Interesting ideas, Dave? Who would fund these leaves of absence? We fund jury duty because law enforcement is recognized as a government function. A similar arrangement for newsgathering might come close to government licensing of the press, might it not?

dave You read way too much into what I wrote.

With that caveat -- I've done jury duty twice and was paid a few dollars a day. It didn't even cover expenses. When your country calls you're supposed to do your bit, and if it costs you -- too bad.

Volunteering for a campaign certainly works that way.

Well done. The one thing I would mention is that high fat diets are indeed related to cancer, but maybe you didn't mean that literally. Of course, the fact that decent grocery stores serving affordable fresh food are scarce in some neighborhoods is a key issue.

It's very good that you remind folks of the MFDP, particularly as the 40th anniversary of the murders of Schwerner, Goodman and Chaney approaches and the Democratic Convention follows right behind. I plan to do something on the subject later this summer. This was such a signal incident for all concerned. On the one hand, it gave rise to the Black Power Movement and the Black Panthers. One the other, it helped push such people as Bayard Rustin away from protest politics and into machine politics. (My own piece on Rustin is here:http://kpearson.faculty.tcnj.edu/Articles/bayard_rustin.htm. There is also, of course, the split that ensued in SNCC.

Don't apologize for blogging about the past. there is a lot about the Civil Rights era that we have yet to understand.
