I'm a grad student at UNC, but went to IU as an undergrad. He stayed at the hotel I work in and from his brief gatherings in our lobby he never looked overzealous or disapointed. He would have been an awesome poker player, because I couldn't read the guy at all. In fact, my friend who is a UNC undergrad thought they didn't make a good impression. My gut feeling is that each of the four programs he's visiting is getting the same type of vibe.
I wanted to say go Hooshiers but felt that Coach Sampson can do the work for for me.

Yeah I wish we could steal some of their players, but ( I'm really not trying to be rude here) North Carolina does not mass produce great players like they do in Indiana. It just irks me how they feel UNC is superior to everyone else when they use Indiana kids to win their past two national championships (May and Montross). I guess just tough living in ACC country, and you hear the same story over and over again.

For the record, I'm very disappointed in Mackey. When you do something like that you are simply lacking brains. However, it seems that this act was considered unusual by his standards. It also seems that many people around his community still vouch that he's a good person. If he would agree that once he attends Indiana that he enters a rehabilitation program and volunteers in a group that devoted to ending the use of cocaine. I would also suggest that he red shirt a year so he can focus on recovery. If he agrees to these stipulations then I would be ok with him attending IU. I don't care what anybody else has to say about the subject, everyone is entitled to a second chance. If he messes up again, then kick him out, because we have given him all the resources necessary to improve his lifestyle.
On a side note I'm disappointed in my fellow hoosiers who immediately trash kids from any school who get into trouble (like in Illinois and Purdue). These problems go beyond the realm of basketball, and one should hope that a kid can recover and learn from past mistakes.

Tom, I was a special education student till I finished high school. I graduated IU with honors, and I'm pursuing my PHD at UNC. Just because you have a disability does not make you an idiot. Not trying to pick a fight, but what grades a kid gets does not reflect if one is a good person. I'm not going to judge Mackey right off the bat. If coach Sampson feels that this kid can learn from this incident he has my backing. I would be proud of my University knowing that instead of abondaning him, we gave him a chance. Don't get me wrong, he has no wiggle room but if learns from his mistakes perhaps we might actually save a life instead of seeing one go down in the dumps.

I'll agree to mmm's comments. I don't want him to necesarily play basketball for us, I just don't want the kid to be completly thrown into the gutter. This just doesn't go for mackey, it goes for all kids who make this type of mistake, and who put the comitment and yearn for a second chance. After all we all can't be perfect like Tom.

That is one heck of a trio. I'ts also great that Devin Ebanks will acompany all three of them on his official visit. Perhaps they could all realize that if they all go to one school that they could actually create something legendary. In turn the major publicity would help their NBA stock. They already have the natural skills, and Kelvin sampson, can teach them all the fundamentls to make them great college and NBA players.

I think thats what Derek Elston brings to the table already. Besides 2010 is a big class and the great ones come from the midwest. Unlike Mike Davis I think Sampson has Plan B already set.

Ok I'll say it. I think D.J. White is better than Tyler Hansbrough. I honestly think the nation does not think much of D.J. White, because he was injured for a season. I think if they play each other in the tournament D.J will make it real dificult for Hanborough to get easy baskets or quick jumpers. I would rather see D.J. as a defensive stopper than averaging 18 a game.

Skittle I hope your right. It would definetly open up Ej's three point capabilities. The most important player for me is going to be jemarcus ellis. As long as he can hit the consistent jumper that he's known for, we will do just fine come march.

I agree as well but in the later part of the season I can See Eli Holman taking significant minutes away from Lance. It all depends who the hooshiers face because I would like to see D.J. White play the 4 or 5. DJ should always defend the best offensive 4 or 5 of any opposing team. I think Crawford is going to have significant minutes at the point, because the following year I can see Basset taking the shootoing guard spot if Ej leaves after one year ( of course it depends on the recruiting class we haul). It's going to be interesting to see what role A.J. is going to play, and if deandre thomas and mike white could provide signigicant minutes if and when our team gets in foul trouble. It is going to be an awesome season. Ej and DJ are going to be great and it depends how Sampson develops Ellis and basset to determine if we win a national championship.

