Hey,

I have the Toneport which is basically the same thing only just the software. I love it for recording. There are many nights where I am up very late cranking...I don't know...Enter Sandman...through my cans, oblivious to the fact that my wife has been standing there with our screaming infant wanting me to take over.

"What were your playing?"

I say I was laying tracks

"You're recording Metallica songs"

Then I have to fess up to the fact that I had it on some cheesy Rectifier setting that sounds enormous but will never see the light of day because it is too cliche.

That was really long...enjoy yer box.

Dude, this is seriously awesome. I think John Mayer is one of the most underrated guys playing today. His ease with a guitar is on display in this clip. He can just make it do what ever he wants. All those harmonies he is looping...nuts.

I use Line 6 gear. I am not a Line 6 hater, but using the Pod live is just sucking away the tone. The pod is fabulous for recording when you don't have the convenience of a big studio and amps to mic. I've laid some killer tracks at 4 in the morning with my kids asleep yards away from me with my TonePort (which is basically a software version of the Pod) I love the way the modeler sounds when you go to tape, but something about using it live just doesn't sound right. In my opinion, Line 6 is stellar with their "clean" effects. My DL4 Delay and I are inseparable. It is luscious and powerful. Same with my Blue Modulation pedal (I forget the number of it) But distortion is really hard to emulate. If I am not using my amp channel, I use either my Sparkle Drive of my OCD pedal from Fulltone.

The Sparkle Drive is cool for a boost. That's what I use it for. That overdriven bluesly boost sound. My OCD will tear the skin from your teeth and if I put the Sparkle before it, I can actually kick your teeth in....which is always fun. What is great about the Sparkle is that you can dial in a boosted clean sound and blend it with the distortion...so you end up with this very chimy overdrive. It lives up to it's name.

I have to agree with Natalie about Jesus Freak. I remember putting the album on with a couple music snob friends because we had heard that it was different. We really tried to hate it. But could not.
Every song is incredible.

There was also a band called Sometime Sunday that rocketh like no band rocketh before. Mikee the lead singer was 6'7" and made Henry Rollins look like Timberlake.

Thanks for the memory lane post. I think that there was something different about the music scene in the early to mid nineties. I sensed it shifting in the late nineties when we all began saying "What's alternative these-days?" Everything back then was about the live show and the album....and I think it turned into focusing more on the single and the production.

I miss the mosh pits of my youth, and now I am the old guy at the back of the room.

As I read about this experience, I had that weird, tingle thing that heats up the backside of your skin...I feel this all the time. I come home with a stomach in knots from the goings on of ministry, trying to shift gears in my head to the goings on of the family, the household...when did we become a household? But it always seems like I become the prince who slays the dragon within 3 minutes of being home. I stand there wearing a silver sequined robe and holding a plastic sword, and I am rescuing the 4-year-old sleeping beauty from the dragon. Muscles relaxing. Mind slowing. Eyebrows unfurling. Thanks for helping me remember that. She turns 4 tomorrow.

Living in downtown Riva was the best decision that Jess and I ever made...we love the unique character of houses that are 100 years old and that have no driveways (you either park on the street like us, or you pull through your alley to your backyard.) People use the sidewalks downtown. The strangest and coolest thing about it is the odd demographic. Two blocks up 5th street, the houses are 3500 sqft mansions that go for 2mil. Two blocks down 5th street, the houses have all been broken into group homes and low income apartments. It creates a wonderfully surreal neighborhood when you go for a walk and I have realized that when we walk toward the big houses, the lawns look great, but there is no one around. They are all inside. When we walk down to the other end, people are out, people are talking, kids playing...it's community. I find that interesting.

There is definitely a hunger we have created in the "worship consumer" for emotionally heightened experiences. That in turn puts pressure on us to create a worthy product...he used the words "whip them into a frenzy"...I have felt that pressure.

Do you ever feel like we are all just contributing to the consumer mentality of Christians in America by creating big entertaining event-experiences for folks to "attend?"

I am not being critical, I am in the same boat. Sometimes I just wonder "to what end" are we doing all of this. What are we gaining? Is it so that we draw folks in? What happens when people are drawn in because they are entertained? Does production in worship (whiz-bang lighting, eye-popping video) become manipulation rather than inspiration?

Do you you wrestle with this too?

My fave was Quiet Reverie where the dude looks like he is pouring out his soul through his pre recorded cheesy MIDI music.

That and the fact the when the Asian gal gets up, the music gets all "Asian."

Still, I would totally use this for triggering big hits and samples.

Thank you Shaun for voicing something that has been stirring in me for a while. Maybe we "Worship Leaders" need to try and understand how to allow people to experience worship in Spirit and Truth...anywhere, and everywhere, as a part of our lifestyle. If that doesn't work for us...maybe we should be Music Leaders and appoint someone else as "Worship" leaders.

It reminds me of the suggestion wall at Whole Foods Market. There is a wall...you write on a piece of paper and instead of putting it in a box, you post it to the board. Now, for a business this seems very savvy...it says the to consumer, "Let us hear your petty likes and dislikes, we are here for you."

I'm not bashing Los for asking the question, but I am taken aback at the sheer consumerism that is dripping from these responses. They are laundry lists of likes and dislikes. This is fine for a store, where you become a patron and shop because of the experience or value it contains, but for a service of believers coming together to corporately tell our Savior how we love and adore Him, praising Him, thanking Him for who He is and swearing to lift Him up in good times and bad, it makes me ill.

Are we so focused on our own wants...our own perceived needs? Now, I agree that there are certain things leaders to that can be annoying...and the stories are funny, but I don't understand some of the folks saying things like,

-we hate greeting people (seriously? Why are you even here?)
-we hate slow/fast/new/old/dense/lite songs (Do you remember the songs last week? Is your guy/gal changing it up)
-we hate mini-sermons (well yeah...who doesn't)

I know I'm late to the discussion...been on vacation with no *Dun Dun Duhhh* internet access.
