in An Interesting Trust Experiment Begins on Oracle AppsLab
A follow-on question would be, do users even care?
We've discussed this before, I'm not so sure most people get the whole trust thing. We work in technology therefore it's pretty high on our list...but my parents (yes, they're on Facebook)?
I do try to counsel friends and family about dialing the privacy controls up...
I find it hard to wrap my mind around at times, the vastness of the 'tubes (as you would say), and I ponder this fairly often.
Not really sure if I had a point or not...just not sure if everyone gets the "trust" issue. When you couch it in those terms, I have a hard time getting it.

oracle on oel, yeah, just because i don't know anything about nix environments. one good thing about windows (for me anyway), i can get it up and running in a quick hurry.
so are you going to bail on ATT? jailbreak it? i've seen a lot of frustration with ATT on "the 'tubes" lately.

You should be able to find instructions for Oracle on OEL pretty easily.
Re. ATT, I'm not switching anytime soon, and it's pretty good for what I need. I don't mind Edge too much b/c I don't do a lot of heavy bandwidth stuff. Would be nice to go 3G, but I don't think I'd use it enough to justify the cost.

Peas in a pod?
I just reinstalled Jaunty because it (I?) couldn't find my HDD, you know, the one where all my data is. Now I'm reinstalling everything I had on there. The good? I'm learning to keep as little as possible on my computers. I'm also learning all about VirtualBox. Windows Vista Ultimate is now running in VB. OEL is running there...though I've yet to figure out how to install Oracle (the database) on it. I managed to find a nice step-by-step...and muck that up already.
So what happens on June 17th? New iPhone 3Gs or whatever it's called? If I recall, you're still on the "classic."
I love stories like this though...I still believe you learn more from FAILing that you do from WINning. Might be why I read The Daily WTF? Interesting...

I saw your post about the HDD discovery fail. Hope you got it working. You're having trouble installing Oracle on OEL? That should be cake :) On Ubuntu is another matter. I've seen some tutorials, which I'm sure you found, but never tried it myself.
The iPhone is one thing I'm not eager to upgrade. I guess when it comes to paying for stuff, I prefer to wait and amortize my investment. The OG iPhone works just fine, and I'm nearly done with my ATT contract. Not in a hurry to jump into a new one.
I agree that tinkering makes for better learning, but man, it's frustrating sometimes.

in Best Job in Tech? on Oracle AppsLab
dude, you have the best job in tech.
1. Work for Oracle
2. Your role is to surf the web, find new trends, then turn those into cool products (Mix, Connect).
3. Umm...
(i'll stop with the praise now)
I haven't been in any role but development. I enjoy it. Sales consulting I think would be fun as you get to interact with those that use the product. Support would be good just because you get/have to learn the ins and outs of the product. I've never been in management though...not sure if I would like it but that's probably a good enough reason to try it out someday (it's a challenge right?).
Can I be part all of those?

Thanks, glad you think so. I do a lot of crap besides what you list that isn't very fun :)
I didn't include management as a tech job. Usually managers are promoted from within one of the roles I mention. Been there, done that. Ran. I'm not very good at managing. Let's leave it at that.
Sales, consulting and support all have good aspects, but too much pressure for my liking. You have to close a deal or make a go-live date or fix a critical issue (ahem, wear a pager). Development has pressure too, but at least in my experience, it's not as bad.
You can do parts of all these roles. Join an early stage startup.

You guys are showing what was once "fluff" actually has value...it's just not readily observable (with an actual demo I mean). Doing so in a gigantic corporate environment to boot. Can't wait until Oracle begins to sell (or open source) the products all of you have created.

It's a great presentation, and Hans is a very entertaining presenter. FYI he did another similar TED Talk on HIV in February 2009, also online. Highly recommend it.

Unfortunately, I've never found a data set that fits. Someday.
It's available as part of the Data Visualization APIs I think. Why do you want an OSS version?

You should present that topic and advise the IOUG on their outreach. It's always good to see organizations doin it rite (akshully).
It's all the rage right now, and people want to know what's successful. Too bad you missed the deadline for OOW, although I have a feeling they will do suggest a session again on Mix. We could run a Digg storm on it :)

Not balanced? That's silliness. Oh wait. Nevermind.
Had a discussion with the media rep today (after interviewing Mr. Wagner) and he said they had no idea what to do with me. No one had asked before. Without proper direction (or a cool badge with "media" on it), I can do just about whatever I want. :)
I have tried to honor their gift though by blogging incessantly. I think #C09 is trending...no it isn't. Oh well, I'm trying. You might be careful about that promise (though I'll take one-to-many beers instead)...I'm going to talk to the Oracle PR people tomorrow.
I keep trying to sell the "No" theory too. With an intro and then help from Dan, we may be able to convince the IOUG President to do something similar in the future. We certainly got him thinking about it.
I've had an absolute blast though. At a minimum, I hope that comes across in my musings.

