in Thursday Stories: A Fairytale of Sorts on Kim Werker Blog
Once upon a time, almost 33 years ago, a very happy woman became a mother who is now so proud of this woman who always knows her own mind and is brave and confident enough to follow her intuition when it tells her to value current friends, make new ones, and embrace all the turns in the road of life!

in Literary Genres and Gender: Discuss! on Kim Werker Blog
My concern with the tiny niche of chick lit -or any other niche- is that it is dominated by market analysis. Chick lit seems to be aimed at grown-up women who loved "The Babysitters' Club books when they were budding adolecents and who are presumed never to have become more sophisticated readers. Years ago I read an interview with the T.B.C. author, herself a Scholastic, Inc. editor. I was appalled to learn that she set her alarm early each morning to write for exactly 2 hours before another alarm tells her to get ready to go to work; so much for inspiration and creativity. These books are really "fill in the blanks" with appropriate sterotypical characters and plot.

It looks so true to the book. I love that you treasure the book and the memories. I still use it now with students in my college literacy class, and they sigh happily remembering their own connection to it.

in Colin Powell Goes Beyond Just Endorsing Obama on Kim Werker Blog
I am so proud to be your mother! And, I guess we did something right. As the song from South Pacific says, "you have to be carefully taught" to hate. And you were carefully taught to judge people by their actions, not their race or religion.

I sat and cheered as Colin Powell made his endorsement, and am thrilled that other intelligent Republicans are now endorsing Obama because they are ashamed of the actions of their party leaders. So, let us remember that there are many upstanding people of both parties who do not believe that people with differing opinions or differing beliefs are to be labeled as "Unamerican"! Just witness the Congressional race in Minnesota where the unknown Democratic challenger has raised over $1 million this past weekend after the incumbant make those ludicrous statements on Friday's edition of Chris Matthews show, Hardball, on MSNBC.

in Nobody Is Pro-Abortion on Kim Werker Blog
If the "pro-life" people would actually take the time to listen to any woman who faced the necessity of deciding to have an abortion they would know the anguish it takes - and continues to take - on the woman and on those who are privy to the decision-making process. HEALTH is always an issue - not an excuse - be it mental health or physical health. And at odd moments throughtout that woman's life she will wonder about that child who almost was.

I wonder how John McCain would react if others viewed his war wounds as fictional health issues that can be used as an excuse not to raise his arms.

All I know is I saw RED when he made that "health" comment last night. And if any woman thinks that because he chose a female running mate he understands or supports women, they deserve to have him decide their fate!!!

in » Shaking the Caffeine Monkey Off My Back on Kim Werker Blog
I am very proud of you - as a 2-cup-a-day person, I know this is hard. I have always limited my day's caffeine to 2 cups of coffee at breakfast. After thatm no caffeine wither in soft drinks or tea. My mid-day and evening treat is herbal tea which I find to be very relaxing and refreshing. And, as you know, even when under heavy stress, I have never had high blood pressure or palpitations.

Activist daughter of mine: Fight for what is right.
Notify Apple of the obvious lack of equal treatment being afforded to their potential Canadian consumers. I assume that Apple has entered a contract agreement with Rogers and would not wish to have their international sales suffer as a result of this pricing.

All of you need to keep this issue in mind when you laugh at your parents' old pictures. Somehow tie-dye and bellbottoms have returned to fashion, so maybe in 40 years these glasses will as well.