Every single time I'm happy to be a hoosier something (like mackey and mike davis) always takes me down. grrr.

Is it just me, but the national sports media outlets making this out to be a big deal because they need a story to keep their lives busy. Lets keep this simple. phone calls, B&W copies, and Jackets... oh my. give me a break, the punishment fits the crime. I think when recruits actually read the rules that were broken, they will say "so what?". The very fact that we punished ourselves for such crap will show that we as a program took the responsibility to handle such prblems. If the ncaa bans us from postseason I will recruit everyone here to press charges. If Florida State can allow thugs to break the law while under their care, if unc is allowed to get nba players to play with their recruits, etc and allow them to play in bowls and and tournament then something is real messed up. Whatever happens to us we have to stay united in the final decision, it just seems that everyone outside IU wants us to fail, so they can get a bigger chunk of the pie. I don't want to see that happen.

In the end I think that he going to choose UNC mainly because he gets along well with Roy williams. It kind of seems that the indystar believes that he's going there as well, because the majority of the pics that they show of tyler zeller have Roy williams right beside him.
Anywho I still think that Indiana would have been the better home because IU offers practicaly the same education, fan base ( though our students are more crazy), and basketball tradition. However, IU is closer to home, (it is cool when your parents can come watch your games, and his good friends are going to be playing at IU. If he does not choose IU, I think we can still benefit from it, because it opens up a scholarship for the highly talented 09 class. I would rather have room for stephenson if he decides to come to IU than Zeller. Who knows whats going to happen, but either way IU can still have the glass full mentality.

Witt, you really are spouting incoherent statements. Sad........ Very Sad. Sniff.. For one I believe there is plenty of constructive arguments that argue against IU's favor. Just look at both sides of the coin with the Sampson phone call issue and the Bud mackey situation. I think there is a difference when someone provides good argumentative points, instead of treating someone like an idiot. AKA like how Paul insulted our program and how you insulted Kellen. At times I disagree with them but I don't treat them like idiots. Respect, thats what it all boils down to.

Does everyone hear feel overly concerned that Tyler Zeller might not choose our program? I completly understand that we would love this kid to come IU, but I honestly think that Eli Holman can pick up most ( not necesarily all) of the load for three years. Though it is important to me that Tyler goes to IU to make a statement to the rest of the nation that they better stop trying to steal our players to build your championships.

I'm happy with nine. I think that we have more upside than the rest of the teams, which leaves us the possibility that we can contend for a national championship. It all depends how eli holman develops, and if jamarcus Ellis can provide consistency in rebounds, points, and assists.

Don't get me wrong guys, I love IU basketball, but I honestly think that at times we really hurt ourselves from becoming a great program. If we were to look at Senderoff actions without looking into Sampson's past we would realize that practically all assistants from most if not alll programs make excessive phone calls. One just has to look at the Jay Bilas article about excesive phone calls to confirm such suspision. Punish him yes, but to fire someone over phone calls is a bit much to me.

I honestly can't blame Ebanks and the other New York kids to decide to skip IU. We did not have the back of one of our assistants that they love, and I fear that in the long term future assistants from outside the realm of Indiana (and we do need them weather you people from Indiana want them or not) will ignore us because of what we did to Senderoff. I will always root for my hoosiers no matter what happens, but I'll admit, I'm a little bit upset in ourselves about overeacting.

Now more than ever we need a great season ( I'm thinking elite 8) just to show that we capable of putting championship type teams on the floor, so that future recruits can give us a second look.

I hope the IU players have a " we are going to defend our coach mentality" and ride that passion all the way to a championship season. I hope they don't feel that this is another Mike Davis situation, where Sampsons's job is on the line on a game by game basis. Lets kick some butt, and laugh at everyone who is trying to bring our program down.

