in What is This All For? on John Cow dot COM
You've had a few posts lately that make it obvious that you've been going through some "life changes" Cow...or at least been doing a lot of thinking and/or soul searching.

Love posts like these. It's extremely important to know why you're doing something, especially like blogging/internet marketing. It's easier to keep going through hard times when you know the reason (and it's a good one).

Cheers!

in Moving From Busyness To Business - Taking The Right Actions on John Cow dot COM
Definitely something we all can relate to.

Good call on "networking". So many peeps claim they're networking when really they're just "chatting", and trust me, there's a difference! There's nothing wrong with shooting the cow dung in the pasture now and then, but don't trick yourself into believing that the chatter is "work" that's helping you advance your business.

Also, great analogy using the football team! You can get a sense of satisfaction by doing "tasks that keep the wheels spinning" (lateral passes), but what's the score at the end of the 4th quarter?

Great stuff Joe!
Just in case you were left in charge of feeding the cows, you know they don't eat sammiches, right?

Cheers!

Normal Joe Yeah Jay! Nothing wrong with "chatting" but when it takes up too much time and you really think you are "networking" it is a problem!

Glad you were diggin the football analogy, it just kinda came to me during the video lol.

Cow's don't eat sammiches? Oh man...not even Hayburgers?

I could really benefit from organizing the post ahead of time. I often just start "free writing" and then clean it up afterwards. I do preview it in the blog unpublished a few times though.

It may sound strange, but I seem to notice mistakes way faster (and easier) when I look at the post in the preview of the "blog theme" as opposed to "text only" in the WP-admin.

Great tips as usual COW.

in Using oDesk for Outsourcing Continued on John Cow dot COM
Sorry to hear that COW.

I've had the same experiences with designers and writers who not only lie about experience, but have a solid (assumingly fake) portfolio to back up their claims. I've had friends/associates also have these same experiences, almost as if the portfolio wasn't from the same designer. Ever have that happen? Very frustrating.

It definitely defeats the purpose of hiring a freelancer when they end up wasting your time instead of saving it. That's the unfortunate part of finding VAs and freelancers online. You have to weed out the bad ones, and hang on to the solid ones.

I love your ideas on making oDesk better. I still haven't tried them out, but I am going to.

Appreciate the continuing, honest review. I especially look forward to the "how to checklist".

Hope it works out for you
Cheers!

Offline, it feels like the actually suck energy from your body. Don't you start to feel "tired" fast when you are listening to a bunch of blah..blah...negaitive blurbs...blah? lol

Same with online, but it's a lot easier to hit the close button, the back button, or the block option. :)

Great advice!

I'm pretty good at sticking to the rules with any niche sites I do, but my title/desc sucks for SuiteJ. I think my decription is something about drinking coffee and listening to music. It actually is what I'm doing 24/7, but not the reason i want people to click. lol

Your tips are great, but I might have to stop coming here. I'm contsantly reminded of changes I need to make on the SuiteJ blog.

in Outsource Using oDesk - So Far A Thumbs Up! on John Cow dot COM
I saw the banners everywhere but never checked it out for basically the same reasons.

What do you man by "it shows you exactly what they're doing"? Can you see how much they've done so far, mid-project?

If you give them 8 hours to do a job, what if they go over that time and have not finished? Are they obligated to still finish "asap" without extra pay past the initial agreed 8 hours?

Is it only "programmers", or writers, designers, etc as well?

Should I have just gone to the site instead of asking you all these questions? lol

Cheers!

John Cow You can indicate the maximum amount of hours you will allow them to bill you for per week if you want. How the system works is they have to be logged in to oDesk when they are working and it will take a screen sot every few minutes. This tracks so you can see that they are working. I fully expected some of them to go over the 8 hours, especially since there was a few special items they had to do. For this part, I am testing to see who does the best job all together. That person might not be the fastest but if they are pretty fast and the quality is good and they cost less then that is a good total package.

"There’s a ton of information here about running a business, marketing, how to utilize a web presence for your business..."

But Cow....I'm learning all that right here at JohnCow.com :!:

Sounds like a good idea for a community, but I agree with the guys above. At first glance, it seems like it'll take too much of my time to "figure out if I like/need it". I'm too used to "Web 2.0" layouts showing me how I can benefit at a glance of the front page.

We're all spoiled now and have the attention span of a 3 year old. On top of that, we have 376,498 other websites to visit in the next 10 minutes. Your front page better grab me by the ba***. ;)

in Three Types of Blog Writing Styles to Get You Started on John Cow dot COM
I don't know which heading my "writing style" falls under in that list, but I did learn that maybe sometimes you need to really steer in a different direction completely.

