in Honolulu Marathon limps to the finish line on billso.com
Sorry to hear that, Bob! I've never encountered problems at other ChampionChip-timed events. Then again, I didn't run those races during a monsoon! I hope the friendly Honolulu Marathon staff can clear this issue up for you soon.

I agree with that article. DR is ugly as sin, but it's got a consistent and fast design.

in Honolulu Advertiser blogs need more content and authority on billso.com
Thanks for the thoughtful comments, Kim! That's some good information regarding your schedule.
While I'd love to blog every hour or so and post a video or two each day, I do have to get some real work done. :)
Seriously, given , I think the writing is on the wall. The Advertiser is profitable, but they're still shedding employees.
Most of the non-local news stories are usually straight from the wire.
The Advertiser may have no choice but to move its local and breaking news coverage to a blog format, similar to the NY Times blogs. It's a good way to post breaking news while staking a claim in the blogosphere.
On a different topic, the Advertiser needs to get better performance out of Plurk. That system is slow as molasses, especially during logins.

in How colorful should a laptop computer be? on billso.com
If they have OSS or Tux stickers, that's bonus points in my book. We see a lot of surfboard and swimwear stickers out here.
I imagine you see more than a few football stickers out there in Houston. Texans or Cowboys? I'm a lifelong Bucs fan, myself.

in The impossible solar iPhone on billso.com
Good question, Aimee. It's not so much the battery size as the solar cells... they'd need to be huge to directly power an iPhone. That last link in my entry to the patio table will give you a good indication of the size required.
Battery technology is improving incrementally. There have been some interesting advances, but these models are still in the labs.
The most promising alternative to batteries is liquid fuel cells, powered by methyl alcohol or butane. It's easy to recharge these cells - people have proposed little vending machines that just squirt new fuel into the device.
In developing countries, people could just distill their own fuel.
The amount of fuel inside one device's fuel cells is not enough to cause a serious explosion or fire.
I'd have to guess that most BlackBerrys have better battery life than the iPhone, simply because the iPhone has a huge screen and WiFi. Turning on WiFi will really hammer the device's battery life.

in Why Honolulu needs rail on billso.com
The anti-rail petition has only 16,000 signatures, according to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin:
[Mayor Mufi] Hannemann acknowledged a group of residents attempting to stop the project. "I respect the democratic process," he said. "But what is their alternative? It's not HOT lanes, toll roads, underwater tunnels or expanded bus routes. They cannot replace rail."
Stop Rail Now, an anti-rail initiative, has collected 16,000 of the nearly 45,000 signatures it needs to propose an ordinance on the November ballot, saying, "Honolulu mass transit shall not include trains or rail."

in New iPhone will be subsidized, faster and thinner on billso.com
There's more confirmation in this Reuters article.
"We think that actually Apple could talk about a very disruptive business model, or a change in their business model, embracing subsidies where necessary, multiple carriers to help get the iPhone into more hands," Lehman Brothers analyst Ben Reitzes told a conference call last week.

Here's an update via Center Networks: recovery may take several days, according to The Planet's CEO, Doug Erwin. He now describes the fire as "an explosion":

@ Daniel Peters:
Dan, thanks for the well-written and thoughtful comment about my rant! I am not in George Carlin's league. His 2003 New Year's Eve show at the Blaisdell is one of my favorite live events ever, and that man can rant.
You've got a great point about Honolulu. We're not alone here. I've seen similar behavior at expensive prep schools and in much larger cities like New York City and Atlanta. There's an entitlement mentality that takes hold in grammar school. By the time some of these students get to college, they cannot fend for themselves.
I have met and taught many undergraduate and graduate students who were able to think and do for themselves in college. I'd like to think that "helicopter entitlement" affects a small minority of workers and students.

I missed this excellent discussion about Verizon and its possible response to Android when i wrote my article. While Verizon is backing a rival mobile Linux spec, I could also see Verizon embracing Android if the company loses ground to the 3G iPhone.

Two quick updates from today's web. ReadWriteWeb has a good article about Android vs the iPhone. Meanwhile at Google's IO conference this week, there were demos and lots of interest in Android-powered phones. Scoble has some links, and these videos are quite interesting.
