in Top 10 Social Media Stories You Missed this Weekend on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Those were big stories but I think they pale in comparison to the story of Eric De La Cruz and the fight to get him adequate health care so he can get a heart transplant. His sister, former CNN reporter and correspondent, @VeronicaDLCruz has been rallying a growing army (a.k.a. Eric Twitter heart Army: 140+ strong) to help raise fund, petition, and raise awareness of our broken healthcare system.

So far over $650K has been raised via donations ranging from $1 to over $1300 with the help of Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor who offered VIP-type opportunities at concerts to raise funds.

I'd put more details her but I'd love for Mashable to write a strory on it. The best site for info is www.weloveeric.com and search the "#eric" hashtag on Twitter.

in Retweet is stupid (Scripting News) on Scripting News
I'm not a bit fan of seeing nothing but retweets but in this type of large but viral ecosystem, the RT helps insightful, fun, timely, and urgent messages "bubble up" to get our attention.
quepol There's no reason Twitter couldn't build a better method for surfacing things you "like" or "favorite" so that things would bubble up exactly the same way without the messy user experience of "RT". Newbies have no idea what that is and often use it incorrectly.

in Five Phases of Social Media Marketing | SocialComputingJournal.com on Social Computing Magazine
Very interesting post Janet! The concept of a free social media marketing program is as non existent as a free media plan. There are always costs associated.

One thing that I would add to a social media plan is a decision on the desired end result. Is the company doing this to drive traffic to their site to convert a sale? Is this purely for PR and publicity to expand the brand name? This is an important question because it sets the criteria for measuring "success" and it can effect the type of relationships formed on social media sites.

Joe Schmitt I agree with Jesse. Deciding what the goals and measurements ahead of time is crucial to designing the campaign.

in Head-to-Head: TweetDeck vs Seesmic Desktop on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Nice review Jennifer! TweetDeck is fortunate it came out with the memory-improved version today or it would have lost a lot of ground to Seesmic Desktop. I tested things out last night and Seesmic was looking better and better every MB.

Both are very powerful tools and I look forward to future innovations from both camps!

in What Should Corporations Do With Their Blogs on Chris Brogan
I love that this discussion started with a basic question that many people ask, "why are laptop batteries lacking?" The result of this conversation has a chance to spark new ideas and possibly lead to new innovations in the chip industry/battery industry. I commend AMD for asking the question, even having a blog (still somewhat rare for a B2B company), and for using the blog in a way that can effect a larger change. That's what corporate blogging has to offer.

in Gary Vaynerchuk - How will Twitter monetize? So many people at... on Gary Vaynerchuk
Completely agree with you. Unless there is a Google buyout of Twitter, Twitter is poised to yank away tons of money from one of the most successful companies of our era - that would be Google. This will also force Web 1.0 companies to quickly scramble and try to figure out a Web 2.0 strategy.

This was smart on FB's side. They obviously heard the uproar from users and probably also saw it in their site data - fewer uploads, etc.

in Auto Reply Glitches, Incorrect “Last Tweets” on The SocialToo Blog
Do you know if this has anything to do with the strange Spanish tweets that are getting sent out from some folks? I've had several tweet peeps seeing them and folks are losing a lot of followers over it.

jessestay's picture
jessestay Jesse, yes, that's exactly what this is - it was reading the wrong
information when we were trying to get user information about you or the
people you follow, causing this glitch. I don't anticipate this ever
happening again. Sorry for the inconvenience.

You're not actually sending out those spanish Tweets though. We're just
recording them wrong in the e-mail, so losing followers shouldn't be because
of that.

in Twitter follower problem on Jim's Marketing Blog
Thanks for sharing your experiences with this. With Twitter's poor tech communication methods, it feels like one is a little kid in the back of a bus.

I think Twitter could improve by adding those little alert messages to the Web client as they have done in the past. People still don't know to look for info on the Twitter blog.

Hi Jim, you've done a great job supporting a sense of community on your blog via the comments. I love it when you say that a post's comments are better than the post itself. Shows humility and that you really see the value others bring to the conversation.

in 2009/01/09/palm-pre-multitasking/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Do not underestimate the power of developers to help build a broader platform.
Microsoft certainly hasn't .

By allowing application creation using html, css, and xml for their apps, they are opening up development to a much wider develper pool. This means tons of apps (hopefully great ones).

The new Palm might not be an iPod killer, but it is a Developer thriller.

in 2009/01/01/is-it-stupid-to-trust-twitter-apps-with-your-password/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
I answered Maybe because for many applications, it's necessary to pass in the username and password information to access certain data via Twitter's API. And we're talking *basic* info. For some applications that tweet out messages, it's the only way to accomplish that. I do like the "workaround" that Stuart Dallas came up with but there are some pieces of data that can not be accessed that way.

That said, trusting an application to store your information, especially a totally new starup is very questionable.

Chris, you were transparent on the Kmart post being sponsored and you've followed up with this great post leading the blogging world on the discussion of sponsored posts. What more do people want?

On a different note, as an Internet marketer and advertiser, it's interesting to see the associated promotion cost on this. I think Kmart is getting a massive return on its investment on this promotion.

in Marketing Consideration for Social Media Types on Chris Brogan
Chris, those are all great "go to market" strategies. One other thing I suggest, is for folks to hold back on the Web 2.0 buzz speak. You're building a blog for the offline customer so they can attract and keep customers. Period. That translates into dollars for them. It's either worth their time and money or it isn't.

If the client starts to ask more curious questions then fine, buzz away. But start with plain dollars and sense. @jesseluna on Twitter

in Watching Twitter Become the World’s First Ubiquitous Computing Brand on Digital Strategy for a Networked World
Hi Michael, Once again, great post.

Twitter is definitely becoming more ubiquitous because it is at the center of the social media/networking world. Blogs, Flickr, Twitpics, YouTube and cell phone vids all flow through it then are blasted out, just like a giant jet nozzle.

The scary part is that Twitter is still only being used by innovators/early adopters.
