in Intraday Tactics for St Patrick’s Day 09 on Afraid to Trade Blog
I too noticed the shooting star from the prior day which led me to believe in the H & S forming. I usually don't use candlesticks much, but does a negated shooting star suggest the ST trend up has some legs?

Thanks for posting your insights.

in A Weekly Chart Look at the 1987 Market Crash on Afraid to Trade Blog
Cory,

Just trying to get an better feel for EW.... Is there a rule or principle that prevents wave 3 of 4 (SPX 300, Apr 87)) from being interpreted as a larger wave 5? The skeptic in me is saying that it's called 3 of 4 because we have the benefit of hindsight knowing that the top occurs later. What quides a technician otherwise?

in A Trend Day Down Full of Bear Flags on Afraid to Trade Blog
Cory,

I posted a Dollar Index chart which I believe will have implications for the market - particularly commodity related stocks. www.speculativemeasures.com

I see you've mentioned Constance Brown a few times, along with your references to confluence. I read her book a few weeks ago and still haven't made up my mind on her application of Fibonacci's for price projections (vs merely retracements). I'd love to here more of your experiences with it.

PS still can't get anything but Bollinger band "Lines" to appear on stockcharts. I've concluded you must not be using the free charts, for I do not see where there are any settings affecting how it is displayed.

1998 Lafon Rochet 1999 Brane Cantenac Both wines were closed at the start, even after a couple hours of decanting. They really opened up nicely over the course of the evening, although I think most people enjoyed the Tresor better. I'm looking forward to our next get together and hope Gabriella is along this time!

in Nashua Telegraph Blogs on Raising Athletes

I have played and coached at every level of amateur baseball. I've enjoyed playing with some great players and I've both enjoyed and not enjoyed coaching young baseball players. I've enjoyed coaching those players who genuinely enjoy the many extra months of a focus on "baseball only". For those athletes I think the opportunity to continue playing baseball beyond the usual baseball season is great. I have however coached many young athletes who would much rather be enjoying participation in another sport once the usual baseball season is over but are pressured to focus on baseball pretty much year round by either a parent, a coach or both. They are often told that without this focus on one specific sport only they will never make the high school or legion team. Often times they have been pressured by an otherwise well-meaning parent to remain focused on the one sport while that parent is pretty much unaware they themselves are the ones enjoying that intense focus on baseball for example, something they were probably not skilled enough to do when they were the age of their child. My point is, as parents I think we should all pay special attention to who is the one really enjoying this year round focus on one sport. Sometimes our own enthusiasm puts our kid on a baseball field in October when he or she may rather be playing football in the fall. I love almost all sports. Even in these times, as a coach, I've seen many young athletes succeed in both football and baseball at the high school level and baseball at the Legion and college level when they did not maintain a single-minded focus on baseball alone while coming up through the ranks. In my opinion it is important to be a well rounded athlete especially as a young person so that you don't run the risk of losing interest in potentially all sports due to burnout in one.

in Premiership Preview–18. West Bromwich Albion on EPL Talk
To compare West Brom to the Premiership teams you need only look back as far as the FA cup semi final when WBA were by far the better team and lost onlyto a dubious goal that came from an obvious hand ball. The fact that WBA held their own against the eventual winners and high fininshing Pompey proves they have the ability. Losing Gera was a loss, Philips not so much, but they have been replaced and the defence, West Brom's weak point last year, strengthened. Watch out for some shocks from the Albion, thats my prediction.

in A Belem Lunch with a Portuguese White Wine on Catavino
Welcome aboard! Without trying to stereotype, I would say that your comment about "people being turned off" by a whole fish can be applied readily to Americans. In general Europeans are more open to this kind of presentation, and it isn't limited to whole fish. We Americans (stereotypically) don't want to be reminded that the protein on our plates was once a living, breathing being. Personally, I believe that presenting the whole fish, or suckling pig, etc., etc., actually honors the being we are consuming, in addition to the other benefits you mention. We are acknowledging it's existance. Maybe that's weird, but that's how I feel about it.

in Science of Smell - Can wine critique really be “objective” on Catavino
You have successfully explained why wine rating by the "professionals" is done in a "sterile setting" and done blind. They are seeking the highest level of objectivity they can find within the subjective framework of our human senses. Another way for consumers to mitigate the personal preferences of tasters is to try multiple wines being rated by different publications. With Parker or Opaz, you're getting a single person's opinion on a wine. With The Wine Spectator, you are getting a blended score from multiple tasters. One is not inherently superior to the other. The goal is to find the palate(s) that consistently provide you with a good wine experience, should you so choose to use outside assistance.

in Why Should Readers Care about the European Wine Blogger Conference? on Catavino
Ryan, I think your round table topics are directly linked to improving the "wine blog" experience. If there is a way to get consensus on wine rating, at least within the 40 or so Euro-bloggers attending the event, you will have accomplished something. I'm impressed with the amount of effort and thought that has gone into the conference. You and your fellow conference planners deserve a round of . . . take your pick. No further questions. Bill

in Why Should Readers Care about the European Wine Blogger Conference? on Catavino
Ryan, Does the EWBC matter to our (Catavino) readers, and why should they care? Additionally, Will getting European Bloggers together for a conference make any difference? Interesting questions posed to your readers. I'm going to turn it around and ask a few of my own. Why was the EWBC proposed in the first place? What are the goals of the conference (is there a mission statement, for example)? Do any of the goals of the conference relate to the audience? How will those goals translate into action plans? If there are no goals related to the audience, should you create some? You are the ones attempting to create (and expand) demand (i.e. people reading your blogs). You should be telling us why we should care. How is the conference is going improve the experience for the audience? Personally, I believe it does matter. Whether anyone thinks about it, much less caring about it, depends on the bloggers. That be you. BB

in Julie Foudy: You Are ESPN’s Weakest Link, Goodbye! on EPL Talk
I can't say she's the weakest link. My problem, and it's probably shared with a lot of hard core American fans, but still my problem, is that I'm thoroughly anglicized in all of my conceptual thinking about the game, and when she talks about soccer in American terms ("go ball", "offensive zone", etc), it grates. But she's not unique in that respect, and certainly not the worst.
