Saw your post in that group :)
I would definitely say you're better off. At least if you can design the idea, you've got a prototype so you're way ahead of any non-coder. Having something presentable in a testable form beats out having the idea any day.
I'd volunteer to help but at the moment I've already got a lot of projects going on. Drop me a line, though, and I'll see if I can't find someone to help :)

in Idea creep on Third Rail
I hear you on this one.
I often find myself unintentionally being overloaded with too many projects because other ideas pop up and I want to take advantage of them. At one point I was doing game design for 2 teams while working designing a website and developing a social app. My problem with that is not that I don't have enough time- which I don't- but that I lose the intensity of my focus.

in Why Google Is Making Us Dumber on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
I'd have to go with no.
Google is a fantastic reference.
Lawyers don't memorize all the laws. They have books to reference. Accountants don't memorize every formula, etc. they keep reference books so they can look it up when they need to, Google is used in the same manner. Most things we use Google to do in a reference sense are things we've already had experience with. If anything, Google allows us to be more productive by allowing us to focus more specifically on the task at hand.

With Facebook now having a more open API, I wonder about the possibility of linking it with ones facebook account. Have events you're attending or invited to automatically added to the calendar. If you mention someones name, if it could pull it from one of your photo album's that would definitely be neat, etc.
Your idea of being able to important the class/professor data is also a great idea.

in Searching "the Google" for memes on Scobleizer
I used "The Google" to define "I'd hit it." Apparently those of us on the interweb stole it from McDonald's.
"shens" is a nice, relatively fresh meme.
qft and ofn are some nice ones too, though more forums specific.
I found this post amusing.

in Revisiting the definition of “community” on Community Guy
I'd say your definition of community is very close to my own unspoken definition of community. While yours sings true to my un-spoken definition, my spoken would have a single modification. That is the word "authentic" before "relationships over time."
One thing I'd fear about companies who begin to get onto the 'community bandwagon' would be their desire for the quick results giving the whole idea of community a bad name through a lack of authenticity.

Sorry about the late response (I need to subscribe to your comment feed).
Good point on the use case.
In the case of your mother, though, I'd wonder if she'd read her friends blogs (if they had them, perhaps they do?). I could see Vox being of great use in that case.
Vox is an interesting idea in and of itself, though. Restricting who can access your blog. I can see various opportunities in that.
The other thing I notice is the new connotation of "addictive."

All right. I apologize as this is immature (really, i'm sorry) and unrelated, but your fortune was just too good.
Have to play the fortune cookie game. Add "in bed" to the end of your fortune.

That's great that you brought your mom into blogging. I guess it will take an active blogging community to bring more people in.
I found it interesting, though, that your mom said that she still hadn't been reading more blogs even though she had now begun to be a blogger herself. It makes me wonder what the usual process is. I'd assume blog reader to blogger (as that's what happened with me), but it sounds like there could be a more prominent variation.