I'm not saying I don't want Halloway, and I'm greatfull that he will become a hoosier, but if zeller and Jones say yes and we find out that the ncaa will take away another scholarship, I would hate to tell one of our kids that they can't come to IU. This inturn would create more bad press. I just wish they would have said time out and air on the side of caution. That being said I like what Kelvin Sampson is doing. He is trying to gather just a couple of superstuds and surounding them with players who will grind it out and do anything for the team. This is how championship teams are formulated.

I would love to say IU. I really do think its the best situation for him. He will receive more playing time than UNC ,we will run in transition with the addition of Ebanks ( Maybe EJ as well though its probably a 10% chance), the fans are nuts, his friends and fellow players are at IU, I know through attending both UNC and IU that IU has more christian organizations so he could get involved in more groups, and his family will be able go to his games. Yet I do think the phone sanction will take its course and cost us Zeller. Though Kelvin should be punsished I think the national media made too much of a big deal, and will cost us both Jones and Zeller ( man I hope I'm wrong). I'm not worried about the 09 class because when we show how good this team is, it will heal all wounds.

I think they played really well. The scary thing is that it seems that they already developed some kind of chemistry on the court, and it will only get better as the season goes on.
I think Jordan Crawford is going to be unstopable by the time he is a junior in college. The kid is very confident, and you can tell that he wants to control the tempo of the game. That over the back pass to gordan was amazing. I don't expect that type of great shooting night each game, but I can see some consistent numbers in point and assists this season.
I also loved what I saw from Basset. He was driving inside but had total control of the ball. He also shot a couple of threes which will keep oposing defenses honest.
Eli Holman looked nervous, but you can see that he's very athletic and see he has the potential for great things. holman needs to gain more muscle, and develop a fearless attitude by attacking the rim. With time I can see him filling a tyrus thomas type role where he works for monster blocks and dunks.
Gordan was Gordan, and he has such a beautifull touch beyond the arch. D.J. looked great as well. Great first impressions. I hope Tyler Zeller watched this game, to prove that Coach Sampson can run a transition offense. Anywho, great stuff.

I think that if Sampson develops Holman he could become better than Tyler Zeller. We need Ebanks to recruit Stephenson badly and make him wear the cream and crimson. I think with a great year of basketball it will lay a foundation for future recruits.

I agree, but you have to admit you wouldn't complain. I think through a good year we could have these one year studs on a rotational basis. I think what Sampson does best is find great hidden talent( Roth, Pritchard and Crawford. (I'm excited about Pritchard, because of his footwork is pretty advanced for a junior in high school). Time will tell but I'm really not that worried that we couldn't get Zeller.

I agreewith Kellen. If Gordan leaves perhaps redshirting him would be the best option. The 08-09 team would be a lot better with Aj. coming off the bench, allowing both bassett and crawford to rest.

a lot are saying that crawford had a bad game. I don't think so. Granted the threes he took were off, but he was way behind the arch when he took those. I just think he has to get used to the zone, but he looked composed by passing the ball to the open man. I hate zone but the hoosiers looked or their shots. I'm still waiting a couple more games to see where Jordan crawford stands.

On a completely different topic.
Ok guys I need some advice. I'm a very superstitious person. My favorite player is A.J Moye and I wear his Jersey every game. Unfortunetly his jersey number is # 2. During the pre season its fine, but when regular and tournament time starts some voice on top of my head says "do you really want to wear number two when March Madness begins". I don't know what to do. Should I wear the jersey, and not care. Should I wear the jersey and add a paper 3 to show I'm supporting Eric Gordon? Or should I not wear the Jersey at all? Whenever I walk around Chapel Hill students make fun of me for wearing the #2 jersey, but I still scream back " oh yeah we still beat the crap out of you in a national championship game ( but the students don't respect history...... very sad)." I don't want to compare it to Coach Sampson's blue shirt situation but I'm conflicted and don't know where to go from here. Anywho any advice will be welcomed ( Or your insults for that matter. Don't worry I'm a new yorker and I can take it). I just figured we needed a topic to relieve us from the A.J Ratliff saga.

We can't have infighting amongst us, because believe me the rest of the nation is enjoying this because it means that they will profit with one less powerhouse program. Be composed and have a good time.

