Wasn't it something like "prematurely anti-fascist"?

I wish I could think up a similarly clever euphemism for my "affliction" since, like you, I have been passionate about all things Spanish for most of my adult life, long before the present craze, reaching back to the early 1990s, when I studied Spanish in Madrid, and, also like you, it is impossible or me to separate out a wine from its logical and beautifully compatible companions: food, people, and place.

As I have written elsewhere, it is clear to me that fawning praise for Spanish wines in the American critical wine press has been a great boon for Spain, even if the context of its appraisal is devoid of those things we both cherish and you so eloquently enumerate:

"Wine is alive! Wine is people. Wine is culture. Wine is amusing. Wine is for wooing. I’ve never reached the bottom of a 100 pt wine and felt differently unless I shared it with my wife or friend."

So it is incumbent upon us to devise not a rival but a complementary critical strategy that takes all of these things into account, especially food, to focus particularly a wine's pairability over its supposed ageability.

Maybe I was prematurely anti-uncontextually monocritical.

Re: peekvid: free movies, tv shows, and cartoons

Here are some more websites that offer Free TV:

http://www.tevootv.com - Watch tv online here

http://www.xmusicvideos.com - Free online music videos

http://www.flickpeek.com - Watch all your favourite tv shows, movies, anime and cartoons.

Re: Fix the Past, Save the Present

You like arguments don't you? :P

Re: OhGizmo! » Archive » Renegade – The Ultimate Gaming Chair

actualy they are 180 at sams

Re: High Gas Prices Force People to Alter Lifestyles

Lock in your Gas Prices this Summer This website allows you to purchase gas at a set price. Check it out, www.yesterdaysgas.com.<br>
I bought all my gas for the summer at $3.58, so when the prices go up it's not going to affect me as much (besides higher food prices etc)

Re: Behind Fox Attacks

I am from Germany, but I spend the last school year in California. What I found is that American news (not only Fox) are only focussed on the sensation and the entertainment of it, not the education. When you watch "__World__ News" on ABC, you get stories of Florida families who renovate their homes. Sadly enough, most viewers are more interested in such "news" than actual political journalism.
Well, now I'm back in Germany and enjoy the Tagesschau, that's some serious news.

Re: The Miri Trip That Will Never Be

haha.. welcome to kch..
err miri to kch is like 1 hr flight..

like perlis to johor like tat.

stay for the rainforest music festival!!!

Re: http://www.lagrandt.com/2009/06/fichas-del-domingo-fecha-12-gran-dt.html

hola pepe, che como es eso de la pelota oficial? como te la ganás?

Re: Kuching

kuching kicks butt.. and i'm not telling u,, i'm in kch

Re: Kuching

haha.. tat i'm in kuching!!!

Re: Kuching

coco: sure :D hahaha.. wonder how weird it will turn out to be

Re: Take Me To Australia

I agree.. pods are very heavenly :D

Re: Men Are Pigs!!!

Hahaha...I like the 'beating' emoticons at the end of your message.....they are just so cute!

BTW, I will say that men have basic instincts....however these instincts must be practiced on the right person at the right time and place la....

Respects must come first before a man could ever win a girl's heart...=)

Re: Men Are Pigs!!!

Hahaha...I like the 'beating' emoticons at the end of your message.....they are just so cute! Since there are no moving parts and it is a hard drive after all (requires gentle handling) the unit should last well. Build quality of the remote is perhaps better than average - feels quite solid with nice button feel.

* If placing an unformatted HD in the mg 25 - upon plugging it in to the computer via usb the HD is detected and one can easily format in win XP, as explained in this review. (I was woried the HD would need preformatting in a lappy or something)

* I could not get the connector pins of the mg 25 to completely insert into the 2.5" HD connector. I got them about half in. Thus the screw holes for the HD do not line up with the screw holes in the mg -25. Still, the connection is sufficient and i used some cardboard to hold the HD firmly in place.

