

(But I found that you can apply more than one label, using the above method, will test and probably write a post on it :) )

Prsonjeet, labels are logical folders in google, only thing is that very few people use it effectively. If you want to see all the mails without labels, best thing to do is Archive them

This removes it from Inbox, but they are still accessible via the specific labels and you can do this as a part of your filter also
When creating a filter, see that you apply a label and archive it (i.e skip inbox ! ) :)

I checked it, the ajaxfication makes the user interface pretty easy to use... liked it better than Bloglines, newsgator and google rss reader..

RSS Owl seems to suffice some of the requirements. You can import/export OPML files and yes you can categorize your feeds as well and there are keyboard shortcuts for important operations.

But still I am not happy with the UI, I am not able to place the reading pane the way I want, which is pretty annoying.

Feedemon is pretty good and probably the reason why its also not free :(

Features is not always required by eclipse plugin contract as far as I know. I haven't tried this approach with 3.4.

Are you seeing the functionality of the removed plugins? Thats surprising. In any case you can do eclipse -clean This re builds the plugin cache and you should be set.

Apologies for the late reply. Regarding JSEclipse even Kevin also had a similar trouble.
So I went ahead and tried installing JSEclipse using Links. When I fired up eclipse, saw a message in the Error log saying "could not find feature.xml".
I am out of touch with eclipse from some time, but for some reason, eclipse could not find the feature.xml which was in the archive (feature jar file). I extracted the contents and deleted the archive and restarted eclipse, seemed to work fine !

Try it and let me know if it worked for you.

Even if you move the entire eclipse directory, there is nothing to be done since the links point to the same external directories. Note that you should ideally keep the extension folders out of Eclipse directory !

If you do rename or move the link folders themselves, as you have pointed out you need to update the string.

Jim, with eclipse 3.2 and above, you don't need to extract the JAR file.

You should copy or extract to the following path
c:\tpplugins\aaa\eclipse\plugins.

you seem to be extracting at c:\tpplugins\aaa which is wrong.

The license page in the update wizard pops up for every plugin installed via the update mechanism.

To test out, I downloaded the Subclipse plugin from this URL:

extracted the contents and copied it to a folder structure like this.

I also created a "link" file pointing to the Subclipse folder path=D:/europa/subclipse and I was all set. I could configure settings via the SVN preference page and also switch to the SVN perspective.

As mentioned in the post, one thing to note is the folder hierarchy. For E.g. If you have forgot to create a "eclipse" folder inside "Subclipse", the plugin would never load.

I do remember that RAD has a distinct folder which has the base Eclipse SDK. However I wouldn't recommend changing that, since the plugin's based on Eclipse 3.2 might no longer work with 3.3 (If there are API changes)

The Tail Plugin is very old and was last updated on Nov 18 2003. Probably the plugin api no longer works with Eclipse 3.2.2. When you start Eclipse, have a look at the "Error Log" view. The view shows details on plug-in load failures.

Kevin, I tried to test it out, but seems like its acquired by Adobe and requires some login to download.

Anway, the only way to find out whether the plugin is loaded is via the "Error Log" view. It will report if the plugin failed to load and also the reason
(like some API mismtach or dependent plugin missing etc)

I have loaded lots of plugins using this approach and none have failed. Even if they have, its because of my mistake in not conforming to the folder layout.

The .link file should point to a directory which has eclipse directory and this eclipse directory should have plugins and features folder.

Some of the places where you might make a mistake
1. Path name given in the link file (Also note that the path should have forward slash /)
2. Directory structure not in proper format

If both of these are fine, then your plugin might not be loading because of some missing dependent plugins. Start eclipse with a -clean option and check Error Log View in Eclipse. You should find logs if any plugin is not loaded properly.

I don't completely agree on the first point, its not mandatory for a file name to have version.

Second point regarding keeping the link files in the thirdparty folder is a nice idea :)

And .link file name can be ANYTHING .. as I have mentioned in the post, it can be any valid file name and it doesn't need to match the name of any plugin folder

Hornburg, yes it might be faster by adding extension location. But if the scenario is working between multiple versions of eclipse and multiple versions of plugin, then u can easily move around the plugins.

