nej, men den här videon är fake, jag hörde det på en dokumentär på radion igår morse. Det är tydligen någon kines som heter Fai King som har varit med och arbetat fram manuset. Han skulle tydligen ha en labrador med klövar istället för tassar, men tro att det av fake med.

Sorry, I'm a fan of the blog, but I think this post needs a rewrite :)

Aside from disagreeing with both the premise (culture is in decline) and the conclusion (football is in decline) - I don't think it makes its point very convincingly.

The conclusion is stated at the end, but until I read that next to last paragraph, I had no idea which side of the issue the post fell on. Paragraphs (2,4,7) raise questions about the conclusion, but the questions are ignored rather then refuted. Paragraph 3 is almost a non-sequitur, stating that comparisons between artists from different times are difficult, then making a point about Amy Winehouse.

I have to agree with the first comment.

I'd add that we, the fans, are as much at fault as anyone. We pay a lot of money to see our team WIN. There is fan loyalty, but any look at the comparative income of teams (in any sport) would be enough to see that teams that win, make the most money.

That drive to win trumps loyalty and it becomes a matter of economics. While loyalty would be nice, you can't really fault players for looking after their own interests.

It's easy to forget that Arsenal was at the top of the table for a large part of last season.

I always enjoy Kartik's articles. They're like listing to the drunk guy next to you at a bar while you watch a game. 90% nonsense, but if you focus, you can normally figure out what he's getting at. :)

I think the central points being made are 1) English players aren't getting enough playing time in the Premier League to develop and 2) that England needs to invest in a national training academy. I think they are both good points.

The rest of the article is a mix of nonsense and unsubstantiated assertions. Some personal highlights:
+ "Americans prefer team sports they can dominate or manipulate the rules to their advantage."
(...or, because of its historic geographic isolation, America developed its own unique set of team sports, that remain its most popular)

+ "Moreover in the rugged individualistic culture that is Americana, Tiger Woods is hailed as a national hero while our footballers are anonymous to most."
(...or, Tiger Woods is hailed as a hero because he is, possibly, the best player of all time in a popular sport, compared to American footballers who are above-average in a locally-not-very-popular sport. See Michael Jordan for a counter example)

+"United States who has never accomplished in any internationally competitive team sport what England did".
(...if you selectively choose only internally competitive team sports we haven't accomplished anything in - i.e. soccer, cricket, rugby. I think the point is really that we haven't won the World Cup - and that's the only internationally competitive team sports competition that most people care about)

+ "In addition today’s footballer is mentally weaker than those of the 1966 England team"
(...if you generalize the thousands of footballers, none of whom you've met, into a single caricature)

And my personal favorite, from the subsequent comments:
"They produce real sportsman who understand self sacrifice. Going through what England went through in World War II gives the Anglos a perspective we Americans will never have."

Afraid of the slippery slope? Why is there all this hysteria about Ref. I? If people really want to protect their family, they should go home and (pardon the pun) focus on their family. that may be true, but people pay less when they are sure that it wont create wealth for them, than when they are certain that it will create wealth for them. the premium over renting should be reasonable...maybe 10 - 20%, at least for non-trophy family places like the tree section (not huge sand or hill estates)? the premium at the peak was probably over 100%, and its still probably close to 50%. once that comes down the market will clear, not before.

here are some #s to throw out for 2010. these are for turnkey, newer (1995+ and updated) places that are around 3200 square feet. the size a young family would want: trees = 1.2m sand = 1.9m hills = 1.8m i dont think that actually gives us a tremendous amount further to fall from the lowest recent sales. the median, yes. but look at 1.5m being the low water mark for a new trees house and we arent all that far away. all these homes that just popped up on redfin last week looking for 2.1m+ are delusional. thats their prerogative, however. when the stock market drops into the 600s or lower, and people are looking at their investment portfolios down 75%, nobody is going to be snapping up 2m homes because someone cut the price by 25k. the cuts will have to be meaningful, like 100k, to catch anyone's eye.

