As you've said, I'm sure startups and PR firms would welcome an experienced social media expert. I'm not sure it'll pay too well though. But if you're doing it for a good cause or if you truly believe in the brand/product/service, it would blend well.

I'm a social media marketer but I primarily use it for my own online properties... the payoff is a LOT higher over the long run and you don't have to work with irritating clients with enormous expectations (I've done consulting/linkbaiting work before.)

Alternatively, flying solo and working very closely and selectively with high quality/high priced clients is lucrative in many ways, although you'll have to really develop your personal brand/credentials/recommendation networks well from the onset.. :)

Re: Technorati Favorite Exchange

Thanks for participating in the exchange, Venu! Just discovered your excellent blog a few days ago and have been following it through my feed reader daily. Thanks for your thoughts on speedlinking.. I actually do enjoy reading link posts because of their brevity and usefulness. No matter how much I try to read, there always seems to be some super article I've missed or overlooked.

I also agree that adding more unique content or opinion to other the other blogger's post is a great way to add value for your audience. You might also get some new readers from the blog you quoted. :)

Re: Speed Linking Slow Linking

Hi! The feed reader doesn't have a chance to be wowed by aesthetic factors like site design or navigation, which can be a good or bad thing depending on the blog in question.

Looking at my feed just reminded me that I need to get the images properly aligned with the text. :)

Re: Linking Strategy – Link to Feeds

Very interesting link strategy which should be pretty effective if the blog in question has strong and impressive content. Having the link to the author (or scientist's website) may ensure that the specific Wikipedia page must kept up to date with author's official website. Many pages are structured using heavy quotes from the official website, which is seen as a definitive resource.

I'm sure any dedicated journalist would have been taught to 'always go to the source' when writing their news article. It's sorta like college essays, you might interpret the facts wrongly but resources exist for verification.

Wikipedia is also an open-community project: I've seen several pages go through many revamps because of neutrality issues. Many authors edit and argue about a specific page. This helps to somewhat reduce the likelihood of a complete blunder by one individual.

I'm just curious about the actual process of being widely accepted as a legitimate Wikipedia editor. Are there any specific requirements? Or does it result from in-group validation?

Re: Exactly Why Nofollow at Wikipedia is bad

Somehow I can't imagine the scenario occuring for two reasons:

As far as I know, each Wikipedia article about an event or personality contains a link to the official website. Hopefully readers from each of the blogs I tagged will intermingle among all of the blogs participating in the meme and some of them might decide to subscribe after reading the specific points stated by each blogger.

Yet another way to a massive subscriber list :)

Re: In Depth: Google BlogSearch | Ranking Blog Documents Patent

Andy, in your opinion what factors determine which blogs show up in the "Related Blogs" section when one does a search for a specific keyword phrase?

For example, when I do a search for make money online my blog shows up in the related posts section, alongside several others.

Re: In Depth: Google BlogSearch | Ranking Blog Documents Patent

In any case, my blog is no longer listed in the "Related Blogs" section. I'm personally not against the One Day of Silence day at all.. Lorelle has written beautifully about this subject, particularly about how silence is collective empathy/remembrance and is not just a passive way of dealing with the incident or the topic of violence.

Collective actions by a large number of participants can effect social change. The U.S. civil rights movement in the 1950s is a good example of what happens when groups of people share similar objectives and speak out at the same time. There's power in collective social behavior.

What would happen if everyone blogged about their personal experiences or thoughts on violence in that one day? I'm sure this would have a large impact on numerous blog readers or internet users out there. A permanent post on a blog can lasts for years and the act of sharing or the statement against violence extends indefinitely across the social conscience, at least on the internet.

I totally respect the One day of Silence movement but given an option I would rather have a one day of protest. But like I've said, it's just my pro-active personality and this has always been my way of dealing with stuff like that.

Re: One Day Blog Silence In Honor Of The Victims Of Virginia Tech

I understand what you mean, dan1el. Perhaps appreciate the site design, check out the monetization tactics, do some SEO digging, look at the sidebars, read some other posts etc. The more convenient the process, the less actual interaction is involved. It'll merely become a technical game if you just need one or two clicks to favorite 500 bloggers.

I guess the next step is to encourage all the bloggers to display the Favorites widget which shares posts from their favorites on their blog. I've been doing that since I started the experiment and honestly, it's received a lot of click throughs from me, especially if the headlines were interesting.

I'll mention the Tech faves widget when I make my post on the traffic results next week and I'm sure a lot of the participating bloggers will put it up, which will be all the better for everyone involved.

Re: Technorati Favorites – Is This Evil, Lazy or Just Smart?