If you are doing it one time, I guess the "add extension location" makes more sense.

Qumana was the only other editor that I liked very much. Other than the image handling, the UI was sluggish (probably because of Java, I'm not sure) and many a times it used to go to a hang state and I had to use Task manager to kill the process. (Again this didn't happen very often). I would definitely checkout the new version :)

Gmail UI - Yes its much better than yahoo. You might not have the options to change themes etc, but here is what I like in Gmail (again this is not biased and from a developer perspective)

1. Loading is amazingly fast
2. Love the powerful keyboard features
3. Concept of labels is an innovation. Everybody was thinking of organizing mails into nested folders (where people generally get lost).But Gmail bought a totally new concept. As you might be knowing Labels are again logical folders
Also with the powerful search feature, I no longer need to have a nested folder structure as I have in Outlook client.
4. Though I miss the drag and drop, i generally label the mails (if i have not created a filter/rule) and press a keyboard shortcut to archive. The mail is nicely moved from inbox :)
5. I love the undo feature
6. Spam filter is one of the best I have seen. Others have improved only recently

I am sure if you do a unbiased usage of both gmail and yahoo, you would begin appreciating the features in gmail. Geeks going behind gmail is also a testimonial of features in Gmail.

And again you will know this, Yahoo mail had a drastic change only after Gmail came in. Or I should put it this way - Gmail made Yahoo change itself (but again yahoo didn't innovate much during this change)

Yeah there are lot of bugs and the algo for summary information needs to be improved.Now it gets the data from the HTML and displays it. So it doesnt work well when the HTML has frames !!

1.wordpress folder should be in the htdocs folder of xampp
2.check that apache and mysql service are running
3. I checked again the text that you replaced, I guess its wrong.

In my case, I replaced my web url
http://www.venukb.com/blog
with
http://localhost/wordpress

I am not sure how you ended with /home/myusername/public_html/mysitename/wp-content

I guess wp-content shouldn't be there at the end.

Nick, assuming that you have replaced your weblog URL with http://localhost/wordpress, you have to finally do one more thing:

Go to options page and select permalinks. Choose the permalinks option that you had set in your blog. Even if its set properly, do "update permalink structure". Open the site again and you should be all set

The cons are also mentioned in the post. Probably you over looked. checked your post, its pretty detailed.

Milk, yup firefox uses gecko and even the Minefiled version is going to continue using that I believe.

One reason for opera not getting well with users was the use of ads in the browser. I guess they stopped it after version 7.5 or so and after that they have been able to get more users.

Firefox on the other hand has gained lot of popularity because of its extension architecture. Any feature which is missing can be overcome by an extension. And there is a big community supporting/writing plugins.

And google has adopted firefox in a big way. Google even has snapped some of the lead developers of Firefox

Yup the point is how was I able to successfully login and why was my status shown as "Available". So whoever logs in is "Available" only to themselves and not their buddies.

Anway in presence you have lot of such scenarios and google guys definitely didn't consider the scenario of Gmail service being down. Also this was the first time I saw Gmail down :)

I have not used the USB modem, check with airtel if they have drivers for Vista. Something should have been released by Airtel.

If you want to use your SE phone, sign up from Airtel Mobile Office service, they have various rate plans starting from 300 rs I guess. You can connect the phone to your com port and start using it as a modem for your internet connection.

Without Edge there is no internet, the 2G network is the data network and as you can see from tons of comments on this post, the speed ain't so good.

Waiting for 3G adoption in India :)

Looks like I have got company :) I also broke the antenna; its so badly designed and the laptop bags are not designed to accommodate these extra things and while keeping the notebook inside the bag, I also managed to break it.

However I was able to put in back and I have not seen any change in the functionality, its working fine, I guess that thing was used to get better connectivity in low signal areas.

