in 25 Questions to Ask During an Information Security Interview on danielmiessler.com | grep understandingMy favorite question is "Prove to me you can protect my network". Poor candidates begin speaking about technology and solutions, good candidates talk about their previous experience, and great candidates take a high level view of the issue and speak about how they will help promote change, get management on board and begin to address the true scope of this open ended question.

in Jujitsu Update [November 2008] on dmiessler.com | grep understandingI'd love to do the Jujitsu thing more often, but time is killing me. I've been in traditional martial arts the last 2.5 years and taking an MMA class for the last 2. I hear ya. We bring in specialists into MMA so that's the only Jujitsu I get but it's good stuff. We just had Steve Maxwell visit for a few weeks and he was amazing. My key to it all it not doing it back to back during the week. I need at least 24 hours if not 48 between sessions or I'm just cruising for a bruising....course I'm over 40 now. :) So you into BJJ or what?

in The Sad Irony of Who Voted For Prop 8 on dmiessler.com | grep understandingDon't fret...I'm sure the new Democratic administration will remove the current Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003 and reinstate the Marriage penalty so married people will end up paying more taxes to support the continued unbalanced budget. Then all married couples and civil unions will be treated equally. Oops...was that out loud?!!??!

in This Election Has Made Me More Liberal on dmiessler.com | grep understandingDon't think of it completely as adding more freedom....that can be a gradual process. Think of it as moving the responsibility from the Federal level to the State level. This is the heart of the governing Libertarian approach. Break the problem down into pieces to be dealt with locally. That way there are multiple solutions to the same problems so that they can all be vetted and the best solution will bubble up to the top. I completely agree what we are doing now isn't working...continuing on this path won't work....surrendering ideals and returning to other paths already shown to fail won't work either. If you want an omelette you gotta break some eggs....
In the end...we need to hold people accountable and make them take personal responsibility. That's what has been missing for the last 20 years. Stop the bailouts, stop the handouts start using the laws that are already on the books.

in This Election Has Made Me More Liberal on danielmiessler.com | grep understandingThe phrase "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" comes to mind reading your post. Rejecting your beliefs in libertarianism because you can't trust your fellow American is a dangerous road. You might as well put the training wheels on and require a test before voting to make sure only those that are smart enough can vote. You are bargaining freedom and liberty just so we can "get by" and head in the right direction. This is fundamentally a flawed way of thinking because we are human. You are setting up a circumstance where corruption will breed at the top of the scale. It won't be long before these efforts evolve into the mentality of "just pay your taxes and trust us...we know what's best for you stupid folks who shouldn't be voting or have a voice anyhow"... You sir, are playing with fire.

in McCain/Palin Supporters Dissected on dmiessler.com | grep understandingI'm a Libertarian so I didn't support McCain or Palin and I agree with you on most of your points. However, I'd disagree that Democrats sat silently by through this election with their hands in the lap when McCain's name came up. In my travels I've never seen such rude, overwhelming negative and downright asshats as the Democrats. I'm in the midwest which is highly conservative and here you do get a couple jeers from the right but not to the extreme as I've been from the left. I've seen people pushed, sworn at and even given the finger just for wearing a McCain button. I've never been ashamed to be an American...but I've been ashamed at how biting the left can be. I congratulate Obama on his win and am proud of the nation for looking past race. It's just so sad that we keep electing people because they are the lessor of two evils and not because we genuinely agree with their stance on issues. That's why I voted 3rd party this year and for the first time in decades I feel good about the choice I made.

in What Counts As “Criminal” Speech? on The Technology Liberation Front
The scrambled content could be rated as to reason -- language, sex, violence, etc., and the box could selectively descramble. This would be the perfect solution for adults -- they would just switch the box on all the way, and get uncensored content. And if they turn off the box, the TV is safe for the kiddies (if boring!)
Do you suppose a government would ever take this approach?
