I am half black and korean and my boyfriend is white and from a very conservative family. When we were just dating, people gave us odd stares in public and now that we have a child together, the stares are only prolonged and more evident. We will try very hard to enstill a positive self image and the notion that everyone is different and everybody has a little somethin\' somethin\' in them. I think that children never see skin color initially, its the ignorance of the parents that affects their view on others. Children don\'t know the words \"nigger\" or \"chink\" until their parents teach it to them, so I\'ve found to let my child just be for now.

Re: noodad » Should girls be allowed to play in boys Little League Baseball leagues?

Yes. Playboy is a part of life-it\'s a part of a boy\'s upbringing. Sure, I\'d let the kid have a Playboy...but I\'d draw the line at Hustler and Penthouse. I\'d keep him off the internet b/c 1)Hardcore porn and internet predators go kinda hand in hand when speaking of youngsters and 2) doesn\'t internet porn cost money?!? All joking aside, when the kid \"stumbles\" upon Playboy or any other porn I think that would be the perfect time to have \"THE TALK\" about not only where babies come from and sex...but respecting their bodies and the bodies and minds of the opposite (or same if they choose...again, another discussion) sex. I agree with the two above commenters...

Re: noodad » Hooray! I\'ve had to cover my mouth to muffle my motherly gasp-but we do nothing. We watch her closely at all times so chances are that when she does fall or bump into something it is very minor. I have found that when I have made a big fuss about a little injury it really scares her and makes her cry. Now she goes back to business as usual. When she cries upon impact with the floor/wall/doll/toy...I know she is hurt. I think that this method is teaching kids how to not be whiny...and if she really needs something I can give it to her rather than her \"crying wolf\" as she gets older.

Re: noodad » The Top 7 Babes in Children’s Television

Ok ladies, don\'t think that I forgot about you...being that I, myself, am a lady:
1)Bob the Builder-HELLO!?! And he\'s Latino-extra hotness.
3)Levar Burton-You know...he used to play the fella with the glasses on Star Trek now he\'s enriching the lives of children through literature. A man that reads for fun!?! Sign me up.
4)Man in the Yellow Hat from Curious George-I don\'t know what he does for a living. I don\'t know what\'s under that hat. I don\'t know why this man keeps a wild animal as a best friend but I DO know that the mystery of it all has me intrigued.
5 and 6)The Kratt Brothers from Zooboomafoo-super cute, super smart, and super excited about animals. Have you checked them out in their khaki shorts? Great legs and bum, right? Totally.
7)Dad/Harold Shrinks from George Shrinks-Yummm a musician and inventor...You know what they say about musicians, right? I don\'t know either. Bad words mean that they can be used to hurt someone else, regardless of what the user means, they make you look bad and tasteless, and the just sound freaking bad. As an adult of a very energetic toddler, I will let the d or f bomb slide from time to time but I never curse in public or use curse words against someone. While it may be cool these days to call your best girlfriend a \"bit*ch\", it\'s not cool, it\'s not cute. Crosby, Stills, and Nash said it best: \"teach your children well...\"
Please-it would be more impressive if children could learn a new word in place of a curse word.

Re: noodad » Is it Ok to Lie For Free Admission?

Do it. Dooo it. What\'s a couple of months? The kids don\'t have to see that you\'re slightly fibbing. Have the other parent divert their attention while you say, \"Oh, my daughter is four and my son is three...\" Theme parks are a pain in the stinking ass. The food sucks. The souvenirs are crap. Half the rides are usually shut down and the restrooms blow. They are usually overpriced for the amount of time you spend there with children under the age of needing a nap during the day-which is usually about two hours before a child has a breakdown. It\'s not like you\'re dressing your twelve year old child in diapers and carrying them to the gates and trying to lie to get them in. No one gets hurt here, folks...the kids can\'t hear what\'s going on so they don\'t learn any bad habits and the theme park is already raking in ridiculous amounts of dough...it\'s a win win for everyone! I\'m a petite girl and growing up with five other kids, my peeps milked that \"she\'s underage\" thing until I was 16. I was paying kids prices to the movies until I was 15. Sometimes, I can still order off of the kids menu at restaurants.
Ain\'t nothing wrong with this. The theme park man is gonna make his money back with that cheapo Nora the Excavator-Dora the Explorer knock off dolls and really cheap and ugly t-shirts and keychains.

Re: noodad » Is it Ok to Lie For Free Admission?

It doesn\'t really matter what I think of the park....my kid is gonna drag me there when she is old enough regardless...Just like I did to my parents and my parents did to their parents. Lots of times the workers called my folks out on this-I mean, I had zits and my brother began to sprout facial hair. BUT when you can slide, take the stinking slide. There is no use hating on my mad skills. I don\'t steal or lie or commit tax fraud-so taking small freebies when given is cool. If I found a twenty on the side of the street, I\'d try to find the owner. But if someone was giving me a twenty dollar ticket to a theme park for being underage-I\'m not going to argue. I\'m just trying to save some money.

