I had to go with no drug prohibition because the black market kills people, and welfare just makes 'em dependent.

in The Shame of Ron Paul on Will Wilkinson
As a relative newcomer to the libertarian movement and a grad student at San Jose State who has some friends who have attended events at the Mises Institute and have read pieces there that I highly approved of, it seemed preposterous to me that allegations I've heard about the Mises Institute were true.

But I've done some more reading about the paleolibertarians. I also sent an e-mail to a list including all the econ faculty here asking about those allegations and haven't heard anything back. So I'm beginning to think you might be right.

I dunno. The Kirchick piece was a lot of innuendo and guilt by association using mischaracterization of groups. Rather ironic that Kirchick writes for The New Republic.

The Mises Institute as neo-confederate? Obviously, you can support secession without supporting slavery, and for libertarians living in a two-party democracy, secession is a valid topic to discuss.

I'm not happy with Paul's response, but there really is no good response to smears like this.

Wow, excellent post. And I'll attest that you got your economics right.

I would add that point sinks aren't the only option for iilwy. They can also simply award fewer points for things to reduce the growth in their "money supply," so to speak (aka better central bank policy). But better yet, they could set up a real economy and experiment with several alternatives to central banking, such free banking.

Well, probably a bit off track from their goal, but an econ geek can drool at the possibilities.

And another solution to Match.com's problem is to make the points into true currency, allowing people to accumulate them (and perhaps earn interest), and also allowing people to set the price of points it takes to message them (don't these places hire economists? sheesh).

Secretary was cool. I couldn't stand Crash (aside from the trippy opening credits). They took a subject matter that should've been fascinating on its own (car crash fetish, sheesh!) and somehow made it boring. Then again, maybe I wasn't ready for it.

WTF is Old Skool? The way it's being used, it sounds like people are treating it like some sorta badge of honor (i.e. silly elitism over absolutely nothing of consequence). But whatever.

Me, I already had a Yahoo! ID and had merged it immediately, since I saw no reason not to. I have no dog in the Yahoo! vs. Google thing, since I know folks from both. Neither company is good nor evil. In fact, I think anthropomorphizing corporations is silly and misguided (all you Apple fanatics are freaks).

in print, again with the dying on cygnoir.net
Mine gets misspelled a lot as well. I guess I'm used to it, so I don't get annoyed unless they continue to do it after I correct them.

Plus I get amused when I see a new one. It's been a while, though.

Per Wikipedia, Carell was an unknown at the time he was cast for this film, and the producers opposed the casting until 40 Year Old Virgin became a hit.
