I love this kind of case study. I'll talk to the other engineers at bit.ly and see if we can do a similar case study across a day's worth of bit.ly links to get a more significant sample size and post results back here if we can mine this data.

How did you find working with the android SDK? Easier than objective c?

So have you played with building anything for android yet? Easy to work with the SDK?

Are you going to try switching to the Android phone as a primary device for a weeklong test run or anything? Would love to grab it from you when you are done and try it for a week. Will contribute to the cost of the phone, too.

Spot on--twitter is quite similar to the away message of yore. I think the reason a lot of people don't get twitter is that it takes quite a bit of work on the user's part to make it valuable. That is, with twitter, you really need to expend a bit of energy finding people to connect with and giving it a go before you start to see the benefits.

I would guess there's a good chance that twitter will not even be the dominant innovator in their space--there's still lots of room for someone to come in, learn from twitter's mistakes, and do things better.

Snackfeed is on the right track and in a killer market for innovation. Looking forward to seeing the next evolution of the service..

The olympics was my first experience with silverlight as well, and I agree that it's horrible compared to flash. None of the video buffered properly, making almost all of the videos unwatchable on anything but the fastest connection.

I'm also in your camp re: opinion of Microsoft--I personally think they're a solid company that people make ungrounded criticisms of, but most of their web plays have been failures. One thing I have to complement them for, though, is http://photosynth.net/

You guys should make a quick FAQ or Help doc. I don't think people will easily find the right-click-context-menu, which, personally, is the feature I have ended up using the most.

Ah, sweet, the clicking-on-check-box-event-bubbling issue is fixed--nice! Now that that issue is resolved, I think I'll be using this a lot more. Funny how something small like that can prevent me from using an app.

top todos: reply & direct message. Once that stuff is in, this will beat twhirl and the other clients IMO. Brand managers, PR people, and customer service don't need fancy stuff like photo/video sharing via twitter. They just need a dashboard like this and an easy way to communicate with clients.

Having made the switch from Desktop software / imap to Google Apps for domain, I'm pretty excited to outsource my deployment woes to Google.

Remember when everyone was scared about Google placing ads based on the content of their emails? Gmail alleviated so many headaches that we stopped caring about our initial gripes.

I think appengine will have a similar adoption rate, but I plan to be on the forefront of it, cutting my costs and increasing my bottom line by using their awesome deployment / scaling service.

Personal outsourcing: one of the simplest examples I can think of that has been totally worthwhile is the Wash and Fold. I discovered the joy of wash and fold about a year and a half ago when I moved to an apartment that had no washer and dryer. I was looking for a laundromat and discovered a place where I could drop off my clothes in the morning and pick them up in the evening washed and folded. I have never washed my clothes since.

I spend about $10-$12 a week on wash and fold, as opposed to about $6-$7 I would spend on using quarters and doing it myself; the time I save by not having to fold my clothes makes this fully worth while.

I have friends who still say to me "I can't believe you spend that much on laundry." They just can't grasp the concept of opportunity cost or understand that I value my time enough that I'll gladly pay for someone to do something as boring as folding clothes.
