in PLAYING ‘THE DE-CRYING GAME’ IN THE WETLANDS on The District Weekly
Mike,
Thank you very much.
As much as I appreciate the District Weekly, I hope you have contacted the LA Times with the emails. This is a story that belongs alongside South Gate, Carson and other cities with shady dealings. Not only for entertainment value, but to have a positive effect, which it would.

I have to second that; but I suspect that most intelligent readers are "on" to the degradation and growing irrelevance of the press-telegram. Everybody I speak to acknowledges that.

Meanwhile, hats off to hitchcock et al for their minimally disruptive (could have been a lot worse) actions which have stirred up the hornets nest. Great publicity for a great cause. I'm all for contributing some soccer balls to their league in thanks.

in SCHIPSKE CALLS ON MAYOR AND COUNCIL TO REVISIT WETLANDS DEAL on The District Weekly
There are a lot of good, no GREAT, city employees. Always has been, at least going back over 40 years in my case.
The problem with Long Beach (and the LBUSD) is when the top administration gets to the money deals, it's the good 'ol boys network. It's always been people like prevratil, dean, pook, feinberg etc. It's institutionalized culture, I'm afraid, that must be changed.

Poor Gerrie, she's making some powerful enemies. And Grabinski thought the IPT was hard on him.

I mean really, no appraisal, no soil studies, no required revenue allocation; where else in the world would that be allowed to take place?

No Name There are many great city employees who are totally taken for granted. The vast majority of whom are not in the "hundred thousand club," AND are not even paid MARKET RATE compared to other cities. These dedicated employees are also getting dirt kicked in their faces BY BEING FURLOUGHED while the muckity mucks are making this enormous gift of public funds to their golfing buddies. Hundreds of thousands (likely millions) of dollars will need to be spent to relocate the public service yard and to remediate the pollution that exists there for this wealthy developer who WILL DO NOTHING to remediate the site that he is trading but who WILL retain lucrative mineral rights.

in RESULTS OF SCHIPSKE’S POLL ON CURRENT EVENTS on The District Weekly
Gerrie is doing a great job, for the most part. She is, however, finding out just how hard it is to fight city hall. More should support her because large resident involvement is the only thing that gets attention and action.

in P-T REPORTING STAFF GETTING DECIMATED-ER BY MORE LAYOFFS TODAY on The District Weekly
Kris I am sorry I stopped subscribing to the tele-rag for the sole reason of the effect on fine reporters like you. I am sick of what that maggot has done to our fine newspaper.

If hennessey writes another silly scrotum-polishing story that's published this week I think I'll have a heart attack!

in MORE CRUEL CUTS AT THE PRESS-TELEGRAM, AND IT’S GONNA GET CRUELER on The District Weekly
I dumped the tele-rag a year ago in disgust, and there's not much on their internet site worth reading; a few minutes a day spent at most. I gave up an almost 50 year habit. My brother used to deliver the Independent going back when Stearns was a dirt road. It's truly sad.

Do like I do, and subscribe to the LA Times. The tele-rag, regardless of the fine employees whom are left, is not worthy of our support.

in MAYOR FOSTER TO CITY: “LET’S TALK” on The District Weekly
What's this lady on? Flowing some good ideas? I'd laugh if it weren't so sad. It's always been a one-way conversation around here, at least from my 50+ years experience in wrong beach. Mayor Foster IS an improvement over the previous ones, though.

I will say I commend Mayor Foster for keeping the shameless unionboss randy gordons hands out of the city till for this year's State of the City address. Too bad for us that knabe is also shameless for bending over as carpetbagger randy grubbily picks his state of the county address pockets.

jeanine said:
"Mike, attitude is everything. I suspect it's your approach Mr. Foster doesn't like. I already know your background as I've been a faithful District reader since its inception, and I've lived in LB and worked in LB for 20+ years.
Why don't you get constructive and start flowing some good ideas for improvements his way rather than denigrate his efforts?
It's something I practice with my kids: positive redirection-- why not try it?"
jeanine I'll definitely agree that ideas haven't been well received in the past, but he does appear to be asking for them now.

...And I will assume you are merely using light hearted teasing when you imply I must be on something to be encouraging everyone to have a positive attitude, so no offense taken.

I didn't support Measure I, and I am as tired as the "good 'ol boy-politics as usual" as all of you-- but there does come a point in time when we need to stop complaining and decide what we are going to do. I think apathy in the community is one of our biggest problems. I worked as an election worker in the June election and less than 15% of the voters at that poll voted--this means the council person for that district was selected by less than 15% of the people! Our biggest problem is to get our citizens off their couches and into the community-they need to start absolutely barraging the mayor with their ideas.

in HOTEL WORKERS VS. THE HOSPITALITY ALLIANCE: SOME OF THE NUMBERS on The District Weekly
These employers, and their spokeshole, are just wal-mart lite. I am tired of paying for these despicable companies employees healthcare, and I am tired of paying for their public assistance.

These employees have few options, and I say they are exploited.

I hope the chamber union and its' slickster don't get involved, as it will be squashed all over again. That guy is one hell of a unionboss. He puts the prison guards unionboss to shame!

Why would there even be a vote if change was mandatory, and even having one vote how in the hell do you justify another?
I bet all the BS businesses belong to the chamber, and the wizard of oz is behind the curtain pulling all the strings and levers.
How discouraging, disappointing, and despicable!

in PAIN IN THE ASPHALT | The District Weekly on The District Weekly
Wow! Expect an onslaught from the (spoiled brat) commissioner(s)/landlord(s). Busted with both hands on the teats!

I bet the chamber awards them this year for "best corporate welfare."

Look, second street, even going back to pre-earthquake days, was always a "cool" place to go, and there was always an abundance of successful establishments to take your money.

(Certain whorish carpetbaggers wouldn't know this).

See # 48 above, specifically "minimal private sector investment"; didn't randy and his cartel of commerce finally once gift (not voluntarily) $15,000 out of the $165,000 they always netted from bev's annual okie-doke that she gifted them? What generous, fair, civic-minded citizens!

It's a shame that the relationship is what it is, but as I see it Mike is being totally dissed and trashed for having the audacity to disagree with the business interests. He stands his ground, and I appreciate it. We need to strike a fair balance. Fact is, though, Mike won't be getting any free dinners from Geno anytime soon

in MAYOR ON LOOKOUT FOR CONFLICT-OF-INTEREST IN BELMONT SHORE BOND | The District Weekly on The District Weekly
"Councilman DeLong also supported Commissioner Lorbeer’s receipt of a permanent (not 1 year temporary) entertainment license for his property, contrary to the recommendation of the police and the outcry from local residents opposed to the crime, noise and bar fights already existing".

Mike, I work in the port, and when I worked nights for a few months I'd come home down 2nd Street around 1-2:30 am. You would be amazed at all the fist fights I saw, and the weird sh*t, not to mention the rowdy behaviour of the young inebriates. You'd think there would be a requirement for the bars to have some (or more?) security. It's not a safe place, and I sure am glad I don't live close to the Street.

Good ol' wrong beach, if you don't get the vote right the first time then keep doing it until you get it right.
That mahood is sure arrogant. Could someone please tell her she doesn't own the city.
Belmont Shore residents owe a great deal of thanks to Mike Ruehle and Jm McCabe.