Re: noodad » Is getting your baby’s ears pierced an act of child abuse?

Piercing ears is not abuse. For those of you who have had your ears pierced at a young age, you may agree with me.
I got my ears pierced when I was four. I was rewarded with a slushee. The slushee was all that I remember. When my folks did it, it was more of a cultural thing.
My parter is from a very American and very Conservative family. They think that ear piercings are a sign of adulthood and if a girl had her ears pierced too young she may be \"loose\" or wild or something.
This is something that is either cosmetic or cultural.
It\'s not that big of a deal for people to get heated over.
It\'s not abuse.
It\'s just a matter of personal parental choice.

Re: noodad » The Must-Have Toy Chase: Do Whatever it Takes or Avoid at All Costs?

I would totally say to wait until January. If every other kid on the block has the latest and greatest video game console, then your kid could just play with theirs. Toys don\'t measure the amount of love that you have for your children. If you even wait to December 26, your kid wouldn\'t really be missing out on anything. BE PREPARED suggests that you start a little tradition called the New Year\'s Panda. I\'d say that spanking is ok. Beating is not ok. I\'ve always read that the key is to discipline rather than punish. I guess what parents would want to achieve with the spanking is that what the child did was wrong and they want for the child to remember that their action was wrong. I would also say not to spank/discipline your child while you\'re angry or still upset. That makes it easy to take things a little too far and forget why you are spanking in the first place. Our plan to discipline our child is to try the \"naughty corner\" and if our child turns out to not be suitable for a \"naughty corner\" then we will spank our child, and afterwards we will have the serious discussion as to what the child did wrong, why it was wrong, and in effect, why they received the spanking.
Bottom line: spanking can be used as a tool for discipline. Beating is abuse and won\'t really teach your kids anything except for it\'s ok to lash out violently when angry.

Re: noodad » 10 Names That Would Get My Kid Beat Up

My father referred to all of my siblings and I as, \"Hey, one of y\'all come here!\"

But I have a friend named Dick Diamond. I\'d even go so far as to wait about four years, that way, you\'re not paying for college at the same time, they\'ll be at different grade levels so the teachers will forget about one hellion before it\'s sibling gets there, and you\'re not having to change diapers at double time. My mom had my sister and I 14 months apart-that means she got pregnant again when I was about five months old. There wasn\'t even time for the hemorrhoids to heal from the first baby before she got pregnant with the second.
Also, and my boyfriend calls this the \"evil genius theory\", before too long, the older of the siblings can babysit the younger 1 or 2. I think a simple party with some friends, cake, and ice cream is plenty. I honestly don\'t think that the kid will even remember or appreciate the huge party that you would give them.
My daughter is going to have two first birthday parties. Her grandmother wants to throw her one with all of her family and we are choosing to do a smaller, simpler one at our home with some friends and delicious food.
Our daughter isn\'t going to remember her first birthday parties let alone give a crap about some creppy clown making crappy balloon animals.

Re: noodad » When Should Kids Get a Cell Phone?

In a perfect world, I\'d let my kid have a cell phone when she started driving/dating...and that would be when I crawled into a hole and died...
BUT all joking aside, I\'d let her have a cell phone when she shows that she is responsible enough to have one...that comes around the same time that I am able to drop her and some friends off at the mall and places similar to that for a couple of hours. I\'d guess that would be around the middle school mark.
We\'d make it clear that certain calls and texting should never exceed a certain amount and the cellphones w/free night and weekends starting at seven would be an extra help in keeping the bill from stratosphere amounts.
However, is she were to go over her alloted minutes/amounts, we\'d take the phone away and she wouldn\'t get it back until she paid the excess that she put on the bill.
No cell...no go outtie with the friends.
Too bad so sad, shouldn\'t have crossed the line. I am not sure of the exact rule of thumb on this one...I only have one baby and she doesn\'t go to daycare, so I\'m not well versed in colds and stuff...she did recently catch a cold (that spread to me) from a cousin who does go to daycare...I never made it a priority to check the color of his snot, so I\'m still not sure about all of this. Why go through all the extra steps of cleaning and disinfecting a little plastic pot of poop and pee when you could have just flushed it in the first place?

There\'s nothing cooler to little kids than being able to use the \"Big Girl\" or \"Big Boy\" potty-add the toilet seat and step of their choice, some Baby/Kandoo wipes, and call it a day!

Re: noodad » Why You Shouldn’t Watch American Idol with a 4 Year Old

Paula was at her best dancing with that cartoon fox in the \"Opposites Attract\" video and you all know it.
That dancing fox was awesome.

American Idol represents what a lot of people are doing to their children...there\'s a lot of \"Me!
