in Tomash corner / Programmer is NOT a Poet on Tomash Corner
Actually, credit for the idea goes to the master project manager, Fred Brooks, who said it in his book on software engineering, The Mythical Man Month. During my talks on the subject, I typically quote his paragraph that starts "Programmers, like poets, ..."

You talk about being pissed at Microsoft because, having made a bet in the 90s, you're now stuck with two Windows boxes.
Is this not the same situation?

I had hoped, when making the bet, to be transported into the future by Microsoft's self-interest.
Not sure in what way you think this is the same situation. Google is like Microsoft, a platform vendor, that could, if they're not smart, drive their own platform down a path that isn't lucrative.
I think it's more likely that Google will shed key pieces of their platform into open source to give developers more incentive to invest. I've been listening to them and watching them, and have formed this opinion, but it's just an opinion. It could be wrong. But I will continue to watch, and gauge my own investment accordingly.
I've already made a very substantial investment in Amazon and I don't plan to abandon that. It has the advantage of working with my software (the OPML Editor) where Google's does not and unless they radically change it, can't.
This is what we developers love - a two-party system with two very real very serious players with different approaches. There's room a few more, but the more compatibility the better for everyone, imho.
Maybe this is the beginning of tomorrow's piece. :-)

in Zed Shaw - Exposing the ‘Ghetto’ on The Puerto Rican Rails Dude
For what it's worth, my memory of the incident was that Zed popped up in rails-core Campfire at the time of a known security hole (I think it was in CGI.rb). Koz and I suggested delaying announcing it until Matz had a chance to fix it. There was some discussion on how long Matz had already known about it. Then Zed left the chat.
It would be instructive to consider just how either Koz or myself could possibly threaten Zed–he doesn't seem like someone who would be threatened by anything :)
Either way, I'm sorry he's leaving the comminity: his energy and style added to it.

thanks for clarifying this one.
I read "Mythical Man Month" and don't remember the "programmers, like poets,..." piece -- got to re-read that. I do remember you comparing programmers to poets from videos of your talks, though, and that's what moved me (as you can see from the above post).
