in 2009/01/07/is-wallstrip%e2%80%99s-cancellation-an-omen-for-original-online-video/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
I don't think it's an omen. Online video viewership continues to soar.
If a CBS broadcast drama or sitcom was canceled, we wouldn't say the entire
channel is in jeopardy.
WallStrip probably could have succeeded in the hands of another owner, or
if it had remained independent.

in Has/How/Why tech blogging has failed you on Scobleizer
If you do this edifying thing you're talking about, I would be more inclined to read your blog. Or anyone else doing the same thing.
Blogging could (should?) be the antidote to competitive journalism, which in this fast-paced society doesn't take the time to check facts or at least provide a story in its true context.
Some content labeled as blogs is simply digital so-called journalism.
It's not that reporting news is in and of itself is bad. I do this for a living. But the competitiveness and the nastiness is what I don't like.

Pinky, the Democrats have been the primary ones crying Recession. In fact, they bring a ton of fear-based politics.

in Flip Video…Only Mistake is Not Buying one Earlier on Howard Lindzon
Just gave one to my son for his birthday. My daughter is getting one for hers.
I plan on getting one but I keep hoping for a sale at Walmart. I got my son's 30 min. one for just $79 during a weekend sale.

in Bear Stearns a Lesson in Rumor Monitoring on Marketing Pilgrim
I'm willing to be convinced, but I'd rather see hard numbers. For me, going from 0% to 0.08% is not a real spike. It reminds me of charts that people like to use in showing how much foreclosures on subprimes have increased.
Yes, you can make it look like a spike, but when you compare it to mortgages that are being paid, it's a foothill, not Mount Everest.
I think a lot of market moves are exaggerated. The Fed shouldn't have bailed BS out. And BS shouldn't have been downgraded as much as it was.

in Bear Stearns a Lesson in Rumor Monitoring on Marketing Pilgrim
Bear Stearns hosted a conference in Florida last week, so I think that's why you see an increase in conversations about the company leading up to the fall.
BS's problems had to do with their business actions (the risky way they were buying up loans), and I don't think there's much they could do to stop the trainwreck.

in Apple Is a Mean, Hot, Devil-Woman on A New Marketing
This is so true!
But I think that Apple will remain popular as long as Microsoft is limited and, well, blah. That sounds negative, like we're choosing the worst of two evils.
But where we really need to trend is diversification. I like iPod for a digital music player, but i also like Dell and Vista, for example.

in We’re All Wrong on A New Marketing
I think you bring up some great points.
The good thing is, especially since the internet and new media enable global marketplaces, that there are enough people to go around, so to speak.
Companies need to focus on equipping their brand evangelists, so that they can be influencers with their circle of friends.
LinkedIn does a beautiful job of showing people how connected they really are, without having to know a ton of people.
Most things in life work best within some sort of hierarchy, and new media is no exception.
Fantastic post!

in How-To Guarantee a Nightmare Filled Sleep on Instigator Blog
The other night I had a nightmare, but it was related to watching 'Chuck' on NBC. Chuck's sister was poisoned, and I dreamt that I was poisoned. I started to convulse and scream and then I woke up.
My kitten was fast asleep on my chest. Not sure if that had anything to do with it.

in Why Metrics Are Irrelevant on A New Marketing
You can measure ROI through traditional media and many companies do. One way is to put different telephone numbers on ads. The broadcast or publication that the ad is placed in should be able to give you pretty good numbers on how many people saw the ad.
However, much of traditional media is for branding purposes.
I dare say that at times, conversation marketing via social media is the measurement not the marketing. Ok, I gotta go write a piece about that.

in Read This Book, Fix Your Message on A New Marketing
Thanks for blogging about this. I learned about this book about 6 months ago. I think it was written about as part of an Inc. Magazine article. If I remember correctly, these authors point out that even when writing to a technical audience like an IT department, you should still use creative writing - b/c many tech people think of themselves as creative.
Anyway, I still haven't read the book, though, so this was a good reminder :)

That's a great idea. Authors or publishers could use this to drive readers to their websites, where they could upsell the customer.
InStyle magazine does have a tear-out bookmark with each issue. It's pretty handy.

in GoDaddy claims trademark infringement for Go-Daddy domain purchased from GoDaddy on The Marketing Technology Blog
I don't know of any lawyers, but I know of two blogs who might be interested in the story
Techdirt.com
DomainNameNews.com
They might know of some legal dudes to help.
(I didn't know all of this stuff about GoDaddy - that's where I've been buying all my domains!!! Grrr )

I'll have to agree with Cam here. This is definitely selective editing. Kind of like the media does when they cover, um, anything.

I totally agree! I'd rather have limited success with moderate profit than big success and risk being pushed out (like the founder of Friendster).

It's definitely not a sin to be wealthy. But I understand your struggle. When I was in college, I went on a mission trip to India where we worked with orphans and lepers (yes, they still exist). I struggled for months upon coming home with how people spend $$ on "stupid" things.
Then I took a job at a Hallmark store during Christmas break because I needed $ for books the next semester. During that time, I realized that even though things like Swarovski crystal don't have any eternal value - it still gave people jobs.
Nice pens may be extravagant - but there's a pen maker who's family is happy he has a job.
I think the key is - whether you have wealth or you don't - who do you put your trust in? And how does that reflect on how you spend your money?
As for the comments you made about humor - I've been haphazardly reading The Humor of Christ. And it's such a different look at the New Testament. But it talks about - and i'm going to butcher this - how humor can be used to address the human condition - as long as we're willing to laugh at ourselves.
Anyway, thanks for a refreshingly different post!
