There is a discipline of process that must be worked through with board drafting that is lost in today's world of 3D CAD. When the undo button is a Staedtler Mars Plastic eraser, an eraser shield and a lot of time, you develop some good habits pretty quickly. The fundamental Drafting Practices and Descriptive Geometry haven't changed just because it is 3D CAD. As much as I wouldn’t want to go back to board drafting, there is a lot of pride in knowing one can start with an empty 20 or 30 foot piece of mylar and lay a design out on it that was as perfect as it could be and a real work of art.

Cheers,

Anna

Re: When Are You Upgrading to SolidWorks 2008?

Josh,

We will update towards the end of the year. We use our native SolidWorks data downstream in our production areas. I need to co-ordinate the SolidWorks 2008 rollout with the upgrade to CAMWorks 2008 and Esprit 2008.

I will actually rollout SW08 to our manufacturing areas before we upgrade Engineering. We want our production folks to always be able to read the SW data native and not get into saving them step/iges translations.

This year with the new UI I will most likely do a training session on the SW08 UI for our users. I really like the new UI, but it will be a shock to our users. Not all of them easily adapt to change... :-)

Cheers,

Anna

Re: SolidWorks Tips for Simple Composite Parts

Everyone doing any kind of design should spend time with their manufacturing folks when they can. Ohh.... the things you learn and the good will you can gain by listening to your manufacturing folks and helping them, where you can, to make their job easier.

Cheers,

Anna

Re: 16 Solutions to Manage Projects and Get Organized Online

Josh,

Great list of sites to check out. I have not heard of most of them. I would be interested in seeing what you come up with for a benchmark. The more different types of stress tests for our hardware and SolidWorks the better.

I would be happy to host it when yo get to that point.

Cheers,

Anna

Re: 16 SolidWorks Tips to Make the ‘S’ Key Work For You

Great post Josh....

The S-key Short Cut Toolbar is a big mouse mile saver for me. I am so used to hitting the S key, that I try to use it when I am working on legacy drawings in AutoCAD 2000.

This is a great UI improvement that SolidWorks has implemented.

Cheers,

Anna

Re: Extrude. Do It! Go with an open mind, willing to learn from the folks that manufacture parts for a living. They have much to teach you.

You will create an immense amount of good will with the shop personal if you listen and learn from them.

Cheers,

Anna

Re: Yes You Can! Would have never thought to use SolidWorks for Graphic Design. You download and run a SolidWorks macro which creates the model on the fly. I think you will see more of this as I suspect the small size of the macro file offers many advantages over the native models.

Re: Gabi Jack’s Blog has a new location!

Gabi,

Tha new website looks great!