Thanks again for the advice about the Jersey. I will continue to wear it without regret, because you guys are right. He is a warrior and he put everything out on the floor. However, I think I will buy a #23 Jersey later, because if we beat UNC-Chapel HIll during the tournament and win a championship I will march right in the middle of the UNC campus with my IU gear playing we are the champions ( I might have stuff thrown at me, but that would actually pump me up). You know what separates us from other programs is that we remember all of our players that play hard. Fancy skills are great, but give me a kid with heart and willing take a charge. Go Hoosiers.

Much better in the second half. We still need to work on defense, but I think the players will see that when you have strong defense the offense will be much better.
Lance stemlar needs to cover his man, and I really do hope that Mcgee and Homan develop there game so one of them could start or take a lot of time away from Stemlar.
Eric Gordon lived up to the hype by breaking the freshman premier game scoring record. What makes him so great is that he gets his points, but is great at every aspect of the game.
Jordan Crawford played pretty well. I don't know his line yet, but he handled the ball pretty well and was not afraid to take it into the basket.

The one thing I love about Coach Samson is this man knows how to coach. HIs halftime adjustmenst were perfect. We need better D but that will come in time. I thought Bassett did a good job at point. Sll this team needs is time.

It's a Hoosier record. I don't know if Jay Edwards was in the big Ten, but Terry Hutchens said it Edwardss hold the national record. I think he would have broke it to if Coach didn't pull off with two minutes left ( I'm fine with decision though. We are not in it to set records, were here to win games).

I thought he was farther out. I agree with you about Gordon. At the beginning I was " Gor what the hell are you doing....uuuuuuuh nice shot". Though Big Dree did a great job, I would like him to go up with more authority for the easy layup. He missed a couple of those but that will change. I really think we will see great things. Of the higher ranked teams I think we have the most upside and we will many games.

I love Ebanks, and I think he's going to be great. I also think that Roth is going to be a very good deep threat for us. However after the Bud Mackey situation everything seemed to come falling down. I don't blame Sampson for Mackey, but I do blame Coach Sampson for losing Zeller and possibly Jones. I love coach, but in reality it was a pretty dumb thing to get involved in something you were already monitored for. That being said I still love my Coach, and I think he will get things rolling for the 09 class. With a great season I think he will show the studs of the 09 class that he is here to stay, and that he can coach in transition. There will be a limited amount of scholarships ( two I think), but I think Coach will focus primarily on Stephenson,Nolan Denis,Stephan Van Treese, or a center in which we figured we had no shot in at all.

Give me Ebanks over jones any day of the week. I don't think we try to attract any jucos, because they are not as talented as last year. Coach Sampson will just have to find a way to win 20 games without anyone else, so we could show we are a consistent winning program.

It's strange reallly. All this time we keep talking about how we want Indiana kids to stay at our program, but in the end I would not be surprised if a New Yorker restores us back to greatness. I think Ebanks has a lot of heart and I strongly believe he will stay for two years. With what I predict will be an awesome 09 class I really do think we will be a strong favorite to win a national championship by 09. To me it does not matter where you come from, if you have the heart like these kids do, you are always welcome to play at Indiana.

I know that if I gave my heart to my school and I'm booed I'd be preety bumbed out. You have to remember Lance is just a 21 year old kid. Imagine getting booed at a game and you have to go to class the next day wondering if people hate your guts because your not playing to par ( and believe me there are people who are like that. Even among the Hoosier faithfull). You give me a kid who plays hard ( and he is ), you never will hear me boo that individual, and if I was at the stadium ( because its the shy new yorker in me) I would have cursed out everyone who tried. If people do want take out frustration on someone do it to Kelvin Sampson. Our coach is an adult and he's used to it ( it's part of the job). I agree that Stemler did not play well, but leave to Coach Sampson to make the decision to bench him or not.

