The competition between 3rd party commenting services is a great thing. It means that all parties have to work their asses off to innovate, fix bugs, and LISTEN to the community. All three of which you guys are doing a great job of.

It will be important for all of these services to continually find ways to reach new audiences. Gary Vaynerchuck talked about building a personal brand at Web2.0expo in NYC and he said, "don't decide which services to use, use ALL of them". That is exactly the attitude I think you guys need to have. You have email down, I love how easy it is to contribute to a comment thread via email but what about if I want to use Friendfeed or FB or [ other service here ]? And that is just limiting the scope to text responses.

The Seesmic integration early was an awesome innovation. Now what about Jott? If I don't have access to my laptop but want to contribute to a text conversation how do I do it? What if I could vocally call in my comment or response? The web is increasingly MOBILE and increasingly LIVE. Keep those themes in mind and you'll be headed in the right direction.

Keep it up!

Re: SlideFail: Making fun of yourself: Ok. I got top 20 in the comp so I figured, sure maybe it got all the hits.

No reading your post I realize the the tweet I sent out just made me look like a fool! And, like you, I'm not that amused by the whole thing. Pretty fuckin lame actually.

Slideshare really blew this. I think that Yongfook created a great self hosted platform. The developer has stated that he was not trying to create another Wordpress-esk blog platform. Like you said this platform is super customizable which makes it a great technical project not a mainstream platform, exactly what the developer meant to create. I set it up for fun and it was very easy, and I'm happy with the result.
http://ryanagraves.com/sweetcron

Re: Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photowalk

Justin- I love this shot of the school bus. Quite frankly when the apps first came out it was HUGE. Everyone was spending hours a day on Facebook and every newspaper, podcast, and blog was praising Facebook. Even Microsoft bought in at a rate of 15 bil. But, now many of my friends have returned back to their original uses of Facebook, messaging, picture sharing and well, stocking.

Personally I think the apps aspect of Facebook is on its way down. It is to diluted and this maybe one situation where Facebook made the wrong decision to open up their platform completely. Keeping some control may have been the better move here. They do platform well. They've focused on dependability and I think they're finally there. They will leave the Tweet__(insertnamehere)__.com applications figure out which features will be most popular.

However, I agree with FB, where the hell are they, definitely late to the race but they may launch a version that blows these other "cheezy" ones out of the water.

Great post.

Re: 2009/02/05/lastfm-vs-slacker/

Jenn- I totally agree. She was laid off 3-4 months back and starting hitting the social web hard. Picked up her blogging and tweeting, continued to meet for informational interviews and network hard. Then she got a job as the PR department for a high profile wealth manager in San Diego, Ray Lucia.

She's bloggin at http://taylorgraves.wordpress.com and really kicking ass. However, this time it seems as though they've copied Twitter a bit to closely and need to identify their own still before they are done with this iteration.

I completely agree with them moving towards a model that will fill the bank account. This will keep them around and thus continuing to iterate. Always a good thing.

I think you're on the right track here Andy.
