in The religious right feels betrayed by Obama on AMERICAblog
Evangelicals didn't vote for Obama anyway. He did as well as Kerry did with them. It was one of the few demographics where Obama didn't improve over Kerry. They're not interested in compromise. They want him to bow to them.

JoyIA,
That's not a very good link. it's just more blather about how we're being lied to by the gubmint. Shadowstats.com? Really?
The way we calculate unemployment in the US is by the same way all other major developed economies do: Unemployment Rate = Unemployed Workers / Total Labor Force.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unemployment#Measu...
By the way, you only need to look at the U-4 number to include the discouraged workers.

"After a certain period of time, the government says you are no lomger looking for work, and are Dropped from U3."
This is not true. If you are looking for work, you are considered unemployed. The government doesn't drop people from the unemployment rolls after a certain period. I challenge you to produce the documentation explaining how/when the government considers people "no longer looking for work."

Steve, here's a good read and table showing U-3 and U-6.
...This chart shows our government figures (today) versus how they would show if we used methodologies we used to use when we actually told the truth to our people. So as you see below, the blue line is reality and shows a country struggling at elevated unemployment for a long time, but now it is spiking. The red line is what you are told and the mainstream media will talk about (U-3). The gray line is the broader measure of unemployment (U-6) which includes people with PART time jobs but WANT full time jobs. The blue line is reality - this is U-6 + "discouraged workers" aka people who have plain given up.
...Because the dirty secret about the American unemployment reports is that once people become discouraged and give up, after a short time frame they are no longer counted as unemployed. Period. They disappear into the ether. They are no longer "unemployed" - it's magic.

I doubt McCain remembers much about the economy when he was 5 years old. I'm not one to defend McCain, but criticizing him over this is a bit pedantic.

Good points. In fact, I think this is part of the reason why the Ayers attacks backfired on him.
Everyone knew that he was only doing it because he was behind in the polls, not because he truly thought it was a legitimate issue.

in The 2012 Campaign Has Already Begun on The Jed Report
I was going to say the same thing debrazza did. Just because Obama won't bring up all the skeletons in her enormous closet, doesn't mean the other Republican candidates won't.
Plus, I don't even think she's a viable candidate. First of all, she's already destroyed her brand. She has a lot of repairing to do if she wants to be a candidate in four years. Second, her positions are too extreme. She may give Rich Lowry a boner, but she won't attract enough of the middle to win.

in America’s Fascination with Itself on Almost Fearless
"I should have. It’s a valid complaint. In every country I visited, people knew who Obama and McCain were. Do you know the leaders of European countries? Italy? Ireland? The British Prime Minister?"
I don't think this is a valid complaint at all.
People in other countries know so much about the US because of its influence on global events--good or bad.
And what's the logic in saying that because Europeans can name the leaders of the US--one country--that Americans should be expected to name foreign leaders of all other countries.
I have nothing against Ireland. Hell, I'd love to visit there. But their politics have minimal impact on my life. This isn't grade school. I'm not going to memorize a list of foreign leaders just so I can say that I memorized their names.
Do you think most Europeans know who the President of Uruguay is? Probably not. Then again, why should they?

I think maybe this was the point of this whole charade.

Here's the rest of this quote: "Add those people to the roster of the unemployed, and the rate hit a record 12.5 percent in November, up 1.5 percentage points since September."
Here's the article
