But Nev - Do you think that forcing it upon people will help to educate them or help to create a "billboard" sort of ignoring about the topic? Surely forcibly pushing the topic at people insufferably is not the right way to do it? It's overkill and all it ends up doing is desensitising people to the real issue at hand. This is NOT criticism of the cause in any way, shape or form, it is a comment on the mechanisms being used to promote it.

Fred - I'm not sure I agree with you. A marginalised cause hasn't been put on the map, unfortunately it seems as though the mechanisms used to promote the campaign have been put on the map and punted across the board by bloggers and geeks alike. Not the cause. And I think it's a crying shame that this is what has happened.

This debate seems to be going on, the blogosphere seems to be pulling together and pulling apart at regular intervals here and lines are being drawn. Very interesting lines I might add.

I think that it is extremely interesting that Eric is attempting to launch his own blog aggregator, which has been "revamped" to a blog directory, which some have called a glorified blogroll (thank Uno). What I think is most interesting is that Eric in previous posts have accused local online startups and media companies of being lackluster and unoriginal, calling for fresh and international ideas to take SA in to the world when he openly states that he will be, "building our own blog aggregator - taking the best of what we see both internationally and locally."

Eric, Tell me how you starting a THIRD aggregator is showing initiative? What service will you possibly add? How do you figure that buying in to someone else's initiative is fresh, original and groundbreaking? I am not slating your enthusiasm, passion or your business prowess at all here. I just think that if you could, you would do these things without having to call openly for people to join you when, in fact, they could do it themselves and have.

Looking at Afrigator and Amatomu, these sites are local, lekker and brilliant produced locally. They let the product (website) speak for itself and that is what the SA online market needs, not necessarily money and "backing".

Just my two cents.

While back at the ranch you are producing a 3rd generation local copycat that you believe have already been copied from international sites. Paul: For sure, innovation on a global scale is the desired outcome of every project, if not, so be it. I also agree with anyone who says that SA online entrepreneurs and media peops can go big, really big, Eric you got that right. Anyone who says otherwise is smoking some of the good stuff. I am just saying that it takes an even playing field and much, much more than funding (which can come from anywhere or be earned alone I might add).

My review doesn't say that the ScanSnap is without Adobe V7. I mention that:

First off, good blog post. Respect for putting it out there. As Rich said, I have ample respect for you and what you do.

Vlad - I don't think that what I said was stupid at all. In fact, I think I have a valid point, if you look to Paul's archives they don't focus on Nokia, Over the past recent while Paul has focused immensely on Nokia driven content. He always goes to great extent to cover the fact that he isn't paid by Nokia or any other organisation he writes about but I would argue otherwise.

What is the retail price of a brand-spanking new Nokia N97 that only 4 people in SA have? I'll argue more than most bloggers earn via Google or Adgator in a year. That's paid content however which way you choose to look at it. Now let me stress that I don't think Paul is swayed by Nokia giving him things, it's just a very fine line to tread. Appearing as such or actually being such.

Paul - You raise a very interesting (and old) topic here, to blog or to "journ". There is a difference but again that line is becoming blurred. More and more people are googling answers to their questions. Mainstream journo's aren't covering gadgets as effectively as bloggers these days. How many of the Nokia's handed out were given to "partial" journalists? If none, why do you think not?

At the end of it all I think you write with passion and that, above all is the most important thing, but sometimes is pays to be partial, or as close to partial as possible.

I agree with Mike, there are tons of sites out there that ask for your time and I must say that I am a bit addicted to the networking thing. I have technorati accounts, digg, delicious, facebook, myspace, groovr, MBL amongst many others. I don't maintain many of them and am still trying to decide which ones are novelties and which ones have longevity.

Myspace is out, facebook a must. Groovr is a cellphone novelty, MBL is not and will work for a while. in general its a personal thing and you gotta be disciplined and make your choices!

I think that you are right, we dealt with the issue a few months ago but now the site is growing and it seems like users are becoming complacent about their role on muti.

Users need to get sticky and get involved. Don't let people muti thier own content, vote them down and make a point. Don't vote down others to get yourself ahead and don't use fake usernames. Simple. 3 rules.

I can't give you much advice as I am not a parent but I can tell you that I went under a few times before I was 5. Relatively (hehehe) I am perfectly fine although some may argue otherwise.

Had my tonsils removed at 3 and about 3 other surgeries and all went off without a hitch.

So I think that as warrented as your concern is, things will generally work out perfectly. If the doctors involved thought it would be a problem they would never suggest the surgery.

Have you been for a second opinion?

OK, so this sort of post has been coming, whether from you or someone else.

Firstly let me say that 1. I am stoked to be nominated for SA Rocks in two categories and 2. I wont comment on the Thoughtleader issue because both my nominations are in both of TL's categories.

So on to my thoughts:

I agree that transparency is essential to this sort of event/awards. I am not referring to transparency from organisers about things like their involvement. That's been handled well this year. I think it's important that people know what criteria the finalists were selected upon; most votes, most like by organisers/most this-that-or-the-next-thing. Whatever, just let us know.

Then I do think it's important that if you are willing to organise this event that you take ownership/responsibility of it. ie: make sure decisions are made, expressed and acted upon. Don't leave us in the lurch as users/readers/nominees/finalists. Talk to us, get all "web 2.0" on us. hehehe.

Groogle is right as far as I can tell and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I've said it before, blogging is egotistical and awards, by their very nature are ego-feeding. So what? Yes the prize is really a non-entity this year and yes there isn't alot of "esteem" attached to it in some eyes but you know what, i still like to be recognised, as I am sure the other finalists will agree. And in fact, I would really like to win at least one award and I will put that little badge on my blog if I do!

In the end, I think you've written a good post Justin. I agree with the judges issue, that is absurd especially when the awards are almost over. That needs to be rectified immediately by someone involved with the awards. And I'm glad you've posed some solutions and want to get involved. Hopefully it'll make the world of difference next year.

Oh - my last point and own point - Why the hell do we have 2007 awards 3 months in to 2008? Doesn't it make more sense to hold the 2008 awards (the ones for this year) at the end of this year closer to November than April of the following year? Just a thought.

Justin - what makes my comment so bad? The fact that I want to win? That's ridiculous. Why participate if you don't want to win. It's not SA Rocks's fault that the organisers didn't open the awards up to amagama, iblog and 24.com. that would've been brilliant as we have discussed before. I back that move 100%. I am not saying that it's right that the event is perceived as an elitist event, it's not right at all, but before we get in to that debate I'd like to know how many blogs received nominations in the first round. I think we'd be surprised.

And let's be honest we are all very heavily embedded in this elitist regime it appears. I must tell you SA Rocks readership is not the blogosphere as much as it is the average user commenting on a story they googled.

And it is nice to be recognised for your efforts. My comment on this is perfectly justifiable dude. If I'm nominated it's nice to win, ego in or ego out, people like to win stuff and be recognised by anyone anywhere at anytime. Ofcourse if the awards were more reputable with more entires and the like then it'd be better to win and to participate. But that's y we are having this debate i guess, to improve things.