* Works terrific as a portable HD, power is via usb and no drivers or reboot required, just plug in and you're off.

* Out of around 10 .avi files i tested yesterday only 1 didn't work. Good enough for me.

* At one stage I couldn't get an image to display on my TV, turns out the composite plug required twisting around in the mg 25. No biggie but again evidence of cheap build quality

* the ability to display .jpeg images is a bonus, quite handy - show the family your photos by just plugging it into the TV.

Overall, very impressed, would recommend.

Re: Porridge

The problem with porridge is that if you don't clean the stuff you make it with immediately, it sets like concrete and is impossible to clean.

I throw some dried fruit or low fat jam in, instead of sugar. Thought I should have asked over at your place. I will check that out. I completely agree with your point on response. I think we're making a mistake in trying to pre-determine interpretation. We're lucky if we can incite behaviour. I think we ought to focus more on the meaning we build into our interactions rather than obsessing over what people take away as that will always be unique to each person.

Re: The importance of form.

Wikipedia is a great example of form versus content. Essentially, the best interactions are things that people can do with the brand AND with each other. If you can create an interaction of this kind, your chances of success go up greatly.

In terms of planning for unforseen interactions, I don't know that's possible. I think that the best way to plan interactions is to think about what people are trying to do. What's needed are common "rules" of engagement. I believe that these are included when an API is published. Terms of use or that sort of thing.

David,

It's definitely happening, but not on the fly. These partnerships that you mention take lots of in person negotiation, lawyers and that sort of thing. Essentially this would be a system like Facebook's API. Anyone, even people who Facebook had never spoken to can create applications to interface with Facebook. Simply saying we could use a similar concept with brand partnerships.

Re: The real digital divide is a human values one not a technological one.

Hi Chandrachoodan,

I think you're right that it's not so clear as I've made it. That could be said of anything really - more often than not we deal with shades of grey not black and white. However, I was also very conscious when writing this that it shouldn't be construed simply as technology usage versus non usage. I believe there is a difference between using technology and embracing it. I don't think that you can embrace it without being an optimist, but I think you can use it without committing.

I think the real flaw is not what you've pointed to but the fact that this is a circular construct. Optimists will tend towards embracing technology and so on, therefore it may be that technology helps to reinforce qualities that are already there.

Re: Services thinking: a services framework

Good idea (and good tip on Girlfriend's Kitchen). Of course they communicate but that isn't their primary role.

I also think forcing interactions through a filter of communications strategy is a mistake. Communications strategy is all about focusing down to a very small set of "messages." Interaction strategy is about enabling people to do complex things in a simple way. They have quite different goals that aren't really interchangeable.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interaction_design

Re: The best advertising ideas?

Yes I think agencies should definitely try to come up with those ideas but I think they need to approach them first in terms of the benefit to the business and then second in terms of what they communicate. I think that one of the problems is that agencies come up with briefs for messages and then start thinking from there. Clients think about profitability, margins, growth and start thinking from there.

We are trying to do this and have found success often comes from revitalising or re-thinking an existing client process or service rather than bringing a completely new idea.

Existing processes or services have already gone through approval processes and have built support systems within the client's organisation. Working on these tends to put you on the same side as the client rather than on the side of trying to introduce something new, foreign and potentially disruptive into their company.

But I'm not saying it can't be done, just saying tread carefully.

Re: Relationships, stories and context.

@greatdaines I think storytelling is a way to communicate your context but it's often far more engaging if people are allowed to construct their own contexts in the ways they choose.

@andy thanks

Re: Exploding the brand model.

George! great to hear from you!

How's island life?

Re: Prediction: Apple’s next wave of growth will be driven by services.

Interesting, the subscription plan makes more sense.

In terms of a one-time fee, didn't Tivo take a bath on lifetime subscription as a one time fee? It gets directly to the fact that it is the users who create their own stories on the web. The best experiences (and I'd include Amazon in this) allow the user to create his own story and doesn't foist someone's predetermined story on him.