ahem, just a quick lesson for all the realtors out there: - 3.6% cut is a very small price reduction - 25% cut in 15 days is the s&p 500 just to give you a relative sense of whats happening out there. s&p will be in the 500s, and MB homes will be priced 25k off. not interesting to anyone.

as we plumb the depths of s&p 700, one has to scratch their head and wonder who would buy these places? it seems like aggressively priced places are going, others are sitting. lots of new builds way back in the trees at 2.1 or 2.2 that are getting nary a sniff. contrast that with the failed auction house at 1.5 and some others between 1.5 and 2. there is going to be a race to see who can grab the dwindling number of buyers...the winners get deals done, the rest wait through another year.

Both have an overly optimistic price (even for 2006) and both realtors are doing a terrible job marketing the homes. As I mentioned in the previous “1800 the strand” post, the photos look like they were taken with a cell phone camera and there is no virtual tour. This is completely unacceptable on a house at this price point. Honestly if a 10 mil commission doesn’t motivate you to hire a professional photographer and get a virtual tour you shouldn’t be a realtor? Hopefully 3516 will get some more conceptual photos up and perhaps a floorplan.

Those 30% drops are interesting. I will be following the strand homes to see what happens to them in the future and how the coming credit card defaults will impact the banking and housing industry. As a side note I always kind of liked 3404. I know it’s dated but its kind of funky and I thought someone with the right vision could update it to be a top notch place. I hope it’s not a tear down for another cliché Mediterranean style home.

Koolhaas designs buildings that are unfriendly to people and ugly as hell (at least to normal people, for some unclear reason other architects seem to like them). This means they will probably be demolished very quickly, which is not very sustainable.

@anonymous: There are definitely real problems with high salt concentrations coming out of desalination plants. It's not fresh water that's the problem, though any large scale change to an ecosystem could upset an ecosystem.

Desalination plants don't expel fresh water, they expel extremely salty water, and life in general has a hard time dealing with water that is saltier than oceans, just because life hasn't had a lot of exposure to water that is saltier than the oceans. Not, at least, on this planet.

Yeah, we have markless intersections here in Montana too. I was really quite confused by them at first but they're actually very safe. Like you said, you're just more cautious.

Yield signs, it turns out, are much more dangerous. They give the driver a sense of security "oh, I have the right of way, I can go" and then there's no reason to even look and see if anyone's coming.

Result: *Wham*

Unsafe for bikers, unsafe for pedestrians, unsafe for bikers.

As for the traffic lights, I just liked this picture because they were out of use / laying on the concrete in a warehouse, not actually up in the streets. Of course, I hadn't considered how different traffic lights look in different parts of the world, though...it's obvious to me now that you mention it.

I've got to come to this guy's defense here. His job isn't to Represent America. His job is to Represent Detroit. It's not the automakers giving him money that matters, it's the fact that his district lives and breaths auto manufacturing.

His district lives on those companies, probably a healthy percent of people who vote for him work for those companies. He's representing them, that's his job.

It should also be noted that he's a pretty good guy and has submitted a bill for for a national health insurance plan every Congress since 1955.

A couple of comments. First, most houses (where I am at least) use natural gas for heat anyway. Trust me, we're feeling the pinch as prices rise, but this is certainly a more efficient use of natural gas than a centralized power plant.

And sorry for the confusion relating to the Power Gen system that we blogged about a while back. Both are Micro-CHPs, but these run on internal combustion as opposed to a sterling engine, so they're more expensive, and use more gas, but produce two or three times more power.

I hadn't read that story when I wrote this one, thanks for pointing it out.

As for changing the US ecosystem, any time you fly over the middle of the country, it's pretty obvious that that's already been done.

Agreed that the tractor is misleading, and I apologize for the use of the word Rangeland, which here in Montana, means semi-arid land that isn't any good for crops. And no, there are never tractors on rangeland...though I imagine some kind of machinery would be harvesting the switchgrass.

