in Multi-core smartphones! (Not the iPhone, yet) on VentureBeat
"For proof of this, try running multiple apps in the background on a G1 Android-based phone — the battery life is awful, yes, even by iPhone standards."

First of all, this is not entirely true - it depends entirely upon the nature of the background applications you are running. Secondly - which situation would you rather have... One where YOU can decide how much you want your phone to do in the background and make the decision weighing battery life versus functionality - or one where you are not even given a choice but the decision is made for you because Steve Jobs knows that you would rather have your battery last 30 minutes longer than have your phone turn its ringer on or off automatically based on location or time while you have a Google Talk IM client running?

The android comment is really not true - properly designed background apps work just fine.

Anyone who wants to see the iPhone get better should be rooting for Android, Palm, etc - because Apple will certainly hold features back as long as they can (front facing camera? video conferencing? copy and paste? flash player?) when they don't feel competition breathing down their neck.

in How Flash Could Get on the IPhone [How Wired Could be Wrong] on GarthDB Blog
The only way I see it happening is if enough other phones get it that people start to laugh at the iPhone for not having it.

Until people decide to buy another phone over the iPhone because it has flash support, Apple doesn't really have to care about getting flash on it.

So... Lets get that Android version released, already and start the process rolling! :)

in Slides from 360|MAX Presentation (Cairngorm + ZendAMF) on GarthDB Blog
Have you looked at PureMVC at all? I've found PureMVC is a much nicer architecture than Cairngorm - in particlar Cairngorm has some architectural hacks that kind of violate basic software principles (i.e. they use their singletons like gigantic global variable pits, and then end up tightly coupling everything to your model locator) - PureMVC isn't perfect either, but it's a lot nicer in my experience.

You might also want to take a peek at the Prana project - which is basically a port of Java's Spring Framework to Actionscript (I heard a rumor that it will soon be picked up as an official Spring Source project - which will be a big deal) - but what it does is it gives you a nice XML file you can use to configure and wire together all of your objects - which makes certain use cases like swapping in delegates that serve static data for quick serverless testing or having it use real delegats - as simple as tweaking a few lines in the XML file and the complied swf doesn't care either way.

GarthDB Yeah, I've looked at PureMVC a lot more lately. I have been telling people to get into Cairngorm as their first micro architecture as it is used by Adobe Consulting and is universally more used in enterprise settings. SilvaFUG did a comparison and found PureMVC overall better, but that you should still learn Cairngorm - http://puremvc.org/content/view/43/98/
I'll have to look into the Prana project. Sounds really interesting.

in Redbox Top 10 DVD Rentals - June 2-8, 2008 on Inside Redbox
I don't understand how an exclusive rental agreement is enforceable. I can understand that they may give some kind of quantity price break to Blockbuster, but they can't legally keep anyone else from renting something.

It's called 'first sale doctrine'.

xxdesmus - IE7 is NOT 90% of the market share... IE6 maybe, but only a handful of people have installed IE7.

Just because YOU use it doesn't mean 90% of people use it.

in Redbox Update for June 6, 2006 - A good week ahead on Inside Redbox
In response to the question: Yes - TV Shows like Lost, 24, Alias... etc. would be watched a lot. Take out those crappy "Da Vinci Code" and "Flight 93" documentaries and get the real movies on there.

Also - RedBox has started to show you movies that are not released yet in the list of options. This pissed me off the first time I saw "Glory Road" and thought "Hmm... maybe I'll get that" - only there was no Rent button. I scanned the description and saw where it said the date it would be available...

Tonight I was in line, and three people in front of me were some girls getting extremely pissed off at the Pink Panther entry. They kept trying to hit it - and then hit "check out" to see if they could rent it... but no luck.

I'm going to email my rant to Redbox...

Oh - you need to add a login link next to the code history part. I have to manually type in the login URL whenever I want to add a code to my code history.

I think you should work on a way to add accounts to your site for reporting. You could make them optional - but I know I would love it if you could keep track of which codes I've already used... Although you would have to have the ability to let the user enter in a description of different cards that they have used them with (i.e. "Blue visa" - or "PayPal debit") because they might use the codes with different cards...

It would increase self-reporting of valid codes, and would make it much much easier to remember which ones I've used with which cards...

in Redbox - changing the dvd rental marketplace and more on Inside Redbox
Oh, one thought for the future... You might want to modify the PHP file that gives you the error that your database isn't being accessed properly to send you an email or something instead of just showing the warning... This would let you know sooner if something is going bonkers....

This post has a title that your mod-rewrite rules doesn't like... I think it's the "..." in it that might be causing it to go crazy... this means nobody will be able to comment on it unless they are crazy like me and manually find it using the PHP ?p=## command and find the correct post # (this one is post #17..)

I had to go to "http://www.insideredbox.com/index.php?p=17" to post this comment...

Good to see the codes are back up :)
