i think this post just is a very long and complicated way of saying "nokia's connectivity UX sucks". and i agree 100%. no matter why, and for what reason, it's simply crap. period. (former N95, now proud iphone user)

fair enough ... the UX is definitely wrong but it seems because the thinking is focused on the way it was, not the way things have evolved.

yo. i have a MSI Wind with the first windows 7 beta and have not had any of the problems you describe ever. all MSI-specific funtion-keys (sound, brightness, sleep, turbo, etc) work flawlessly, incl. the network. must be a NC10/Windows 7 compatibility thing..

i don't see it that way. for me, it's an ad specifically targeted at technophile people (= in this context, the fast growing portion of smartphone and mobile internet users), who already know that 4G is not just around the corner, and who also recognize the pre without mentioning it (i mean, come on. the pre is/was all over the tech blogs and news paper tech columns for the last few months!). the guys who made this ad certainly didn't expect *grandma* to get that.. ;)
furthermore, i like the style and content of this ad very much! it combines statistical facts about their network with cute stuff like the dog @ :26 or the twitter birds. -> that's to catch the female geeks, and also to tell us "we are like you - we know what you do on the internet (social media, networks) and what you find cute and funny. which certainly worked for me.. (ok, i'm male, but a dog always works for me ;)
i'd give it a 9 out of 10!

technophiles = niche as this is running in mass media during prime time. too much is lost on the vast majority of people watching. Think they got a bit too cool for themselves here and are missing a massive opportunity to speak to a broader group. Not that the CEO speaking commercials were any better actually ...
Are you on sprint? Are you switching? For me the answers are no and no.

what do you use launchy for exactly? since vista you can start apps and docs just by pressing the windows-key and start typing...
Jonathan
The speed of launchy is better for me ... a quick alt+space and I'm in my app. The Win7 Windows Key search thing is great too though it takes longer to find an application. I've been using that to get into control panels or to search on the machine.

in What If Apple Announces Next iPhone With 5MP Camera and Keyboard - Death of Nokia N97? on The Nokia Blog
totally. if a new iphone with quality AF cam, video recording, multitasking for 3rd-party apps, and copy/paste comes out, the N97 will not be the only model with a serious problem.. the whole nokia smartphone department will break down another 30% easily.. (like it did already in 2008).

Afr, Thanks! I just happened to have all these review units sitting around. The daily news is also a good video testing platform.
It proved tougher than I'd expected. After I imported all the footage into iMovie 08, it was corrupting between between the different videos. I wound up moving the files into the N95-3, and using the video editor on it. The Nokia video editor can handle files that iMovie 08 couldn't.

couldn't agree more with the article. this constant 9-page scrolling just to find an app you want to run is currently my main annoyance with the iphone. steve, give us the option of folders and search!

excellent video :) love the objective discussions and comparison between resistive vs capacitive and symbian vs iphone/g1 etc. and yes, OLED _does_ use power of course, also for static pixels. it's LED technology after all. and LED = light emitting = power consumption. always.

Yup, I guess I noticed it too early! : ) Seriously, tho. I'm surprised that passed the usability testing stage. When I'm installing apps, I want to install APPS, not app, then app, then app...
Besides, this is a Nokia site. It's time to rail on Nokia's Download (dis)service. A good app store will totally convert new users to Nokia fans.

in Tough times. Tough decisions. on Loic Le Meur
loic, i like the idea behind seesmic and the transparent, creative and very entertaining way you have used so far to communicate and promote seesmic. many times i said to myself "that's the way i would like to do it if i were a CEO of a startup". so props for that!
however, what i constantly am amazed by is the obvious lack of skills and expertise of your technical team (or freelancers), that has lead to a technically imperfect and even annoying product, even after this long period of development time. i personally believe you have put your money on the wrong developers and engineers. how can it be that after such a long time, the flex client still has so massive shortcomings as the "session lost" bug? don't you see that such seemingly minor bugs puts off dozens people on a daily base, and finally even will turn away even the strongest supporters? do you really believe anyone is willing to re-logon every few minutes, just because you seem to have hired pretty incapable developers? similar can be said about the buggy mobile client. it's exactly those annoying details that people put off the fastest! at least this certainly is true for me..
don't understand me wrong, i don't want to be a troll - i just want to express my concerns why i believe it is quite obvious why seesmic is not where it could be as of now in terms of user base or new subscriptions. the first thing i would do if i were you is fire your CTO and developers. there are developers out there that could do it 10x better, in a 10th of the time. just my 2 cents.
still, i wish you all the best and hope seesmic will be successful in the long run. cheers, andres

hey, loic. sorry, my last post was a little bit grumpy - it was very late (4AM). but it seems that seesmic likes to bring half-finished products to the users, like it's already the case with the flex client. and you know how the community responses to all the bugs (usually badly). call me a perfectionist, but i don't like to waste my time with obvious bugs. must be a french attitude, hehe..;) and, yes, of course i have a SIM with data plan, and i'm also a years long symbian power user - so be sure that i know what i'm talking about. also, there are obviously other users with the same problem. example: http://www.seesmic.com/#/video/CRUHy4nmjc/watch
maybe you should include a pop-up in the client that says that only 3G is supported (for now). however, even 3G is not working for me to playback videos (i'm in switzerland). never had any other streaming problems for any other application. also, audio/video is not synchronized well, when recording (see http://www.seesmic.com/#/video/hszpKaZJTf/watch ).
having said that, it's certainly cool that seesmic invests in a symbian client! so props for that! cheers
ps: you don't know me, so i prefer to stay anonymous for internet privacy reasons

loic, this is nice, but the client is still full of bugs and shortcomings... why do a pilot and all if you don't then improve on the reported major bugs? i guess mike was too busy playing guitar instead of forwarding bugs to the developers, huh? ;)
- phone asks for access point on start, even if one is already set in the settings
- access point setting is not respected when opening videos. always wants to connect via 3G, when set to WLAN! (this is very bad news if one doesn't have a data plan..)
- default storage setting must be memory card (if available), not phone memory - or you will get a lot of trouble with crashing phones when the minuscule internal phone memory is full (already had this problem!)
- video playback doesn't work on my N95. "unable to establish network connection". (the phone is ok!)
- i strongly recommend to integrate an auto-update feature for the client, like QIK
cheers

the only thing i can say is, good luck with your next election, america. after 8 years of GWB, the USA has become the laughing stock of the world in so many ways.. it's not even funny anymore. believe me, NO COUNTRY on earth is taking the US seriously anymore. would you? looking from the outside?
the USA has declined to a hollow, corrupt, despotic war hungry country of idiots. and how can a country full of idiots vote for a new intelligent president? i'm afraid they wont.. goodbye USA. fix your own mess, before you come back and want "to lead the world" lol.