We're still waiting on instant booting, though it's been promised for years. The most recent advances are pretty promising and come in the form of solid state boot drives. Solid state drives (which use flash memory) can operate much more quickly because they have no moving parts. Also, they're much more efficient. I've written a lot about them at EcoGeek. The first flash boot drives are already coming out in notebooks, and should be pretty much everywhere in the next 2 years.

They're going to save us a lot of energy even without the added impetus to shut down.

So output on the DC site is 15 W (5.6V* 2.68A). If the input on the AC site is indeed 50 W (100V*0.5A) or even 120 W (240V*0.5A) W. This would mean that the AC/DC converter and transformer is extremely inefficient.

If this is true this gadget is not so green.

Maybe the TH editors can contact Philips to clear this issue.

If you read the full article it states:
"For example, $2.40 is tacked onto the cost of each new automobile tire bought in Illinois, and put into a fund that helps the state collect and dispose of old tires".
This fee use to be $1.00, then it was increased to $2.00 now it is $2.40. The money is supposed to assist in finding markets for recycled tires, cleaning up existing tire piles, etc. Blago has raided this fund and it goes to fund his programs. Thank him next time you buy new tires and have to pay an extra $10.00.

I continue to use the tire fee as an example since it was used in the article. This fee and the program that is supported by it should be abolished once the scrap tire problem has been solved. Don't reappropriate for unrelated programs. That, Lovie, would be good effecient honest government.

I used to work in the tire business. At that time, there was a $1.00 fee on every new tire sold in Illinois to fund tire cleanups and markets for scrap tires. It was a special fund designated for a specific purpose. The ISTDA supported it at the time and the program was a success. Now, Blago has doubled the fee for general revenue. Another good program gone bad because of government greed.

In all honesty it is hard to blame in agency director for not being a good or qualified director under Blago. Joel Brunsvold was a good person and capable of being a great director. The truth is OMB managed the budget, intergovernmental handled the personnel, communications at CMS handled the press, Quinlan handled the legal, what is left for a director to work with? They didn't even have input into the budget.

Bilandic was not liked and did not have the grip on the city like Daley does. Bilandic was also lied to about snow removal efforts by his ward bosses who also hated him so every night he was on TV telling people that the media was making up stories. I remember coming home after a 2 to 3 hour trip each night and seeing his dour puss on the news telling me that I had imagined the crawl home. I wanted to reach through the TV but used the ballot instead. Daley will be punished for his arrogance in the next election but the punishment will be that he only receives 70% of the vote instead of his normal 80% of the 30% of registered voters who even bother to vote. Chicago voters are scared to death about the unknown without Daley. The common refrain is always "Chicago will be another Detroit" I no longer live in Chicago but work there and live close enough to be affected by his majesty's whims.

Before we get all warm and fuzzy, remember the aldermen now want to review what they originally rubberstamped in the first place. It's all a game. An alderman is probably selected to be the "opposition" every few weeks to give the impression that they are not spineless clones. Nothing happens after the press release. Residents of any ward who had an alderman who actually stood up to Daley would suffer greatly by a reduction of city services and the Alderman would be out next election

I have in laws buried there (or at least supposed to be) and was able to keep relatives from running out there as it was nothing but a media/politicians circus before they closed it down. Anyone who thinks that the four mopes currently under arrest are the only ones involved are sadly mistaken. Problems have been going on for years. I'm not surprised at the lack of action by the GA as I believe Funeral Directors as well as some local authorities have had a hand in this. Some well known names/organizations may be made public. I would expect once the media gets tired of interviewing grieving relatives and the breathless reports about whether Michele Obama's father is or isn't there, things will quietly go away. Too bad about Michele Smith or Michele Jones whose relatives did wind up in the bone pile. Looks to be more Black on Black crime. Does anyome really care once the cameras are off?
As others have said, enforce the current laws. New regs are just more grandstanding and will only hurt the many well run cemeteries

I see Davis as a stalking horse but with a strong enough political shadow that Brown and then Preckwinkle drop out.