I love the idea of build-your-own-aggregators/trackers and like you said Andy, it is a rather prime opportunity for more bloggers to be aware that there is such technology out there.

I still do however think that actual visitor traffic and interaction is most important, even though the ultimate goal (at least for me) was to break in and measure the traffic benefits of the Top 100.

The reason why I didn't put convenient 'Fave this blog' buttons next to each blog link in my post was because I wanted each person to head over and interact with the other blogger. Andy's technique does work! But Vlad, if you have the time, please do try to visit the blogs that favorite you, like check them out and say hi or something .. I'm sure they'll appreciate it :)

I've imported Andy, Gary, Garry and some other participating members' OPML in order to make sure that I don't miss out anyone.. Not referring to links between myself and the blogger who is participating in the exchange.

As you've probably noticed, many bloggers have started linking to other bloggers participating in the exchange, probably motivated by my practice in the post itself. This accounts for the increase in backlinks for most blogs participating in the exchange.

I did suggest that blogs could link to me to get a link back, but what I meant to say in my original comment is that if other bloggers want to participate in the exchange, they are not required to link to one another.

Thanks for subscribing to Dosh Dosh :)

Re: Blogging Productivity & Criticizing Goals

Thanks for the explanation, Paul.

Some clarification here: By 'interlinking', I am referring links between blogs participating in the experiment. Perhaps it is only limited to the meta-blogging or marketing or business niche. The number of subscribers you have definitely do not determine the repeat visitors, money or social news prominence for all types of blogs.

Let's take a few examples.

Celebrity blogs are traditionally weak when it comes to subscriber figures. Yet their repeat traffic dwarfs sites like Problogger, which may have a lot more subscribers. If you want to talk about income, they make more money too.

Social news prominence isn't really about subscribers too. If you are talking about Digg, Reddit or StumbleUpon (i.e. the social sites that matter) its mostly the same people submitting the same websites. How many times have you seen people like mklopez submit stuff from Download Squad and Lifehacker? Hundreds.

RSS subscribership has also nothing to do with SU traffic, particularly when it comes to humor sites. And then we'll have to take into account how big blogs go into cruise control once they reach a certain level of popularity. Social aggregators like Tailrank, Megite and Techmeme pounce and promote their material consistently.

If you are offering totally free content of high quality, you should expect a much higher subscription rate unless your conversion of traffic into subscribers totally sucks, and lets be honest, mine currently does, and there is a high chance your's does as well.

I would only say that content quality is highly subjective. What you see is top quality stuff might be infinitely boring or incomprehensible to others (not that I'm saying it is).

We know you can get more traffic or attention by writing specifically for a certain crowd. As you've mentioned before in an earlier article, you could possibly have gotten a higher subscription rate if you wrote for a wider audience instead of those interested in technical and detailed analysis on specific topics, although that is truly your selling point. :)

I like the idea of treating the entire blog as a huge proposition, to build a list of supporters but then again... its not entirely necessary for the factors you've listed (income, repeat traffic and social media traffic).

Re: Why Blogs Suck

Great post, Andy.

I don't see the correlation between lead acquisition as universal. Not really. Fun? A little. :)

Allenation.com recently had a short discussion about this and Allen suggested that the plugin was a comment-incentive which made commenters comment out of their own beneficial interest, instead of adding to the conversation.

I don't entirely agree with him but I feel what he means.

Re: Testing New Plugin to Reward Top Commentators

I've been getting a lot of updates since I subscribed to the comments for this post. Looks like it's working! :)

Anyway, I thought about it and agree with Andy Beard that NoFollow might be better instead of Top Commenters.

Why? Everyone gets a benefit not just the zealous commenters. Someone might write an excellent comment that sheds tremendous light on an issue but write much less or nothing on other posts.

You know, the usually silent but very deadly type of commenter?

Of course, if you choose to run both No Follow and Top Commenters..you'll have the best damn blog in the world. :)

Re: Our "Not-Made-For-Digg" Pledge

I actually don't mind reading Made-For-Digg posts if they are funny and well-written.

But I do appreciate your gesture of focusing on quality content instead of purely digg-friendly stuff.

Re: Google’s Lasnik Wishes "NoFollow Didn’t Exist"

Thanks for the tip.. now I know what to avoid when I start buying links. :)

Re: Blogs That Probably Aren’t in Your Reader But Should Be

Didn't hear of OneBox... thanks!

I love Blue Hat SEO. :)

Re: SponsoredReviews Enters Paid Blogging Arena

I think Andy Beard's great review style and personal ethics is an exception to the rule when it comes to paid posts.

I've read a thousand other blogs with crappy reviews and its apparent that they are just posting the designated links and anchor text in order to get paid.

