in What Facebook Fan Pages Taught Me About Relationships on Chris Brogan
hey chris
nice post as usual.
ive got 5000 friends as well and i though that mass messaging from a facebook page only showed up in their "notifications" not their actual facebook email. a bit less direct. mass messaging from a group does act like an email though. i could be wrong on this but i thought that was the difference.
cheers

hey mathew
im just not sure why i would buy one. you need to give people a good reason to break their habits and adopt a new format. whats the advantage?

That's a good point, David -- you do need to give people a good reason to adopt a new format, and I'm not sure that the storage size or the fact that you can play it in your phone is a big enough incentive.

I had exactly the same thought. I went through the list looking for something exciting but was amazed how fast I clicked through them. Not very inspiring.

Well put Chris. Niche is an amazing thing that brings like minded people together, but it also allows them to stay their, in the comfort zone and not have to look, listen and experience new ideas. The Long Tail isnt just for marketing and selling. Its relates to ideas as well.

Great post Chris!
One more idea. (I dont think you covered this).
Have a few posts held in reserve. Write whenever something excites you but keep some things back to use in a dry spell or when you are on holiday or just too damn busy with life. This allows you to maintain your frequency (and your readers:)

in Twitter has Pulver-ized me. Time to move to Plurk? on Christopher S. Penn's Awaken Your Superhero
Hey Chris
Ive also reached the 5000 person limit on Facebook. Its interesting that Jeff has opened another page. I actually talked to the Facebook folks about that (I was surprised at how good they are at responding to emails) and they warned me strongly about it being a violation and to use my Facebook Musicians Page instead.
Question:
do any of us really need to follow more than 2000 people on Twitter? Thats a lot of noise:)

i totally agree.
there is such a great opportunity for everyone. we would all win. another song of my songs, 'black black heart' became a favorite of the anime world and there must be a hundred different anime videos cut to that song on youtube. ahh if only there was a buy button! now multiply that by all the youtube videos that use music or picture...

Thats a great way to use Flickr Chris! I've been using it as a way to let my fans upload their own photos to my music blog. All the photos on www.davidusher.com are fan generated. After the show they just upload them to my Flickr group and they automatically appear on the front page. It really helps keep the site fresh and gets my fans involved.

Oh come on, the album's all done -- now you can just kick back and
relax, right? :-)
I saw the stuff about YouTube going longer form; will be interesting
to see whether creative types pick up on it or look to put their
content elsewhere and try to monetize it somehow themselves.

Quite right, apples and oranges. I won't sit through an ad for a youtube clip or a CNN clip but i would for a TV show (that is if HULU was available in Canada:)

David, if you want to try out Hulu, you can use anonymous proxy
software to disguise the fact that you are in Canada. I confess that
I'm not entirely sure of the legality of doing this, but it's pretty
simple: I've used Hotspot Shield from AnchorFree (which is actually a
Wi-Fi VPN solution but acts as a proxy as well) and watched shows on
Hulu without any trouble.

in Reznor: It’s all free — accept it on Mathew's comments
that what i hope to but i really wonder if VC's will have the stomach for it. its pretty hard dealing with artists and the returns in music can be pretty hit and miss.

thanks mathew, i had a really great time at MESH and it was a real bonus to have David Gratton as moderator. as we talked about on the panel, i agree that music is seen as free and as artists are going to have to find their way in that model. i like all the things trent is doing (i love a shit disturber:) but, i also think that its easier for him and radiohead to experiment because of where they are in their careers. they both got famous in the 'traditional' music business. they both have large tech savy fan bases. and, they both get big mass media coverage when they try something fun.
when i think future model, i always try to think about up and coming artists. where the free model falls down a bit is in artist development. for many artists there is a point where they need funding to jump to that next level. to go from hobby to professional. with all the money draining from the music business there is less funding out there to help them make that leap.

I agree, David -- there is a gap there for new and up-and-coming
artists. I'd like to see a return to the days when smaller labels
acted almost like venture capital firms, finding and investing in
promising startups (although of course there are flaws with the VC
model as well).

Hey Chris
It's true, you are "what Google says we are". When i do a search for a business or a person, if they don't appear on that first page of Google, right or wrong i start to question their 'brand authority'. Your legitimacy these days is very tied into your Google rankings. There are only 2 ways onto that first page, buy your way on or through content and linking.

really interesting post robert. what really struck me was how powerful the facebook News Feed is and how engaged the facebook audience with their connections. Like you ive maxed out at 5000 facebook friends and in a world with dwindling attention the ability to get focus without being intrusive is everything.
