in The best webcam-based augmented reality application? on TheWayoftheWeb
That's neat. Yes augmented reality all the rage. With apps that can run thru the cam facing you on your mobile, then I think we go beyond 'that's neat'.. Like you say Dan - ubiquity.

in Why it’s dangerous to compare print figures to website stats on TheWayoftheWeb
what the print figures never grasp are huge great lumpy valuable things such as: conversations generated, relationships fostered, content created, groups formed, action enabled and er... value created

Take a look at the content on the guardian's site, for example. For each item of 'printed' news, there may be 10 items of UGC created.

If you only calculate value in readership terms you're missing 90% of the value.

in Ford tries the ultimate social media experiment on The Inquisitr
The ultimate social media experiment would change the products and the company - not simply seek to use people as a channel to sell what you've already decided they want.
Here's hoping Ford did the former too...

Dude you link to my 'usual discussions' of what influence is as if context isn't included in my thinking. Mark and I share much common ground. Maybe take a look at a little more of my work?

in Corporate communications has radically changed on We Are Social
Trust me. Big companies ARE getting it. The lack of corporate accounts doesn't tell even half the story. Big companies ARE getting it because they are all made up of human, social, beings. Node by node, group by group. It's up to us to enable and support them.

in Stop grouping and griping - start thinking and doing on TheWayoftheWeb
dan. I think it's the adhoc nature of group forming network theory that is being revealed here. The way we can express our-right-now purpose is improving so we are more able to flit from group to group as our purposes change. We amplify that which we value and dampen out that which we don't. That's complex adaptive systems for you!
Communities aren't for life. Some may not even be for Christmas.
A merry one to you, btw. :-)

in Why belief matters… on TheWayoftheWeb
I like to think of purpose as the Why of an organisation. We do the what (strategy) and the how (tactics) all the time. What we rarely push for is the Why. Why do we want to make a difference? why does what we do matter? As Mark puts it "Why" (are we getting out of bed in the morning).
That's what's behind the What, How, Why slides I shared for Brando-Digital. Mark's helping me on that right now :-)
Tell you more tomorrow in person .

in ‘The Supermarket effect’, and how to minimise it… on TheWayoftheWeb
Nice Dan. As we always said, user-friendly is as user-friendly was. Ebay is a great example of that. People learn how to use something and one thing people really hate (though its really good for them) is unlearning.

My solution is the landroverowner route. Get the most active people on the site to be part of the development team.

If they are onside they'll have a very persuasive effect on the rest of your community. We are more influenced by other people than by anything else - after all.

in Change Is The Enemy Of The Competant on Jonathan MacDonald.com
Since growler was generous enough to share his thoughts I ought to repay I suppose. Growler the internal workshops were the tip of an iceberg. I never aim to lead horses to water. Instead I provide quality water that horses who choose to can drink at. Those attending got a great deal from them and took that with them into the business i have that in writing from many people ! The rest of the iceberg was included in my publicly available job description which I always fulfilled without complaint from any of my emap or bauer bosses- right to the top.

struck me as insanely large numbers too Fred. Even if you added affiliate deals or even paid reviews (let's hope not!) the gap feels a huge one to fill.
I took part in the survey. Wonder if there was some over estimation on the part of bloggers?
Would love to meet one who is making that kind of cash from affiliate deals and ads alone.