As an advertiser, I think you really need to pick the right blogs and writers. Sure, I like to get Digg frontpages because it helps to spread an important message I believe in but that's not my no. 1 priority.

And I do know other Top 100 users who continue to submit whatever the hell they like even if it has a slim chance of hitting the frontpage.

I have also seen many Top 100 users shouting and supporting the stories of their friends, why would they do that if they were truly as competitive as you claim? Because competition is not as pathological as you think.

How you use social media depends on your frame of mind. If you are just in it to boost your ego, you'll look for ways to feed that even if there isn't a user-ranking list.

The kind of digg user you portray in your article is not the norm. And why not talk about people who thoroughly enjoy and love the competitiveness of digg?

Why spoil the party for them?

Re: Confessions and Reflections of a [Former] Digg Addict

btw, I NEVER suggested that there wasn't a huge element of competition involved. Read my comment and you'll know that I'm saying that it's there but you're exaggerating it by suggesting that it affects all digg users.

It doesn't, not at all.

I happen to be one of those users who enjoy the competitive atmosphere. I have never denied that. But I always look out for and support content that I like by sharing it.

Competition and enjoying/using Digg is not mutually exclusive.

Re: The Z-list: Are You On It Yet?

Thanks for spreading the Z List, Everton!

It's really becoming a monster. If your strong content is in the middle and end, full feeds will definitely be a great way to promote your post.

Some of my posts start slow but pickup with more heavy stuff so I like running full feeds. Don't want some readers to not click through just because the opening paragraphs or titles were not entirely interesting.

I think it also depends on your monetization goals. If you're heavily relying on contextual ads, you'll need readers on the blog, hence partial feeds will have to do.

If you're focusing on link selling, affiliate marketing and private advertising, I think it's more useful to run full feeds in the long run.

Re: Full Feed Or Partial Feed? What’s Your Flavour?

In my opinion your starting a post slow approach is bad as you only have a few seconds to get a busy and fickle reader’s attention

I totally understand that.. but what I meant about starting slow is that it presents a summary but doesn't go into detail on some of the finer points, which might be more relevant and interesting for readers.

That's probably one of the weaknesses for partial feeds. You can milk an short summary but there's only so much you can include. Sometimes, it's a specific hook within the body of the post that really grabs the user's attention and makes her go, 'I want to blog something about that!'.

If you only rely your titles and opening paragraphs, you're giving them an either /or option. Either click through and read more or just forget about the whole post. Sometimes readers are undecided and giving them more juicy content leads to greater clickthrough and link potential.

Partial feeds have only one shot with the summary. If it doesn't work, you've just lost an incoming link and reader for a specific post.

I personally seldom visit other blogs to read posts, because I do it all in the feed reader. Like many others, partial feeds can be very irritating because it's inefficient from the perspective of a feed reader. :)

Re: Success – I’ve Broken 1,000 Feed Subscribers!

That's awesome, Everton! I don't know why they chose sitewide anyway. It's not really recommended for SERPs and PR.

Oh ok .. I guess the plugin doesn't work that well. Just wondering, do you actually get people clicking on the square adsense ads you put at the beginning of every post?

Another thing. He's kinda like a mini-me version of Darren Rowse (at least for now).. :)

Re: How To Get On The Reddit Homepage

I actually prefer using Reddit over Digg but not everyone will take to it easily.

If you're starting out in Reddit, remember to submit as much as possible because it build up your editorial karma/power. Gaming it will be relatively easy if you have a large number of active Reddit users as your friends.

Re: Ashley Qualls – 17 Year Old Dot Com Millionaire

Thanks for the mention, Everton. I find that most 'make money online' blogs focus too much on just promoting advertising programs and far too little on long-term site building strategies.

The range of topics they cover is rather limited as well and only feature a cursory look at a topic in order to give them yet another opportunity to spit out a referral link.

Nothing really wrong with doing that, but I personally don't read blogs like that, nor do I find them helpful in any way.

Re: 10e20 Blog Update – Tamar Weinberg

I've enjoyed reading Tamar's posts on 10e20.. all the best for the new stint at Search Engine Roundtable!

Re: Reddit – Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About It

Michael.. try getting one or two friends to vote for your article to see if it shows up on the New page. If it still doesn't show up, I would suggest sending Reddit an email to ask why.

In the long run, it'll be good if you could add more Reddit users as your friends and do some networking so people will naturally feel inclined to vote for your stories.

Re: Alexa and Technorati Trade

Hi Gary,

Just favorited you. Click to Fave me

You might also want to know that there's a massive Technorati faves exchange going on over at my problem.
