What a great post. I couldn't agree more. I think it's time we start calling this pseudo-conservatism (neo-conservativism) out.

Phil -

Very insightful post. We see eye to eye on a LOT of things.

You should take a serious look at Chuck Baldwin, the Constitution Party candidate --especially since you live in a state where voting your conscience is very unlikely to change the actual outcome of the election.

I think Chuck Baldwin is the most solid conservative on the ballot. I'm giving him my "protest' vote, and I hope other concerned conservatives will as well.

Check him out:

@ Michael B. That's a pretty bad litmus test. Would you pay a lot of money for something that didn't benefit you? Only when the government makes you. :)

Sure, there are some people that make way too much much money, but the market already punishes that. It also punishes companies that pay employees way too little.

Point: the free market is the best regulator there has ever been or ever will be, and frankly, government is among the worst. If you want scarce resources (including people) to be allocated to their best uses, let free market economics allocate them for you.

Michael R. Bernstein Not sure where you were going with your comment on the litmus test. The correct answer is either 'both are only rough approximations' or 'it depends' (for example, income from inherited wealth should probably be treated differently).

Punishment by the market can take too long, leading to more violent corrections. For example, the current correction is indirectly (and partly) due to long-term wage stagnation in the US (increased home ownership by various means was pushed as a substitute). Wage stagnation is primarily due to competition among companies for short-term profitability, when the market and the economy as a whole would likely have been better served by higher wages and less consumer debt. Meanwhile, the market punished any company that individually pursued the correct long-term strategy.

It turns out that the maxim 'the free market best allocates scarce resources' has many hidden assumptions and simplifications, such as a lack of externalities and symmetrical information. At the very least, markets themselves need to be regulated to better approximate those assumptions, or we get market failures, and I would say that a market that continues to reward CEOs of failing companies in collapsing industries is failing, and taking the rest of us down with it.

Yes, regulating markets can create the problem of regulatory capture, but we have that problem anyway, and it's evil twin 'deregulatory capture'. The answer is greater transparency (the primary role of regulation, in my opinion).

in Start Your Business Now on Windley's Technometria
I'm relieved to hear people say this about starting a business in tough times. I confess I had by doubts about whether it'd be better to just take a job, but I came to the conclusion that increasing risk on the job markets just make the risk of starting your own gig more palpable. :)

Of course my initial product is targeted primarily to the construction industry, so we'll see whether my conclusion (for myself) bears the test of time. :)

Here here. This is a total sham because every time the FED prints up money, it devalues my personal savings.

in Anti-Perl Social Engineering on Windley's Technometria
Phil,

I've seen the same stigma applied toward Python. My general response is that it's odd that so-and-so is too good for it, but /Google/ isn't.

I think most of this social engineering stems from "technologists ego". It's the attitude that says, "If I don't know a certain language, it must be because it sucks. (...Because it's not /me/ that sucks...)" It's a form of protectionism and self-preservation that's almost always detrimental to company interests.

Sadly, I see this all the time (and it's definitely not limited to programming languages). But I couldn't agree more that it's nice to see qualified programmers enter the marketplace. :)

I look forward to your presentation at UTOSC.

IMHO, your friend is in clear violation of a trademark. Something like AppEngineHelp would be less offensive since it's not likely to be confused with the real deal, and I can see why they might let something like that go. If I were Google, I would have done the same thing --after asking nicely, of course. :)

Phil - I couldn't agree more, except with the part about you liberals not being immoral (JK).

I highly recommend "Basic Economics: A Citizen's Guide to the Economy" as an excellent, objective treatise on why everyone (especially the poor) is benefit when government lets price and the free market do their thing. I've borrowed the CDs from Rand Bateman and would love to pass them on to you if you're interested; just let me know.
