that that some oil from ANWR or offshore may be exported or it wont lower gas prices is a very stupid reason for not drilling there! Take an class in economics. If we export a million barrels from ANWR and import a million barrels from somewhere else, it costs us nothing. If we import a million barrels and export none it costs us 140 million dollars! Research and development of alternative energy sources is great and we should do that, but as long as we are useing more oil than we are producing we need to drill as much as possible. If we end up with more oil than we need we can sell it to China to pay for all our imported lead painted toys!

Democrats say drilling would not help because we wont get the oil for 10 years, a great argument they have been making for a decade - Jay Leno

=== author's response follows ===

Close...but no Caribou.

First, your equation does not take into account the very real costs of environmental impact. One offshore spill is all it would take to destroy a very vital tourist and fishing economy. It has happened in California (off Santa Barbara) and can happen again, in spite of any reassurances from industry to the contrary.

Keep in mind that the new offshore leases would mean drilling in water that is miles deep; and some of the leases are in the hurricane zones.

Second, "we" do not export the oil. Foreign owned firms such as Shell and BP might reasonably be expected to do the exporting, taking all the profits for themselves, and selling to the highest bidder, which might well be China or India.

Finally, classical economic theory hinges on the idea that more resources are always available - which is not true in the scenario of "geopolitical peak oil."

Re: Biden says: Obama will be tested by an international crisis

Joe Biden says the election of Obama may lead to a new conflict, terrorist attack, or a third war. Well, that's not income tax, but a contribution to their retirement plan. So if he wins and implements his tax plan, for the first time in the history of Social Security, 40% of the people who will get retirement benefits will have paid nothing for them. Social Security will then loose all pretext of being a retirement plan, and will become a national welfare program.

This will cause Social Security to lose public support in a massive way. Leave Social Security contributions out of income tax plans. If you take some peoples income taxes to pay others Social Security taxes, Social Security will be destroyed forever.

http://strategicthought-charles77.blogspot.com/...