I never really liked Coach Knight socially but I remember the final time he played against Purdue. I had great seats behind the bench, and I remember the student section making fun of the Purdue center Brian Cardinal by say F.......k Cardinal. After a couple times, Coach Knight got up ran towards the student section, and told them ( in a coach knight type of way) " Hey Shut the F..K up, and leave the kid alone. He's just a F...king kid". The student section shut up, and a lesson was learned.
Anywho thats my opinion, and Ill leave it at that.

I think after a big ten season IU will learn how to rebound better. I'm more concerened about the development of Eli Holman because we are going to need another big body to take care front court heavy teams. He needs to make sure that people don't post on him too easily, and to be agresive when going for the boards or going up for a basket. I love Jordan Crawford and I don't know why people are saying he's inconsistent. If people are going to be focusing on just bassett and gordon, he will hurt you.

I'm getting annoyed how DJ and and big dre go waaaaaaaay beyond the arch to guard off the screen. That could hurt us if a team has an excellent guard and passes it down low to a wide open man. GOrdon is a beast but Armon is having a off game so far. Armon just went to the training room. I think he's cramping agiain. I hope it doesn't become a reacuring problem as the season moves forward.

yeah D.J White is not being aggresive enough. he shouldn't be losing the low post position so easily. Ellis is grinding it out and doing a good job on the boards, and fighting for baskets. I want to see Holman play more so he could improve. You can tell the kid has heart, and will get better. I'm already seeing better defense from him.

I'm really hurt by this game. Lets call a spade a spade. This is one of the most important basketball seasons in Indiana University history. This season will dictate weather we are a consistent top twenty program or a future national powerhouse for years to come. It's not fair to these kids that they should have that on their backs, but it's reality. With that in mind you think they would play with a sense urgency. I don't care if they lose, but just show me that you are trying your best. I saw they lacked heart and effort, and that really hurt me. I have no doubt that this team can beat anybody down the road, but wake up guys! You don't receive future awards by expecting wins, you win banners by earning them by working hard every single minute of the game. In the locker room they better think about who they want to become, and what its actually going to take to get there.

I'm hating how we think we have to be a one on one type offense. Like the movie " how many times are we going to pass. Five. what? Five!... Five!" the defense is getting a little bit better. I think we should paly zone sometimes until we solidify the man on man. I think this is D.J. White's best game. He was always assertive in this game. Out of all the teams that are higher ranked, I think we have the most upside. We will get better as the season goes forward. It's just going to be dificult to watch some games.

L. Rubes. They simply said " if eric gordon was on Georgia Tech they would have won this game". They also said that they were not impressed with the way Indiana was playing. Finally I did not like how they kept saying that in order to stop jamarcus ellis you have to let them shoot the three and not let him drive. I didn't like it because they were not consistently bashing other players from GT's team. I think ESPN is starting a bias against the big ten because of the big ten network ( which I really really love). I think its a travesty because in the end, it should be about basketball, not a stupid prapaganda campaign.

David, I agree with those comments, it's the others that I posted in my previous post that get me irked. I don't believe anyone mentioned that specific example as a reason why espn is biased. To me it comes down to this simple fact. ESPN wants to bash the big ten network because it will take more money away from them. Imagine if the big ten is succesfull, then the ACC and Sec will want their own channel, and take more money away from them. It's simple economics. Do anything to kill the competition.

Hey we stuck with them and thats all I can ask. We are not blocking out but you can see improvement on defense. Not much but you can tell they are learning. Of course the second half will determine much more, but I thought it would be much worse. That was an awesome block D.J. had, and gordon does not look like he's forcing shots. More passes to get an open shot.

much beter than Hornsby because he has a more fluid stroke. As far as lacking some athletic ability, I say leave him alone. He's a basketball player with a great iq. He and coach sampson will come up with ways to get open shots. Can you imagine how easy threes will come by with double screens, while teams having to deal with ebanks as well. I have to admit, I'm usually on Coach's side, but for the first time I questioned his coaching ability. At the same time I remember the team at UNC one year prior to winning the championship, they played exactly how the hoosiers are playing now. Too many one on ones, no screens, and at times lazy on a majority of possesions thinking that naturel talent will take over. I think this team has more senior leadership and thus can create a great run at the tourney. They just need to mature ( gordon, ellis, crawford, bassett, and thomas and look at the real world.

