The more we can pull this out of silos and make (as you point out) the instigator the aggregator, the more we'll step towards making us the url.

Nutshell: The reason we go online is to connect with other humans. The reason we share our metadata is to make that process easier. Our metadata asserts who we are. The more widely it is shared the more we can connect with others who share our immediate purpose.

Re: The Power Of Google Juice

If it ain't already been said, the url is an irrelevance - the links are way more important. To move is to disrupt the network of trust you've created and that's a hugely complex web. Not much fun trying to restore all the connections either. I started with a blogspot address precisely because I figured google would look favourably on its own. Now I dare not change it - and clearly not because anyone types the address into the browser.
See you next week at http://widgetwebexpo.com
best dc

Re: You Can't Regulate Just One Industry And Leave The Other Alone

It's almost as if no one had ever coined the phrase 'the because effect'...

If I was in a band I might even consider sueing the record labels for this extraordinary intervention in social-graph driven marketing.

expanded on this here: http://fasterfuture.blogspot.com/2008/07/shound...

Re: The Death Trap

Fred, you're right. we're always talking about the death of this or the death of that. Mark's helping me on that right now :-)
Tell you more tomorrow in person .

Re: Stop grouping and griping - start thinking and doing

dan. I think it's the adhoc nature of group forming network theory that is being revealed here. The way we can express our-right-now purpose is improving so we are more able to flit from group to group as our purposes change. We amplify that which we value and dampen out that which we don't. That's complex adaptive systems for you!
Communities aren't for life. Some may not even be for Christmas.
A merry one to you, btw. :-)

Re: Why it’s dangerous to compare print figures to website stats

what the print figures never grasp are huge great lumpy valuable things such as: conversations generated, relationships fostered, content created, groups formed, action enabled and er... value created

Take a look at the content on the guardian's site, for example. For each item of 'printed' news, there may be 10 items of UGC created.

If you only calculate value in readership terms you're missing 90% of the value.

Re: The end of an era…

welcome to the rest of the world dan :-) There's an awful lot of it

Re: The best webcam-based augmented reality application?

That's neat. I think you are right about music being just one example of the disintermediation the network brings.
Any form of media is defacto the middle layer, the mediator, and it has to understand it must find a new place to operate.
One question I think helps define the issue for us is :"What do you do when you don't own the user experience?"
I have some views on where that positions the mediators, more of which you'll find for example here:
http://fasterfuture.blogspot.com/2008/04/who-ow...

Re: 2008/04/25/rss-easy-button/

aren't widgets the 'easy' button for rss? Funny thing about blog posts is that the conversation is a networked one. For example, I have some thoughts on this (around documents being always in beta) which I posted here.
http://fasterfuture.blogspot.com/2008/05/unfinished-symphonies.html
So I link out and if a reader of your blog chooses to follow that link they may comment here or there. And each comment may take the conversation branching off in multiple other directions (the risk and the value of friendfeed for example).

Anyone else want to branch off from this node?
Thanks, as ever, for your kind words!

Re: Overdue Shout-outs: Case Western, David Cushman, Ivan Pope, Useology

Michael, thank you so much for those kind words. They mean a great deal and remind me that it's about time I added your blog to my list of recommended ones - which is what I'm off to do right now.
Would be absolutely honoured to work at the next desk. It's why I add a widget to show latest comments at the top of my blog. Madness that I have to make an intervention to emphasise the conversation in a blog though, isn't it?

Same thinking could and should be applied to video and its emerging microblogging models (seesmic, qik et al).

One way for designers to approach it might be:
How do I illustrate putting the conversation at the heart of this?

Re: Watching Twitter Become the World’s First Ubiquitous Computing Brand

Mike, you've inspired me to write my own take on the Mumbai/Twitter events. It gets very confused when you throw in the irrationality of real human behaviour - our liklihood simply to copy the monkey next to us.
I touched on some of this on a post I wrote for Stowe's /message.
