in Increasing Diversity in the Sciences on YBPGuide
YBP has interviewed a few engineers who have decided against pursuing a higher ed STEM degree. You could start by asking them why.

in Talk to ME, Hollywood!? on YBPGuide
It is really sad, I didn't hear about Pride until it came out on DVD and it was very well produced too!
I was so excited about Talk To Me and last night when I went to the movies, just like you said, it wasn't being shown in ANY of my local movie theatres.
Is there anything we can do, sign a petition or something?

in black blog under assault by resident evil fanboys on YBPGuide
@ Seth the reason why blacklooks and other African bloggers don't take as kindly to this as Spanish bloggers is because it is perpetuating a stereotype about Africa being the dark continent.
When Tears of the Sun with Bruce Willis came out, I remember a campaign by Nigerians to boycott the movie because of the painful stereotypical inaccuracies being portrayed in the film. I remember complaints about the movie, Interpreter with Nicole Kidman and even the Constant Gardener. My point is you probably did not hear about these complaints because the movies and Africans' perceptions of them weren't that important to you.
As a gamer, you obviously are aware of our complaints because gaming is of interest to you.

oh and I also want to point out that in my opinion, I do not think we as humans should use the Bible as justification for 'ostracising' people. If Jesus did not throw stones at Mary Magdalene, why should we?

umm GIB and ? interesting convo.
I just want to point out that the Bible does talk about homosexuality.
1 Corinthians 6:9 (New International Version)
Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders
...carry on y'all :)

What is the return on pursuing an advanced degree in a STEM field these days? I can be an investment banker and earn more than double what an engineering Ph.D would earn annually?
And you have to contend with 'plantation tax', 'glass ceilings' and everything else. Here's an interesting story I listened to on NPR about a black Professor's struggle with MIT.

in Born in the USA … A as in Africa on YBPGuide
Most African countries have at least 3 distinct ethnic groups each. I know for certain Nigeria has over 200, Ghana has over 60 ethnic groups. Basically what I'm saying is 3 is a major understatement on the number of ethnic groups from each African country.
The main problem with most African countries today is ethnic divsion. So why would these African leaders want to merge into one big government umbrella? If we can't manage the little pools of mess that are currently brewing in each country how can they manage thousands of ethnic divisions?
I honestly think that the African leaders who support this idea just want to have a bigger pool of African money to steal from.

in Why do people hate on Tyler Perry? on YBPGuide
@Big Man Films, one of the messages I get from Perry's plays, especially with reference to your comment, is that black women be more open to getting into relationships with blue collar men. And also as the saying goes... all that glitters is not gold.

in Integrating Success and Opportunity on YBPGuide
It really is a catch-22 situation. If he opposes integration so much. He should give back to the community so that others coming after him don't have to suffer the drawbacks of coming from a 'sub-par' academic background.
And this should apply to everyone. Professional societies like NABJ, NSBE, BMBA should really ramp up efforts to give back. I listened to an interview a while ago about a group in California who selected a relatively small group of grade school kids and have basically tutored and mentored them and will do so up to and long after college/law school.
It's not so much as granting scholarships and creating after school programs for a few hundred or even thousand kids, but follow-up/ mentoring which is where people drop the ball.
So my suggestion would be to follow that group's model, work with a few kids from grade-school all the way up to professional level and it will create a domino effect because these same kids will mentor younger kids while they are in college and so forth.

I still don't get how not paying your bills-rent, utilities affect your credit score. You're not paying back 'borrowed money' cos that's what credit is.

Thanks for adding me to your friend's list on last.fm :)
I have an Electrical Engineering degree and interned at Procter and Gamble. I loved (absolutely loved) what I was doing my last summer and they required that I get a Masters degree to continue.
I balked at it, not lightly, for three reasons:
1.) I always had this desire to own my own business. This may be something ingrained in us from our culture and the implicit encouragement to 'be your own person' and 'excel more than others think is possible'. I felt that staying in school for another year would hamper this.
2.) I had an offer on the table from another company and simply was tired of school. Engineering was hard and I wanted a break.
3.) I wasn't sure if having a graduate degree would allow me to be flexible within the market for the future. I thought if I had this stack of degrees on my resumé and eventually decide to NOT be in engineering, I'd be pigeonholed.
