Also, if you happen to be in a band, MySpace provides tools for listing upcoming gigs and posting samples of your music online. For small acts, is isn't unususl for them to find gigs this way--instead of dropping off a tape at a bar, you drop off a card with your myspace page listed.

Howdy--I wasn't trying to inspire guilt. The other side of the palm oil debate (well, one of the other sides) is that the people in places like Indonesia should have the right to develop their own local industries and shouldn't have to refrain just so western environmentalists can enjoy talking about biodiversity. Of course, you could then ask whether the local people actually profit, or whether all the benefits go to big corporations. In short, it is complicated, but I'm sure a gallon of palm oil used in home soap making isn't going to be the thing that sets off a global environmental catastrophy.

Paradoxically, removing signs and blurring the line between pedestrians and cars can make traffic run more smoothly and safely. I guess maybe I'm a religious libertarian...

Hi John--the new blog looks great, and it looks like the conversation is off to a great start. I don't consider myself to be a universalist, at least not by the definition you are giving, since I do think that certain flavors of various religions are unethical. In the spirit of keeping things positive, I'll skip naming names. That said, I do tend to interpret the Bible very liberally and often metaphorically. At any rate, I'm looking forward to further conversation!

Well, since I'm not participating in NaNoWriMo this year I'm happy to offer advice. Perhaps a story about an old man and a huge fish? Or, you could write an allegorical tale about one man's adventures in Nashville over the course of a single day. Maybe you should write a novel about someone with a web log, and you could cut and paste whole entries from your own blog into the novel; that would save time. Ok. Perhaps I'm not the best person to be offering writing advice. Good luck, though; I'll look forward to seeing what you end up producing.

greatest invention ever.

I've been running OpenOffice in various versions for the past 3 years or so, and I'm hooked. It is an open-source project, meaning that if you download it and want to edit the actual software to make improvements you are legally able to do so--assuming you have that talent. It also lets you save files in Adobe .pdf format, and that is a nice bonus.

Perhaps you reacted too quickly--I know it sounds like "The Insider" was just looking for a way to tie their celebrity gossip story to the tragedy of the day, but maybe there is another explaination. It could be that Brad and Angelina are missing... they could be among the victims, possibly in a London hospital suffering from amnesia. Or, maybe "The Insider" was trying to implicate Brad and Angelina in the explosions, having heard that they have both bombed at the box office in the past. Just a thought. :)

Apparently I need coffee. Before anyone else notices it I'd like to go on the record as saying that "Web log" is six letters and a space, not seven. Of course "Web blog" would be seven letters, but that would be too circular even for me. Memetic is also seven letters, and is both a contracted form of Mental Emetic and a word of its own that refers to the science of memes (discreet units of thought.)

Since "blog" is a contracted form of "Web log" (seven letters and a space being too much for the collective community to type) maybe there should be a catchy contraction for Michael's site as well. Wopinion? Wrant?

I've been learning it for a while. I have tweaked the standard WordPress stylesheet, and use that for my whole site. You can see it at http://www.nohats.com/weblog/wp-layout.css

I have also had nice luck with Server Side Includes (SSI), and that plus CSS makes updating the site a snap. There are performance issues associated with using SSI on a large site, but for what I do it is fine.
