Hey Kevin, thanks for sharing this great set of slides! I see bits of Jeremiah Owyang and Brian Solis' work in there, mashed-up with your usual flashes of brilliance.

I think Obama's background as a grassroots activist and lawyer helped him significantly in winning the battle for hearts and purses. While citizen engagement through social media could be a positive facet of that experience, it isn't the be-all and end-all for fund raising if you lack that human touch, empathy and charisma - qualities which are embodied by Obama and played to positive effect by his followers. Still, it is good to have a step by step approach in using social media for positive causes.

in The #1 Way to Build a Community on Sui Generis
Right on! I think building communities is often the poor second cousin to developing great content, which is sad because of its importance. For me, I feel that the offline activity is definitely just as important than the online correspondences, and could in fact strengthen relationships forged through blogs, forums, emails and IMs.

Derrick Kwa Yeah, definitely. To quote Cory Doctorow, "Conversation is king. Content is just something to talk about." Yes, great content is important, but the people and interactions are more important. And I agree, offline activity is just as important, which is part of why we brought the Social Media Breakfast to Singapore. It's about relationships, more than anything.

Of course! These were my favourite and I remember how expensive they were in primary school. Had to save up for a couple of days before "investing" in one of these delectable drinks....

in StartupSchwag #11: Wearing my FriendFeed t-shirt on theory.isthereason
Its interesting to see how social media companies are using more traditional paper and cloth-based means to get the word out there, and giving it an element of cool to boot! Somehow, this doesn't quite catch on as much in Singapore. Perhaps it is time to introduce some hip geekery in our wardrobe.

in So… would you hire a social media strategist? (Part 1) on theory.isthereason
I think that I would hire one only if he or she comes with other more traditional skills in the areas of marketing or Public Relations. And the person should also have an existing network of relevant contacts in the social media space, or be somebody who is actively blogging/facebooking/twittering and understands the reactions of his or her community. This is quite similar to hiring a PR professional with his or her own rolodex of active media contacts, as opposed to somebody who knows read all the books and knows all the strategies, but doesn't have the faintest idea how to create and sustain a relationship.

Well, it looks like there suddenly appears to be a Global Cooling? It feels temperate here in Singapore, except for the nonstop rain and showers.

Man oh man.... this post brings back memories of an earlier one by the princess of blog Xiaxue. Check it out here (its a five-parter and a classic):

I agree with your principle subject to the tenets of availability. Now carpark spaces is a bit more tricky.... Like handicapped toilets, I see that many of them are underused. However, should we then be using them and making them unavailable for the folks with disabilities when the time comes.

Hey nice one there Kevin. I promised myself that I should read both books, but unfortunately I have failed miserably on both counts! I like the way your mind map elegantly weaves in the different concepts of mass collaboration espoused by the authors...

in Back to Buffalo, Back to Worries on theory.isthereason
Nice to know that you have reached back in Buffalo safe and sound. Yeah I heard you mention to us about the solitude and loneliness there too, but at least you have a chance to be an academic and enjoy its accompanying benefits. I would love to study for one, but I find that I am stuck currently due to the high opportunity cost of leaving my current job and being a fulltime student. But the thought does occur to me now and then. Perhaps the time will come when I will also go back to my books.

Meanwhile, enjoy the snow and remember to keep us posted on your life there. Remember that Singapore will always love you, inspector gadget!

in National Stadium going, going, gone… on theory.isthereason
Nice set of photos dude. I am sure it must be an emotional farewell of sorts for those sports men and women. I used to train at the National Stadium about 16 years ago (gawd I am old!) when I was part of the SAFSA Dragon Boat Team. There is nothing more adrenaline pumping than running around the track, doing push ups and doing intervals at that place. The gym which we used for medicine ball throwing and weights was quite different then, without any air conditioning. Of course, it was a treat now and then to see national athletes training beside us, and it boosted our morale too!