I think where we diverge is around your definition of marketing. I believe that the role of marketing is to add value to companies (in fact this is also what the AMA says). Communicating meaning is one way to add value but there are more direct ways such as simply delivering more value.

I don't think that Amazon communicates more meaning than Ask, but it definitely delivers more value (although it's hard to compare them as they have different purposes).

Re: The myth of storytelling in new marketing.

Ross, I agree with you - Brands aren't the sorts of things most people want to tell stories around. It says, "find a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life." I know many designers, who are less than passionate about design. My advice to them would be to pursue a different career. If you can't get excited about your job, find something that you can get excited about every day. I have had many design jobs that were less than ideal, but it was my passion for design that made me stick with it. True passion will be accompanied by determination. Sometimes it takes determination to find a job that you can be passionate about. Perhaps determination, and not passion is what is really missing from many professionals today. Fivemcclungs, I enjoyed your thoughts. Good luck.

Re: Intelligent? Why is it that a Christian designer like yourself can look at this subject objectively, but a pro-evolution designer can't talk about it without spinning the issue? We've had 60 impassioned comments in the past week from perhaps 40 readers. There is a huge, and inaccurate, assumption of the part of many folks that comment that they represent the average reader of this site. Comments are welcome. But there is arrogance in the assumption by a few who comment that you, as a reader who comments, represent the primary audience for this site, or any other site. 99% of our readers do not comment.

But to answer your question, Why do I read B L A N K? I don't know if I am a typical reader, but I can speak for the people who subscribe to your feed. I usually read your posts in my RSS reader (Safari). I really have to have something to say to make the extra click to leave my RSS page and enter your site (or any blog for that matter). RSS subscriptions are a different audience. You have already "won" the reader if they have taken the time to subscribe to your feed. You really only have 2 goals with these readers: First, keep your readers interested enough so they don't unsubscribe, and if you are lucky, intrigue them enough to jump over to your site and comment. So far your writing has been interesting enough that I haven't unsubscribed.

"What interests you about the perspectives offered on B L A N K?"

I think it is interesting that you are unapologetic about your Christianity but never confuse design and religion. I cringe when I read niphal.com because their headline is "Christian Graphic Design." In other words, I don't really want to hear you talk about Christian issues, but it is nice to know where you are coming from. I hope that helps...

Re: Design Not Known

There are definitely some downsides to blogging, but I don't think self promotion is one of them. Designers making a name for themselves among their peers isn't anything new, and I don't think it is inherently unhealthy.

"Design is all about others, not us."

Agreed, but you are never going to design anything if you don't make a good effort to promote yourself.

It is easy to let the popularity of a blog go to your head, though. It is also weird to be known for talking about design instead of the actual design work you do. Overall, though, I think blogging does more good than bad for designers and I wouldn't discourage anyone from taking advantage of the powerful tool of blogs.

Re: Design Not Known

"I sometimes overstate my case to make a point."

I thought I was the only one who does that! It doesn't have to be that way, though. The church has the same access to the internet as everyone else. I would point the finger more at the Church rather than giving them a pass along with all the other "old institutions." I mean the news institutions are suffering too(newspapers, network news), but there is still news that is thriving in the new environment (blogs, cable news, talk radio). The thing about the church's position is that the old institution is dying without being replaced by a new Christian model. That is the really scary thing as I see it, the Renaissance is leaving it irrelevant and powerless. Sorry for the pessimism. I guess there are probably many examples of good use of the web by the church, but nothing revolutionary - like a Flickr, or anything.

Re: The Second Renaissance

Frank, I do have ideas, maybe not a vision exactly. If I were to take those ideas to my pastor, I think I would be laughed at, or at least politely turned down. I just don't know if there is desire by the Church to move out of their comfort zone. They would rather pat themselves on the back for the work they supported back in the Renaissance than try something new. Innovation is scary and the Church (especially the denomination I belong to) is extremely afraid of change. There I go being pessimistic again...

