The number of beads in each column is standard for a Chinese abacus, but the number of columns may differ from abacus to abacus. The one I show above has 13 columns, but I have others that have as few as 5. If you are trying to learn how to use the abacus to add and subtract, then hopefully you can follow my instructions above.
