Being in the top 100 myself, I am happy with the way the top 100 list works:-) How many of the 100 comments per post you mention have come from Australian bloggers I wonder? That is impossible to quantify automatically. Blogs that attract a lot of non bloggers are likely to attract less comments too.

It is not too hard to artificially boost subscription count and if this were used as a major measure of a blogs popularity I am sure the unethical element of the blogosphere would be doing this more.

As a blogger myself I am aware of subscribing to blogs I like to give some link-love. Prior to this I would be far more likely to read blogs on the net rather than subscribe. I still do read my favorite blogs on the net rather than through feed readers. Subscriber numbers do not necessarily reflect the number of readers.

Saying all this it is unfortunate you are not in the top 100 - I think you deserve it more than I do.

Thanks for this Lee - there are some things here that I am most definitely going to check out.

I am a OneNote and Flock devotee already and agree live writer is good.

I use a free program called MWSnap rather than Snag It and just use Irfanview as a photo viewer - I can open files in Photoshop to edit directly from there too. I tend to keep my images well organized in folders though so do not really need an external program to help.

I am wary of using spam filter programs after too many emails I want to keep being filtered out. How does Spam Arrest go for this?

I was going to ask if anyone knew of sites that had actually increased in rank during the recent changes then discovered that one of my sites, for a non-profit volunteer run Coastwatch organization in UK has gone up 2.

As proof that I do trust your advice I have signed up for The Attention Age Doctrine - even though I do not blog for business reasons you have me intrigued. If I had happened across the site by chance though the format/design of the page and the extravagant claim "Everything you know about Marketing is Wrong" would have turned me away. I would expect to be offered something for free only to find something like "All this for $49.99" on navigating via the sign up link. Either that or when I received the email itself.

I came to this article via your email feed. I have the feeds of the blogs I read regularly delivered by email. Those I do not feel the need to read on every post I subscribe to in a reader.

I do a weekly link post because I think it adds value to the information I am providing for my readers - readers who do not spend the hours that I do researching and reading so that I keep up to date with the world of blogging. It may be speed linking but this post probably takes me longer than most others.

I may add a bit of a summary but I see little point in going into too much detail, effectively rehashing what I have read elsewhere unless I can bring a new perspective to the subject. I would rather spend my time creating unique content or presenting a different aspect of a topic.

I know the links are not too good for pagerank purposes but it is my readers who matter.

I think it is the quality of the reading material you are linking to that matters, in relation to how much value these posts add to your blog.

Wikipedia caters for all subject areas, all sorts of levels of input - from academic to first hand experience as in your example - it appeals to a huge and varied audience.

It was unique and had no competition when it started off (as far as I am aware) - it had a head start and was able to amass a massive amount of information to become an authoritative first point of reference.

I am following the progress of Wikea search with interest - to see if it can garner enough user input to make it successful.

It is difficult to get kids to understand that they can't eat things they really enjoy although care has to be taken not to scare them with stories too. I remember clearly being afraid that I was going to shrink away to nothing and disappear after being read a story about the "girl who would not eat her soup" My parents' way of trying to get me to eat more when I was 4 and I was eating little because of missing my sister who had married and moved away from home.

Just a thought - did ET use a particular phone company when calling home ? It would have been a good advertising opportunity for a telco if not.

Isn't the new light system in the Doncaster carpark fantastic! I was surprised at how many free spots there were during the day last week and assumed it was partly because of the increased number of spaces there.

Judging by the huge number of cars in the carpark at K Mart Burwood at midnight last night maybe people are looking for cheaper options this year?

What if you use Alert Thingy, Twhirl, Digsby and gtalk all at the same time because you cannot decide which is best. I think I am a lost case.

I have now settled on Digsby I think - the alerts were taking over my screen :-)

I agree with Jeff about being able to see what my friends, who I have interests in common with, are digging.

It also makes sense, if you do want to social network, to use a site that combine features rather than using different sites.

It seems that too many people are complaining about it without giving it a chance and if you are not interested in the social networking features then don't use them.

I think the the theme very well designed given the constraints the designer was under - to create a page of ads that could also accommodate a blog. The ads, given their multitude of colors, are at least tidily placed and less offensive to the eye than other sites with similar aims.

I actually like the look of it - when only the footer area and bottom posts are visible.

I answered these questions, apart from breaking the income down, a while ago. My goal is to earn extra income so that I can afford to go back to England with my partner and son to visit my family and to do some longed for traveling around Europe.