Re: Red pill or blue pill?

Whoa! I think good designers recognize this but it is an extremely hard concept to sell. For example when I design a business card my strategy is to have one side be a teaser. The less information the better. If this card is on the ground you want it to be a mystery that causes someone to pick it up and see what is on the other side. If you get the whole story in a glance there is no reason to give it a second look. A business card is an interactive piece at the most basic level. This rarely flies with a client because they don't want a business card; they want a brochure with their name on it. That is just the example that came to mind when I read your post.

Re: The Inevitable Blog Explosion Post

I, also, found you via BlogExposion. I said to myself, "This is not a blog but a journal, a piece of writing, a mirror, a window to one's soul, and a remedy for a broken heart" (from my diary Feb 23, 1008)

I never thought of becoming a great blogger, but i always imagine myself becoming a great writer.

I always felt this euphoric feeling, coming out of my room, plunging into my daily life with a thought that i started a new thing: a blog. In changed me in many ways, and blogging help me a lot in breaking my WRITER's BLOCK, which plague me for two years. I have always kept a diary, but i felt it wasn't enough to cure the blockage.

A great blogger is not necessarily a great writer. One has a quality different from the other. I find it surprising to find bloggers such as bryanboy (byanboy.com) and scott (thesartorialist.blogspot.com) earning a lot of money without putting much effort in their writing.

i came with the understanding after a year of immersion into the blogosphere that the a great blogger should have the following characteristics:

1) a Persona: this is the projected character of the author, it manifest through his writing style. if bryanboy is known for his tongue-and-cheek and funny character on his blog, he may turn out to be a different person when one meets him in person. Great writers should be masters in depicting this persona.

2) CONSISTENT with his own niche. niche blogging is growing nowadays. It works effectively for me to focus on one theme: CINEMA. If one starts a personal blog, he probably has to invoke a consistent persona.

3.) Purpose should be factored in when it comes to becoming a successful blogger.

being a successful blogger should not be limited to only the three characteristics that i mentioned. successful money makers online may or may not be good writers but they certainly have to be good SE Optimizers...

Re: A Film Critic's Take on Successful Blogging

@kathleenmaher

i was wondering, what do you exactly mean by 'being clued in'?

i think what you are trying to say is that being referred to or being cited by other blogs. it's a big factor to successful blogging. Not only featured to other blogs but also featured to other media such as television, print, and advertisements. Good publicity, that is.

I thank Jan for doing that! haha!

Re: A Film Critic's Take on Successful Blogging

i just want to correct the following ideas that i wrote on my post... sorry for a blundering take on postmodernism. It slipped in to my mind. Sorry!

I wrote: "...postmodern society where intertexuality (a principle which denies the existence of grand absolute universal truths)..." i never quite said it right mainly because i committed a categorical mistake. When one uses the term "postmodern society", it prompts a discussion on sociological aspects of postmodernism. To identify 'postmodern society' in terms of a philosophical concept of 'intertextuality' is like colliding philosophy with sociology, two different categories, which results to an erroneous reasoning.

It should be this: ...'postmodern society' where media is the primary driving force for reshaping social experience and subjectivity.

hehe! sorry! Don't put them on anything other than a simple on-off switch either.

Putting a CFL on any type of electronic control (timer, dimmer, etc) may be a FIRE HAZARD:

http://sound.westhost.com/articles/incandescent.htm

Another observation at that site is that the poor power factor of CFLs means that some of the power savings is illusory. You don't pay for it but the electric company needs to generate more power to compensate.

If you want to install fluorescent lighting what you really should do is replace the fixture with one that uses plug in bulbs.

Re: Are Cell Phone Towers Honey Bees' Next Big Threat?