in The Future is Good Enough on Oracle AppsLab
You'd think by now I would know how to ask a fellow IT person a question and not leave it open to debate. :)
I was hoping to get you to share your thoughts on future applications. Not necessarily the next Facebook or Twitter, but what you think/see going on in the world...you know, since you are an expert. ;)
While I'm here though, I might as well talk about the netbook thingy too. We recently purchased another computer. Mine (desktop) was 7 years old and was sorely underpowered for what I needed it to do (run an Oracle database). I didn't really want to (nor could I afford to) drop a lot of money, but for what I needed, I was staring at the 1500 range, minimum. We decided to buy my wife a new laptop, I would take the "old" one (Dell XPS) and call it a day. I did however look at all the netbooks out there and was tempted...but my wife is near blind and she's taken to streaming netflix movies so I went with a cheap 15" Dell Inspiron (I had credit).
I agree about the iPhone. It's good enough for 90% of what I do (twitter, blogging, email and the like). One of these days, I'll sack up and buy one.

I'm not an expert. I just blog :) Thinking about future applications sounds like work, and it's a pretty big subject area. If I have some quiet time, I'll ponder that.
The good enough mantra does feel like the end of days for a heavy O/S that comes with crap I don't need. It's weird to see MSFT squeezed between price points that didn't used to exist. They're conceding the high end (and usability) to OS X, and netbooks/Linux are pushing up from the cheap end.
Can't be good. The Office business unit will carry them for a while though, but not forever.

Twitter, Facebook and Google are out right? What about next gen stuff? Do you have any ideas on what the future will look like (i.e. next month, next 6 months, next year)? Will it be more social media or do you think those mentioned above will continue to rule the world? Will it be more aggregation a la FriendFeed?
I have no idea, but I would love to hear your take on things.

Though I haven't used a Mac (other than wifey's iPhone), I can still appreciate what they have done, particularly in the usability category. (That might come from reading too much 37signals). There's really no arguing with success.
I'm too much of a newbie to debate the differences between operating systems, I think they each have their points. PC (windows) for getting into just about every home which then drives more and more people to look or get curious about other operating systems (Linux, OS/X, etc). Here I go blabbing again...

To your PC in every home point, I think people get caught up with the price tag of a Mac. Most average users in the US will keep a computer at least 5 years. Think about how much extra maintenance comes as you get a fragged disk that probably is part of a bot net.

From what Justin's saying, 11g ported to OS X isn't happening soon.
Yeah, money is an issue with Apple stuff, especially when you pay the early adopter tax. I really like the iMac I bought the wife, but obviously, it's not portable. Still love my OG iPhone and don't plan to upgrade and don't care to either.

They shouldn't be including things like PDF readers because that would put Adobe out of business or something. What about SnagIt? Now they can't sell software to Mac users? WTF? I smell an anti-trust lawsuit brewing!
:)
I haven't had a chance to use a Mac yet. I do know this, they are absolutely gorgeous. I would buy one if I could afford one and if all of the latest Oracle software ran on it (didn't 10gR2 get release for OS/X?).

Now that pdf is an open standard, Adobe can't do anything, but OS X and other software have been manipulating pdfs for years. Prolly had to pay a license fee or something similar before the spec was opened.
Yes, 10g R2 was just released for OS X Intel. Raimonds has an install guide. I run SQL Developer on my Mac. I thought I saw an item pass through OraNA about installing APEX on top of the OS X 10g R2 release. What else do you need?

Yup, 10gR2 is out for OS X Intel. As Jake mentioned, Alex Gorbachev posted a how-to for installing Apex on Mac. SQLDeveloper works. JDeveloper works. As for the rest of it, Virtualbox or VMware+Oracle Enterprise Linux gets you there.

competition isn't just good it's great! (hopefully you just visualized Tony the Tiger).
It dumbed down computers to a lot of people, there is no doubt about it. I'm still "suffering" from it. It did allow those without CS degrees into the game which has brought forth the enormous growth of the entire industry.
I work in the industry and I just began using another OS...that is one great thing about Ubuntu is that they have marketing themselves well and they come pre-installed on Dell (right?). I would buy one in a heartbeat (well, I think I'd rather build one now, but you know what I mean). I've always want to learn/use other OSs, but how do you choose between the 30 billion flavors?
Completely off topic and would probably be more fun with beer involved! I gotta get to PDX.

And yes, Portland's many fine breweries are calling you.
John E. Bredehoft (Empoprises)
FYI, I was recently checking out netbooks at the Dell website, and Ubuntu iand Windows XP are offered. As for me, I haven't been in PDX since 1987-1988 or so.

Actually, Google will probably find it and rank it higher than your personal website of family pictures or your online resume.
The other controls are a bit more difficult to explain.
The problem is that even within a network of people you know, activity can leak out into other parts of Facebook and now, into search engines. Facebook (and other networks) give the illusion of a closed conversation among friends, which encourages sharing personal stuff, e.g. these pictures of us get wasted at the BBQ, status update that I'm on vacation in Maui, etc.
We all know these risks, but average FB users do not.