Mohan, yeah I have heard of Opera a lot. Other than Firefox and IE, do give Safari also a try. I love the way it renders pages (but its still buggy and crashes every other time :) )

Regarding site, even I noticed the change. Looks like my host Dreamhost fixed something !!

yeah i had even read your blog on opera.. and today I decided to check if there is any benchmark to decide which is the fastest browser. I landed on this link

You might be happy to see that he found opera as the best browser!!! I am definitely going to check it out.

But on features side.. I guess firefox has some goodies like plugins which make the browser more powerful.. I am not sure if opera also has plugin support..

I am not sure why people don't use opera.. even when I check my site statistics I see people using only IE or Firefox.. I guess the GetFireFox campaign has worked well for Firefox... I think someone should start Get opera !!

Thanks Raminder for keeping a tab on my site. Most of the hosting that you go for comes with atleast 5GB space which is more than enough.

My intial hosting with Godaddy costed around 3$/month which isn't too expensive. Checkout Bluehost also along with Godaddy.

One of the other things you need to do is setup wordpress blog in your local machine

Whenever I shift to a new theme, i backup my blog, restore the contents on my local blog and start working on the new theme. Once everything is in place, all you need to do is upload and activate the theme :)

Regarding point 1, I am not sure why you ask to copy the sidebar contents, it will anyway be there in the sidebar.php of the old theme !

Agree on all the other points :)

Cool.. I would definitely recommend canon for anyone wishing to buy a digital camera :)

Sansa does seem to have the goodies, but you would finally end up using 1 or 2 features and finally one feature i.e. listening music (I think thats what you also mentioned :) )

iPod does come at a price but it also has all the goodies built in.. good quality sound and good battery life

The layout looks cool including the header.

But the color(its kind of very bright) and font in the post is too small (on a 1600*1200) resolution.Not sure If I am the only one with this opinion :)

Not used Zoomr but recently signedup for Flickr Pro. It is indeed the best photo sharing portal in my view.
I am not sure you can store the original image on Yahoo photos.

Flickr has everything you need, I also had a similar view like you until I explored all the feature of Flickr :)

One of the ways to view it, is that if you use pirated software, it "might" affect the company's revenues which might affect compensation of employees and these employees migh be working out of india !!! So it affects india.. (and might be other countries as well)

Another way to see it is, if company wants cut down on expenses,they come down to india, same work is done (with good quality) at 1/10th of the cost. Benefit to india !!

I am sure few people are going to say "crap" after reading this, just a thought came to my mind after reading the other comments in the thread and I just jotted it down..

P.S Anyway I am against the use of pirated software and if you don't want to pay, search for the alternative in Open source :)

I was using the Beta version of IE7 and I also observed the same thing,IE7 is damn slow, even when I create a new tab, it acts as thought I made a big mistake !

IE7 is supposed to be faster..however I felt that IE6 was much better (on the speed front) !

I for one like simplistic themes and if you ask me the current theme looks much better than the blog that you just linked: blognation.

You could probably change the font,it would make a difference to the current theme.

Orkut !! I am not sure if Google is every going to pay much attention to this app.
Google as I have seen pays the least attention to orkut, there is no official blog on Orkut.

We rarely see updates (last one was GTalk integration/Video sharing I believe).

Sometimes I wonder if the lawsuit on Orkut itself is holding back Google on doing anything on this social networking site !

Ah.. looks nice. but i would definitely recommend to adopt a 3 column theme now itself. I am now cramped for space on the single sidebar.

But I didn't like the header. The font of the text is kind of weird and so are the icons stacked on the left. Both these almost occupy the entire header space :)

The positioning of the third sidebar should be your preference. Both would look fine :).

I just couldn't stop laughing for some time after seeing you comment on the header.. haha.. No need to shoot yourself. It isn't that bad.

Only that the text and image stack project out of the header image border/Also they kind of occupy almost 100% of the header.

Wow this is like a complete makeover at least on my widescreen display. The layout looks perfect and so is the font. If I have to suggest anything, it would be on the font size. It just makes the big posts look more big (especially the font size of the comments)

Nice tool; But I am wondering why the post is titled "Backup your flickr photos", one of the reasons I bought Flickr account was to backup all my photos to an online service !

But for downloading the photos in one shot, the tool will definitely come in handy.