I am following your progress closely as you make me feel that this is a real possibility. Deciding on a blog topic is the one thing I have found very difficult to do though. I have even bought domain names but have not done anything with them because of doubts about the popularity of the topic.

Mike,
Unless you can find a reliable Joomla extension to create search engine friendly urls and are willing to spend time learning Joomla's interface, I would suggest you stick with Wordpress. It is simpler to set up and manage and has a high level of support if you have any questions or problems.

Be prepared and willing to:
- Put time and effort into your project.
- Be consistent and regular in your updates.
- Continue learning as you go along - research, read and respond.
- Be aware of what is working and the preferences of your readers.
- Keep trying. Do not be disheartened if the success you wish for does not come as quickly as you would like.
- To widen your reach outside of your blog to bring people to your blog.
- Give and receive support from other bloggers.

If most Wordpress users started using a dot.blog TLD you may not be keen to stick with a dot com. I can foresee this all becoming messy as people jump on the bandwagon and choose names only to find that others in their niche have opted for a different one, which leaves them out of searches for that particular name. Domain name sellers will be happy though - they will be singing all the way to their dot banks.

I am not sure this particular patriotic government employee is convincing enough to get me off the couch, although your post did prompt me to check out the Australia Day Site. My attention was drawn to the 'The Great Australia Day Duck Race' on the Yarra. I don't want to battle the crowds in the city though and will probably miss this pleasure go to something more local.

I did read up about Blogrush and was reasonably interested until I saw the widget. After culling my sidebar of all but the MyBlogLog images and relegating bumpzee and others to links, I was not about to add any more slow loading elements, especially a blog roll. I tend to join everything to see what it is like but I think I have had about enough of this kind of thing. I do not have the time to give them all the attention they need to make them worthwhile.

My most used and useful has to be the Web Developer Toolbar. Especially useful for styling xml Blogger templates, as you cannot just download the template file and view it in the browser.

Great advice as always but having to be careful about the amount of plugins is something I will find hard to do. I have progressed from being a Blogger widget junkie to Wordpress plugin junkie - I can't resist trying things out.

One good thing is that the majority of Wordpress plugins are easily installed and if anything does need tweaking there are plenty of resources out there to help.

I could not get Ajax comments to work either but have not spent time looking into it.

I spent a fair time researching plugins and have a list of those I use on a dedicated page on my blog (also created by using a plugin). Thought it may be of use to people.

I am trying to work out how to put a comment box on a page now as my page template does include one - either that or it is somehow turned off.

My comments are up a little and spam is way up - I have found the akismet and Bad Behaviour plugins very accurate though so the spam is not a problem.

I suspect my comments are up because of joining the Aussie Bloggers Forum however - because most new commentators are members there. I now know why participating in forums is valuable for gaining readers!

With the proliferation of online social networking applications and the extra work this can create for bloggers I was wondering what differences you have seen over time with regards to blogging and whether you see this as good or bad. When I first started blogging publicly MyBlogLog was just starting up and after that came an explosion of Web 2.0 type resources for bloggers - I have not known anything else.

Have you noticed a difference in the number of comments, do you think blogging will become less popular because of Twitter etc .....?

I sympathize with you losing your drafts - I have spent the last week trying to retrieve the deleted contents of a whole disk drive after a reformat and Windows reinstall first wiped my C drive and then my backup drive.

After an enforced break from blogging because of a PC reformat that went badly wrong I too have been out of the loop lately. I think you have enough timeless blogging information in this blog to provide content for a book.

Although you cannot produce all totally original information if it is to be a general kind of book on blogging your own personal perspective, honest analysis and writing style will make it different to anything written before. Speaking your mind, relating your own experiences and giving your own views will add to its originality.

Stupicide - I love it. I will try and remember to use it sometime (and give you credit for it of course. It does sum up nicely what comments like this do to the reputation of a blogger. To be successful you need to develop respect and trust in your readers. Disagreement is fine if you have a valid point and phrase it in a way that does not offend - constructive criticism and not "suicism"!

Have not forgotten that post - been saying this for months I know - life has been busy.

I too have been loath to monetize my blog. Even though any money would come in very useful, I am sceptical of making a decent enough income from ads to make it worthwhile.

I recently caved in and added a local ad networks banner to my sidebar but find it very intrusive and so far no ads have been forthcoming. What swayed me towards this one is the blogging communities they have created in other countries. Seems I need a good reason to add ads.

Then again they do not bother me on other blogs as long as the blogs do not just exist for money making purposes and have decent posts.
