Robert - what company/script were you running? I hope they are donating their work to the GraphSync project?
http://www.graphsync.com
I hope you will join us to lobby for DataPortability.org
Think of it as OpenSocial - except no one owns it and it's more than just widgets.

in APML consumers? on Life is grand
Hi Paul,
Engagd.com lets you rank your RSS feeds by APML.
Particls lets you get notifications based on your APML.
But you are right - we need more - want to do one? :)

Brad you are describing what we call DataPortability which results in Portable Social Networks or what I call Personal Social Networks.
You can check out the beginning of the movement here: www.dataportability.org.
Drop me a line if you like and I can explain all the companies involved and the technologies being developed behind the scenes.
Cheers,
Chris

Yep, while the details of some stuff needs to be sorted out, the only real barrier now is widespread adoption, which is coming ;)

Mark - looks like you described one of the use cases of APML - as the profile on which the personalization algorithms would work :)

I agree Jason - APML does not need to be more complex that converting your Del.icio.us bookmarks (which are already public) to a portable list of interests.
It is up to the user which tools they use, which APML they export and who they give it to.
The only goal here is to standardize the format so the user has the choice.
I convert my Jaiku lifestream to APML for example - all that stuff is *already* public and manually selected by me.

in How not to promote RSS on Life is grand
Certainly - there comes a time when these technologies mature and need to "cross the chasm". At that point the TLAs need to give way to simple value propositions.
In Ian's case, however, he is in the Early Adopter category and would like a tool that pushes the limits using all the raw technologies at his disposal.
For the mainstream there is Live Bookmarks :)

Paul, the value of all these TLAs is not the technology, but the value they represent for the user.
Even 37Signals use HTML, CSS, AJAX, Microformats, RSS, JPGs and PNGs - doesn't mean the user needs to know about it.
The trick is for product vendors to leverage all the technology to create human experiences. That's all that matters in the end.