I just feel like I need to take some time off from our hoosiers. It hurt me to think that we weren't as good as advertised. It ticks me off that I have no one who cares in chapel hill, because it least I wouldn't feel like crap alone. I once thought this team could win the whole thing, but right now, I would be very happy with the sweet sixteen. This is the first time I have reservations about Coach Sampsons's coaching ability. The one thing that really annoys the living heck out of me is that we did not see a glimpse of a different offensive plan being carried out. I could understand that we lost while trying to incorporate a new offensive scheme ( aka picks on the paint so eric gordon could utilize his speed so he could an extra second to shoot the ball), but instead we saw the same exact crap for the wisconsin game. Every team in the nation knows how to play against us, and its a little to easy for them to figure us out. I originally thought that Coach Sampson was going to make this a great team.. If the defense was good as last year I wouldn't be worried, but its nowhere close. I loved coach ,but I'm going to be honest guys. I think he's on the hot seat if nothing big happens in the tournament. Also I don't like how he has an attitude problem with the media, and is always so upset and acts like a jerk when someone asks him about phonegate. I personally don't think phonegate itself is a big deal, but at the same time he put himself in that situation and he's going to have to learn to take it. I hope he can turn it around, and not be stubborn to stick with the same stupid game plan.

ok I'm going to say it. I think we should keep Kelvin Sampson until the end of the season. We can wait to the end of season and as soon as we win our lose in march we do the investigation. Oficially these are still allegations, and if we decide before the hearing we should be in the clear. Yeah I know he probably broke the rules but I don't like to assume. The McCarthy era assumed, I want a thourough investigation. I orginally wanted him gone oafter the news last week but I've changed my mind. For one these are phone calls, and personally I would rather have this, than a coach who chokes or belittle his players (at leaat until the end of the year). It will be fine which ever they decide but I'm tired of us not putting things into perspective, and thinking that phone calls are more severe than a coach being a bully ( a genius yes, but a bully none the less).I blame this on the national media as well for not making that connection ( except jay bilas).
One more thing isn't it bothering anybody that the ncaa is using these gestappo methods on us and bullying us around. I say that if we fire coach sampson and they still ban us for a year we sue the living f%@k out of them. They have no basis if we probably end his tenure before june. The kids love this coach and is entitled to at least finish this season.

man this has dragged to the point that if sampson goes, I want greenspan and 3/4 of trustees of IU to leave ASAP. We F*&cd ourselves over, by not being professional. Jay Bilas nailed this to a tee. We should have waited till the end of the season and thats it no point of discution. When you give the national media a deadline, we induce ourselves into more drama then is necesary. Oy vey. I love my hoosiers, but I long for better days.

I want Anthony Grant. Pure and simple. I believe he has enough knowledge at the defensive and offensive end to impress the whole the whole nation He is also a great recruiter ( aka the two time florida championship team). We get him we have ourselves a dynasty.
2. Sean Miller ( can give Matta a run for his money).
3. Bruce Pearl. (likeable guy).
4. Tony Bennet.

you raise a good point about the offensive part of his game, but I think that his defensive scheme creates a bunch of turnovers and therefore lead to the wild run and gun type of play.

I know he's not going to, but Eric Gordon should stay another year. To have better ball control, and learn to shot a jumper. That can make a diference from becoming a solid contributer to a star in the NBA.

I'm ok with this win. If you look at their offensive routes, they had a a ton of open looks. They were just not shooting it well. Your right, they will have to shoot much better than that against Michigan State, but you got to wait and see.

McCraken was a racist. Good coach, but he also lost us players like oscar robertson who could have given ucla a run for their money. Bottomline, each of our coaches had major problems.

you guys I live in Chapel Hill. This is torture for me. I know this sounds bad but I want them to lose in the first round. The torment I would recieve would be reiculous.