I added a video in my last post where I basically acted like an insane wingnut, and I ended up with 18 subscribers that afternoon (which is a lot for me in a day).

Someone called me a "vampire on acid" (referencing the end of the video), and that was one of the nicer comments. lol

Does this mean I have to add videos and write like I just flew over the coo coo's nest?

Tell me Cow!

John Cow It all comes down to testing and tracking... if something is getting you results then why would you not continue with it?

Just make sure you keep tracking it and it the results are good but you get a few loud mouth smucks that say they hate it.. dont worry... let the results speak for themselves and keep the majority happy.

OMG! That was ridiculously distrubing. The COWnappers are ruthless!

That imagery will be forever burned into my memory like that scene from Hannibal where Ray Liotta had to eat his own brain, except (*gasp*) this is REAL!

The worst part is, the COWnappers are obviously toying with you by giving you false hope. That clue is way to cryptic for anyone to ever possibly figure out.

I'm here to help though, and I'll keep trying.

Makes perfect sense, and thanks for outlining it so well.

The final "Important" tip is a crucial one that everyone should try to apply. It defeats the purpose to gain visitors by optimizing the page for search engines if the visitors are annoyed when they get there and bounce in 3 seconds.

Thanks again for the solid reply. It's appreciated.

in Best Keywords for Blog Posts via KeywordCorral on John Cow dot COM
Ok, I'm going to check out the Corral.

I have a couple questions. What's your take on bolding the keyword several times? I've read many people saying they are both for and against it.

From a perspective of a reader, it annoys me when the same phrase is bold several times throughout an article, but as an IMer, I do it myself on niche content sites. lol

At the end of your video, you mentioned to notice that "Best Keywords" BEGINS the title.
How much difference does that make as opposed to having it in the "middle of the title", like "Find The Best Kewyords Using Keyword Corral"
Know what I mean? Or is it a case of "many small things together in one post" will add up to a big impact?

Let me know CowMan!
Cheers!

SuiteJs last blog post..Using Google Analytics To Find Hidden Gems In Keywords

John Cow Actually i went a little overboard in this post on purpose... just for some fun.

You should only use bold when you specifically want to highlight certain points. If you bold the keyword once.. you should try to have it in a phrase as it can make your post look a little spammy.

As for the keyword position in the title... from my personal experiments it does appear that having the keyword in the first four words of the title gives it a bit of a bump... but the most important thing is to make sure the title attracts the readers attention. No use having a keyword perfect title that looks like crap and does nothing to get the readers attention.

Your last point is a good one, as it is true that many things add up but there is the 80/20 rule where 20% of the things make up for 80% of the results. To me the the 20% things are...

1. keyword in start of title
2. keyword in start of description
3. keyword in the first sentence
4. keyword at least three more times in the content
5. Keyword bold or italicized once

IMPORTANT --> all these things are done after the post is written. First write the post for the reader and then try to optimize it without losing any of the quality.

Make sense?

Great answer CowMan! That could have easily been a long blog post. ;)

Using www redirects to my domain "without www", but commentluv doesn't work on many sites if I don't enter the www. in the URL field.
This doesn't affect my site negatively, does it (In G's eyes)?

John Cow no.. as long as the redirect is set up on yoru site.. it will tell google what it is and that is what they will credit it too.

in Traffic from Commenting | JohnCow Interviews IMWithJoe.com on John Cow dot COM
It's funny to hear Joe say that he will often check out someone who is leaving a trail of quality comments and recognizing their avatar repeatedly. That's why I originally went to his blog.

As soon as I got there, I watched one video and subscribed.

Besides delivering IM stuff in a unique (and honest) way, he's freakin' fun to watch. He has that "video post X factor", where you're engaged regardless of whether he's talkin' about keyword search tactics or sammiches. lol

You guys both made great points about leaving quality comments and their long term effects. I'm a firm beleiver in spending time leaving quality comments as opposed to doubling or tripling the amount of crappy comments just for the extra backlinks.

Quality commenting can lead to so much more than just a backlink. A good example is this interview happening. :)

Great job guys!
Cheers!

in 3 Steps of Authority Content – How Confident Writing Converts on John Cow dot COM
Being personal is huge. People love it when you "open up", and with so much to choose from out there, readers want to go to the ones they can trust. What better way to gain trust than to be open/honest in your writing (or videos)?

That definitely applies to what your selling/promoting as well. You're always going to write a "better review" if you actually believe in the product your recommending. Plus, a reader can often tell if the author actually uses/endorses the product because there will be more "personality" in the writing as opposed to just "the facts".

Great tips Cow!
